    PLAN-UM QUICK START GUIDE

    Installing the Plan-Um CD

    Insert the CD into your CD drive and follow the instructions on the

    screen.

    System Requirements

    Operating system: Windows 2000, Windows XPMac OS X

    Linux

    Available Disk Space: 5Mbytes

    Memory: 52 Mbytes minimum

    In addition to Test-Ums Validator product line, the following Test-Umproducts perform standard cable tests and are recommended for cable

    testing: TestierTM (TP350), LanRoamerPROTM (TP600), LanscaperTM

    (NT700), and Resi-TesterTM (TP300).

    Introduction

    The Plan-Um software on this CD allows you to draw residential and commercial

    room layouts, illustrate cable runs, and automatically create a Cable Test

    Schedule that can be uploaded to the Validator for testing. You can also createa simple topological drawing of your network. Test results are saved and can be

    downloaded and printed for the customer and archived to support future add,

    move, and change activity.

    Getting Started

    . Double click the Plan-Um icon on your desktop. The Welcome Screen

    appears highlighting key features of the software. Click the Close button

    to begin.

    2. A menu bar (File, Edit, View, Image, Help) appears at the top of the

    panel.

    3. The icon toolbar provides shortcuts to create a new le, open an existing

    le, save to your hard drive or other media, cut, copy, paste, zoom or

    shrink the oor plan view, refresh, import a background image, and verify

    the software version installed.

    Follow these basic steps to use Plan-Um

    . Click on the Job Information menu tab, and enter Tester and Site

    information.

    2. The Network View menu tab, allows you to create a simple topological

    view of your physical network by selecting network icons from a list and

    drawing connections to simulate the physical layout of your network.

    o Click on a networkicon on the left toolbar. When it pops intothe upper left corner of the canvas, drag it to the position where

    you want to place it. Multiple clicks will create multiple icons

    numbered in the order of your clicks. Repeat this process until

    all Network icons are placed on your layout.

    o To customize the icon name that displays on the canvas, click

    on the New Device Name dialog box on the left toolbar and type

    the name you wish to specify, then click the icon you wish to add.

    The custom name will appear on the canvas under the icon.

    Note: Text entered in the New Device Name dialog box will automatically

    be associated with every icon placed on the canvas until you delete

    the text from the dialog box.

    o To insert Notes regarding network devices, select an icon

    displayed on the canvas and click on the Notes dialog box on the

    left toolbar. Type information regarding this device, such as the

    designated function, MAC address, date of install, or user.

    You can also place text with information regarding the network

    anywhere on the Network View canvas. Click Add Text on the left

    toolbar. When the Properties dialog box pops up, enter the text,

    select the font size, and click ok to place the text on the canvas.

    Click and hold the left mouse button to move the text anywhere on

    the screen.

    Once the Network Port icons have been added, click the

    Connections button at the bottom of the left toolbar to draw

    connections between each piece of equipment. Click Add

    Connections to simulate the physical layout of your network.

    Note: To create angled connections by adding vertices, or inection points, thatallow you to go around equipment displayed in the Network View, right click

    on a connection at a point where you would like to bend the line. Holding

    the left mouse button, drag the line into a bent position and release.

    3. Click on the Floor Plan tab to draw a simple room layout and place the

    ports and cables to be installed. Each cable you dene is recorded in the

    Cable Test Schedule.

    From the list of Residential or Commercial rooms, click the roomname and resize it by placing the cursor over a wall line.

    Identify the ports and cables in each room by clicking and

    dragging them to the locations where you want to place them.

    Click the Cable Type to Add eld to select an available Cable

    Type or dene a custom cable type.

    Note: The room layout is optional. If you prefer, you can enter a cable

    list directly using the Cable Test Schedule tab.

    . Click the Cable Test Schedule tab to see the list of dened cables,

    including the Cable IDs, port termination IDs, Type, Test Jack, Use,

    Length, and Test Results of each cable. The Length and Results elds

    are lled in during the actual cable test on the Validator. Once the test

    results have been downloaded from the Validator, double-click on theResults eld to view the Detailed Test Results for the cable.

    To create a Cable Test Schedule manually, click the Add Cable

    button and then change the cable type as necessary using the

    Type drop down box on the new line. The cable type in the last

    row of the schedule will be used as the default for the next cable

    added.

    To dene a Custom Cable ID, click the Dene Cables button, and

    select the Type and Use from the drop down menus, and enter

    From and To information, then click the Custom Cable ID button

    to create a template for the desired Cable ID sequence.

    5. Click File on the menu bar and select Save As Job to save your Plan-

    Um job to the My Documents>My Plan-Um Jobs folder, as you would any

    other Windows le.

    A complete set of Plan-Um 2..0 Software Instructions are included on

    your CD, and are also available for download from Test-Ums web site

    at www.test-um.com.
