Some verbs only accompany verbs in their gerund form. Gerund verbs with the
..ing ending.

1. Some of the verbs that accompany gerunds are:
• I avoid eating fish
• Maria enjoys shopping
• They quit working
• Felipe kept jogging
• I avoid to eat fish. (incorrect)
• Maria enjoys to shop. (incorrect)
• They quit to work. (incorrect)
• Felipe kept to jog. (incorrect)
Gerunds end in –ing and are used in the following ways:
Subject + 1st verb + gerund + complement
2. The verb “go” is commonly followed by a gerund especially when
referring to recreational activities.
Go bowling go dancing go jogging go sailing
Go camping go swimming go fishing go shopping
I go shopping on the weekends
I went hiking las month
I go fishing every year
Mario goes jogging every Tuesday.
We go dancing with our friends every Satuday.
I like to go swimming with my friends.
3. When placing a verb after a preposition, the verb must be a gerund.

Julio is tired of working overtime.
Carmen left without saying goodbye.

4. Gerund can be used as subjects.
Smoking is bad for your health.

5. As complements (after be)
His favorite hobby is listening to music.
When I was a little girl, one of my favorite past time was climbing trees.
Notice that is a difference between a verb in its progressive function and gerund
form.
