Valparaíso reencontrado es una invitación a volver a mirar la ciudad, es un reencuentro con imágenes que fueron registradas durante el siglo XiX y comienzos del siglo XX, las que ahora son enfrentadas a una mirada contemporánea −en los inicios del siglo XXi−, este contraste permite observar cómo ha transcurrido su devenir, cómo cambian o se repiten los acontecimientos de la vida en la ciudad; aquí se reencuentran las visiones, las escenas cotidianas o los hechos extraordinarios, que van otorgando y construyendo aspectos propios que le conducen al ser de una ciudad original.

Este ‘reencuentro’ es también un homenaje a los pintores y viajeros que registraron visual o textualmente las impresiones que les produjo llegar a valparaíso, y que con ello contribuyen, desde la lejanía del tiempo, a dar cuenta de una identidad que hoy se hereda patrimonialmente y que corresponde poner en valor para las nuevas generaciones.

Este libro se inspira en muchas publicaciones que han ido entregando testimonios de la ciudad y que han sido editadas por esta Editorial, desde la carpeta de láminas Valparaíso I de Allan Browne, las Crónicas del viejo Valparaíso de Enrique le dantec, el Memorial de Valparaíso de Alfonso Calderón, y otros títulos que han permitido ir construyendo una gran mirada a través del tiempo, que posibilita este ensayo visual. También a través del tiempo, se han registrado fotográficamente los lugares y los acontecimientos de la vida actual de la ciudad, que ahora se presentan para evidenciar los rasgos, contrastar los hechos y los lugares que validaron a valparaíso para ser declarada ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Valparaíso Revisited is an invitation to set eyes again on the city. it is a reunion with images recorded during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which are now −at the beginning of the 21st century− face to face to a contemporaneous point of view; this contrast allows us observe its becoming, how the events of life in the city change or take place again; here, the visions, the usual activities or extraordinary events, which progressively grant and build typical aspects that lead to the being of an original city, come together.

This 'revisit' is also a homage to painters and travelers who visually or textually recorded their impressions when arriving in valparaíso; this is their contribution, at a distance in time, in accounting for an identity which today is inherited as patrimony and which must be highlighted for future generations.

This book is inspired by many publications that have rendered testimony of the city and that have been edited by this publishing house, from the book Allan Browne's Valparaíso I, Enrique le dantec's Crónicas del viejo Valparaíso, Alfonso Calderón's Memorial de Valparaíso, and other titles which have allowed that a great vision through time, which enables this visual essay, be built. Also, through time, places and events of today's life have been recorded photographically, which are now presented to evidence the characteristics, compare the events and places that validated valparaíso to be declared a World Heritage City.

El pequeño poblado que fue el núcleo inicial de la actual ciudad, fue desarrollándose al pie de las quebradas que daban a la caleta de Quintil, cuyo surgidero o zona más abrigada daba hacia la playa de la que más tarde fue Plaza Municipal y ahora es la Plaza Echaurren.

El descubrimiento

El capitán español don Juan de saavedra, al mando de la nave Santiaguillo, descubre a principios de septiembre de 1536, la caleta llamada ‘Quintil’ habitada por pescadores changos. Recordándole a su tierra natal, bautiza este hermoso valle junto al mar, lleno de árboles y arroyos, con el nombre de valparaíso.

The discovery

spanish Captain Mr. Juan de saavedra, at the command of the vessel Santiaguillo, discovered ‘Quintil’ Cove, at the beginning of september 1536, which was inhabited by Chango fishermen. Reminding him of his homeland, he named this beautiful valley along the sea, full of trees and creeks, valparaíso.

La palma chilena

Especie cuyo nombre científico es Jubaea

chilensis, pertenece a la familia de las palmáceas, es la palma más austral del mundo y es endémica

(nativa)denuestropaís.Puedellegar a medir hasta veinticinco metros. Entre sus características está su lento crecimiento y su capacidad de resistir el fuego debido a componentes de su corteza, crece principalmente en las laderas de exposición norte de los cerros áridos. la palma chilena se caracteriza también por ser la más longeva del mundo, su edad puede llegar a superar fácilmente los mil años, siendo frecuente encontrar en los palmares, ejemplares con más de 700 años.

The Chilean Palm Tree

This species, scientific name of which is Jubaea chilensis, belongs to the Palmaceae family, is the southernmost palm tree in the world, and is endemic(native)ofourcountry. it may be up to twenty-five meters tall. Among its characteristics are its slow growth, its capacity to resist fire due to the components of its bark, it grows mainly on the hillsides facing north. The Chilean Palm is also characterized for being the most long-lived of the world; it may easily live over a thousand years; thus, it is frequent to find palm groves, with individuals over seven hundred years.

...Apenas anclamos, saludamos la fortaleza con siete cañonazos y ella nos contestó con uno. los buques se colocan tan cerca de tierra que tienen tres anclas en seco amarradas en rocas o en ‘cabos muertos’. Generalmente no se fondea más que en un rincón de la rada que está delante de la fortaleza para comodidad del comercio y seguridad para los buques. …As soon as we anchored, we saluted the fortress with seven cannon shots and they replied with one. Anchorage is so close to the land that vessels have three anchors on the surface tied around rocks or dead weight anchors. Generally, anchorage is only performed in one area of the roadstead that is in front of the fortress so that trade can be carried out easier and for the safety of the vessels. However, after all, this roadstead is not useful at all during winter time because the north winds, that go in without resistance, turn the sea so rough that many times ships have been seen to be blown to the shore.

El anfiteatro

valparaíso se caracteriza por ser una ciudad que desde los cerros mira hacia el mar, formando un inmenso anfiteatro que tiene como escenario el océano.

El mar presenta una gran luminosidad y un profundo color que tiene su origen en el gran abismo cercano al borde costero. los nombres de los cerros que rodean la bahía, surgieron a medida que estos se iban ocupando, hasta llegar a más de 40 en la actualidad.

los cerros de valparaíso presentan características urbanas y sociales diferentes unos de otros, son unidades reconocibles que conforman identidades particulares.

The Amphitheater

valparaíso is a city in which the hills face the sea, forming an enormous amphitheatre, stage of which is the ocean.

due to the great abyss near the shoreline, the sea is very bright and with a very deep color. The hills surrounding the bay were named as they were inhabited. Currently, there are more than forty.

The hills of valparaíso have urban and social characteristics that differ one from another; they are recognizable units that form particular identities.
