INJUSTICE OF JUSTICE | WHY

INJUSTICE OF JUSTICE

TIHAR JAIL, TIHAR VILLAGE

WHY?

Tihar Jail is India’s most high security facility and the largest prison complex in the world comprising 10 prisons. With the steady increase

in crime, the population of the prison complex is currently around

13000 prisoners, more than double the sanctioned capacity.

Thinking about the injustice meted out in the name of justice, we realised

that the family of a prison inmate are innocent victims as the

‘breadwinner’ is incarcerated.

We located the families of inmates, paid their house rent, put the

children in school, provided dry rations and offered training to the wives

so that they could be independent. When we visited the inmates with the

news that their families were cared for, they were at first suspicious, but

over a period of months, they asked to be taught a trade so that they

could lead honest lives once they were released.

INJUSTICE OF JUSTICE | WHY

Around 77% of the prison population earned an annual income of less

than Rs. 50,000 at the time of their arrest, the majority facing charges

under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Approximately 43% of the prisoners

are illiterate, and a mere 7% graduates. The prison administration with

the support of NGO’s is taking every possible step to increase the literacy rate of the prisoners.

75% of the prison population are ‘under trials’, awaiting trial, sometimes imprisoned for several years due to delays in the

justice delivery system.

We work to uplift the living conditions of the families of inmates, and to

transform the lives of inmates to empower them to lead self-sustained,

independent lives. 4
