MOST Repeater Ring Extender (Mini Hub) and Loss-Free Optical Splitter

1 Introduction For other language versions please visit this web site: http://www.smsc-ais.com/most_repeater_docs

Eine deutsche Version dieser Anleitung finden Sie unter: http://www.smsc-ais.com/most_repeater_docs

When examining MOST Network environments, connecting to the network without changing the network’s structure is an important requirement. The MOST Repeater is a versatile device that helps to cope with many of the tasks that arise during the development cycle of a MOST System. According to the major application field of MOST, the MOST Repeater is compliant to the requirements of an automotive environment, with respect to voltage and temperature ranges. Applications for the MOST Repeater cover tasks from simple data recovery, up to flexibly extending a MOST Network with any MOST Device, plus allowing an OptoLyzer4MOST Interface Box (Monitoring Control Message traffic) to be attached loss-free to an extra output at the same time. The MOST Repeater‘s electronic circuitry provides Data Recovery for the MOST bus signal without changing the number of active nodes in the ring. Its inputs OECs (Optic-Electric Converters) and outputs EOCs (Electric-Optic Converters) are compliant to the MOST Physical Layer specification, including the 3dB attenuation of optical power (for Ring Extension side only). An extra “activity output” helps to trigger e.g. external measurement equipment in case of the occurrence of light at either one of both optical inputs. So tracing system startups is no problem. “Activity output” can be used to power an external device completely, if the current stays below the maximum current as specified in chapter 5 on page 15. The basic applications for the MOST Repeater are:

• Replacement of an existing (defective) device in a MOST ring

• Single and duplex data recovery in a MOST ring for very long transmission lines

• MOST Network Extension (Simple1 -> 2 -HUB function)

• Active Splitter (Always available, due to an additional HP type EOC)

The Active Splitter function provides the capability to connect an OptoLyzer4MOST Interface Box in SPY mode (Control Message monitoring) to the main ring, without the need of any adapters or passive splitters. The power supply follows the automotive requirements (filtering, load dump protection, etcetera). If there is no activity on the bus, the MOST Repeater falls into sleep mode. Therefore, no additional cables are required except UBATT (Battery Power) and GND.

2.3 Status LEDs Note: If the MOST Repeater is powered on (plugged in) no LED is illuminated yet.

• Activity

LED lights up, if light is detected at the input of the Main Ring (Rx) or at the input of the Ring Extension (Rx).

• Lock Main LED lights up, if a correct MOST signal is detected at the input of the Main Ring (Rx).

• Lock Extension LED lights up, if a correct MOST signal is detected at the input of the Ring Extension (Rx).

3 Application Examples

3.1 Network Extension

Figure 3-1: Duplex Data Recovery Application

The MOST Repeater can be inserted into an optical wire harness interface (e.g. in the center area of the car) in order to refresh MOST data in both directions. For monitoring, the additional Monitor Output is available for HP connectors.

3.2 Single Data Recovery and Two Active Splitter Outputs

Figure 3-2: Single Data Recovery and Two Active Splitters Application

The single data recovery is useful, if a defective device needs to be removed from the MOST Network. The MOST Repeater fills the gap until a new (or repaired) device becomes available. In addition, two optical outputs are available for monitoring (one is based on a HP EOC).

3.3 Device Replacement

Figure 3-3: MOST Ring Extender/ Mini Hub Application

As long as no valid MOST data is received on the Ring Extension side, the MOST Repeater works in the same way as shown in section 3.2 above. Whenever MOST data is received on the Ring Extension side (LOCK is stable for 200 ms min.), the changeover switch will extend the ring. This means, the device connected to the Ring Extension side will be part of the main ring. In case an unlock situation is detected at the Ring Extension side, the extended ring will be excluded again, while the main ring will continue operation. This feature smoothes insertion of external devices, by filtering most of the unlock pulses. The reason for the unlock at the Ring Extension side does not matter. In case a device in the extended branch of the network generates unlocks, this will also lead to a separation of the two sides.

3.4 Application with a MOST Datalogger The MOST Repeater enables connecting and disconnecting of a MOST Datalogger without disturbing a MOST Network. The MOST Repeater is integrated into the main ring. The connection to the MOST Datalogger is made between the MOST Repeater’s connector “ring extension” and the MOST Datalogger’s “OptoLyzer” connector.

The MOST Repeater has an activity output that provides the ability to activate the MOST Datalogger when an optical signal is received.

4 Block Diagram As shown in Figure 4-1 (below), Ring Extension side and Main Ring side are equal with respect to the extension functionality (Repeater function). Nevertheless, there are two differences: 1. The Monitor Out function (HP EOC based) is available for the Main Ring side only. This Output is

useable for debugging purposes, e.g. for connecting OptoLyzer4MOST Interface Boxes in Spy mode.

2. 3dB attenuation, is applicable for the Ring Extension side only.

*) The Activity output is not available for the 12 V automotive connector version
