Public without Rhetoric brings together 12 public building projects created by Portuguese architects, whose construction was completed between 2007 and 2017, a decade ravaged by the severe financial and economic crisis. The chosen works highlight the Portuguese architects marked generalist nature and cross-generational excellence, in an affirmation of architecture as a celebration of the experience of public space.

POROSIS invites an intense look at the work of the new figure in the Porto School of Architecture, after Eduardo Souto Moura and Álvaro Siza. The singularity of Nuno Brandão Costa’s work lies in his sustai-ned attention to the primary elements of construction and its plasticity. Through new materials and techniques, his work has built upon the cla-rity of traditional Portuguese architecture..André Cepeda travelled for some months photographing the work of Nuno Brandão Costa. More a sensitive approach than a literal docu-ment, this book is a powerful testimony of Portuguese architecture nowadays, through the surprising work of this architect. The images, by one of the most highly regarded Portuguese photographers, brilliantly challenge the limits of an architectural monograph.

Nuno Brandão Costa (b. 1970, Porto, Portugal), architect. He graduated from the School of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) in 1994, interned with Herzog & de Meuron in Basel (1992-1993) and soon afterwards opened his own office in Porto. Secil Prize (2008), was nominated for the BSI – Swiss Architectural Award (2012) and Mies Van der Rohe Award (2008). He has participated in the Venice (2004), São Paulo (2005) and Chicago (2017) Architecture Biennials. Curator of the 2018 Venice Biennial with “Public without Rhetoric” exhibition. Professor in FAUP, lectured at the ETSA Na-varra; Estudio Barozzi, EPFL Lausanne, FAPyD-UNR and Harvard Graduate School of Design, Cambridge, USA.

The first great work in Europe by one of the most acclaimed contempo-rary architects, the Brazilian Paulo Mendes de Rocha, Golden Lion by the Venice Biennale 2016 and the Pritzker Prize in 2006. It is in Lisbon, in one of the best known and symbolic areas of the city, the district of Belém, that the National Coach Museum is located. Built on the fa-mous site where the Portuguese set sail to travel overseas, the Museum promises to stimulate thought on the relationship between the great city and its buildings, Europe and America, and the very idea of being modern.

Paulo Mendes da Rocha (b. 1928), architect. Considered one of the most talen-ted contemporary architects, Paulo Mendes da Rocha is a major name in the Paulista School, alongside Vilanova Artigas (1915–1985). His work is an endless search for mo-dernity, to “untie the schizophrenic knot in the division between architecture and city, art and technique, art and science”.
