RELAÇÕES ECOLÓGICAS SOLO-CANCER
NO RIO GRANDE DO SUL (BRASIL)

padrão geográfico no Rio Grande do Sul.
SOIL-CANCER ECOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS
IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL (BRAZIL)

SUMMARY
The study of mortality by neoplasic pathologies through a
6 years period (1970-1975), show a sharp geographic pattern in
Rio Grande do Sul State (Southern Brazil).
The northwestern area, coincident with old "steady state"
soils (generally Oxisols), exhibits the lowest cancer
mortalities and, the southern area of the State, with young, in
instable and metastable evolution (Mollisols, Inceptisols and
Entisols), has the highest mortality of such pathology. The
differences among the mortality rates from the two areas is, in
some cases, 22 times different.
The statistical correlation study upon the analitical data from the soils and the average mortality rates in the respective soils, reinforce the possibility of the later association, because Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, Ki, Kr and Al2O3/Fe203ratio, have a significant negative correlation with cancer mortality, and Na+ and Bases Saturation Percentage correlate positively.
Probably, this association and the former proposed by other authors, represent not necessarily a direct associationwith some cancerigenic or anti-cancerigenic agents existing in the soil, but, an association with the environment as a whole, with which the soil is an indicator in dynamic equilibrium.
