ABSENCES The State of Illinois requires that students attend at least 300 minutes in order to be considered

a “full day” of attendance. Regular school attendance is important because it contributes to high

achievement and academic success. It also contributes to the characteristics of responsible

student citizenship.

Parents/Guardians need to call the school before 7:30 a.m. on the day of the absence. The school

phone number is (773) 534-1465 for pre-kinder to third grade and (773)534-1620 for fourth to

eighth grade.

An absence note written by the parent/guardian needs to be on file. The note should have:

student name, date(s) of absence(s), and reason for the absence(s) and given to the homeroom

teacher. Parents will receive a phone call from the school office on the day of the absence for

confirmation.

Upon returning to school from being absent, it is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher

for any missing assignments, complete and return them the next school day.

8

ACCIDENT or ILLNESS In the event of an accident, illness or injury, students are to immediately notify a staff member.

Students will receive a pass to the main office or Nurse’s Station. Parents will be notified of the

situation. If a student requires immediate medical attention, the school will call 911 and the

student will be transported to the nearest hospital. If a parent is not reached, a staff member

will accompany the student until the parent arrives.

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL Students may arrive at school up to 15 minutes before the start of the school day and are to

report to the assigned areas. All students are to be in class by 8:00 a.m. Students have to enter

through the main entrance and receive a tardy slip when they arrive late to school. Once arriving

at school, students must remain on school grounds and in the building until dismissal.

BANNED ITEMS Students are not permitted to have banned items on school premises. Banned items make the school

environment unsafe for the students and others. If a student possesses any banned items, teachers and

staff must notify security and the Principal or Assistant Principal immediately. If a student is caught with

banned items he/she will be subjected to future random searches.

● Weapons, dangerous instruments, explosives and fireworks

● Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco/cigarettes/Vaping

● Permanent markers, spray paint and other materials associated with the application of

graffiti

● Jackets, sweaters, T-shirts, or any other article of clothing that signifies affiliation with any

organization other than those sanctioned by the school or that shows vulgar, obscene,

demeaning, or suggestive language or pictures

BOOK BAGS AND BACKPACKS (6th to 8th Grade) Book bags, backpacks and personal items are to remain in the students’ lockers throughout the

school day. The students are expected to carry individual books and materials to their classrooms.

BUILDING SECURITY The school building opens to students at 7:45 a.m. Students must be in their classes and ready

to begin their day at 8:00 a.m. If a teacher schedules a meeting or tutoring before and/or after

school with a student, the student should have a pass. A student should not enter the building

before 7:45 a.m. without a pass.

9

All visitors, including parents, must obtain a pass in the main office.

CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY Students will be held responsible for the proper care of all books, technology (i.e. Chromebooks), supplies, accessories or equipment furnished to them by the school. Students who deface, damage or lose school property shall be required to pay for the damage or loss.

CELLULAR PHONES Students are not permitted to use cell phones in school. Staff in the south building are to follow

procedures set forth by the culture and climate team during the last year. Homeroom teachers

are to collect phones and return them at the end of the day.

Students that come in late after 8:15 must turn their phone into the office. The phone can be

retrieved from the 1st floor hallway after dismissal.

Any staff member who sees a student with a cell phone should immediately confiscate the phone

in a respectful manner and turn the phone into the office.

Please note that the school and Cárdenas staff are not responsible or liable for any lost,

damaged, or stolen phones and phone accessories.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS/TELEPHONE NUMBER Please notify your student’s school immediately if you have a change of mailing address, email

address or telephone number.

CLASSROOM PARTIES (Birthday Parties PK-5th) Any birthday celebration must be discussed in advance between the teacher and the parent. We would

like parents to bring healthy snacks if possible.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURE Safe dismissal procedures will be established at the building sites. If a student is not picked up

15 minutes after the end of the school day and the parent cannot be contacted, the police

department may be called.

EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES Please note: The school does not support early dismissals.

10

The parent/guardian is to come to the office and sign the student out. Identification will be asked

of the individual signing the student out. Students will only be released to an adult whose name

appears on the emergency contact form. For safety reasons, a student may not sign

himself/herself out of the building.

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION The Emergency Contact Information form must be completed and updated in September and

January. The school should be able to contact parents in case of an emergency. Students are to

notify their homeroom teacher of changes in address, phone number, or emergency contacts. It

is the parent’s responsibility to notify the office of any changes in address, telephone number, or

other relevant information.

Current information is vital in the event of an emergency.

EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS Students are expected to be in school every day, on-time, in uniform, and ready to learn.

Students are expected to behave with the utmost respect for all and everything around

them.

Students are expected to learn and excel in their classes.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES We offer a wide variety of sports teams and activities. At Cárdenas, our first priority is a

commitment to academics. Extracurricular activities are an integral part of the total growth of

the student. Part of the extracurricular activity is learning to balance the time required to meet

the expectations of coursework with other activities. To be able to participate in such activities,

students must maintain acceptable grade point average, reflecting grades of “C” or above in ALL

classes and have good conduct. Written parental permission is required for participation in each

extracurricular activity.

FEES Parents/Guardians are to pay $30 per student at the beginning of the year. The monies collected

will be used to purchase school supplies for all students and to pay for bus transportation to field

trips. Students who do not pay the supply fee will be charged for all field trips.

11

FIELD TRIPS Field trips offer students an opportunity to connect real-situations with what they are learning in

class. Parents are notified of all filed trips as to the cost, location, time, method of transportation,

etc. A permission signed by the parent is necessary for student participation on field trips.

Parents need to complete a volunteer application online at https://cpsparentu.org if they want

to take part in the field trips as chaperones. The volunteer application needs to be completed

yearly. Chaperones will be rotated throughout the year.

FOOD Food items are not allowed anywhere other than the cafeteria. Food is not to be eaten during

recess time. It is the student’s responsibility to place all trash in its proper container and maintain

a clean school environment. Students are allowed to bring a bagged lunch.

Students are allowed to bring bottled water to drink throughout the day.

FREE MEALS PROGRAM Breakfast and lunch is available to every student. Breakfast is in the classroom at 8:00 a.m. All

students need a meal program application on file.

GRADING STANDARDS 90-100% A is given to the student who is substantially exceeding the standard in

the subject area. The student must demonstrate superior mastery of the

subject and produce work well above the average. (Excellent)

80-89% B is given to the student who exceeds the standard in the subject area.

(Above Average)

70-79% C is given to the student who is meeting the standard in the subject area.

(Average)

60-69% D is given to the student who unsatisfactorily meets the standard in the

subject area. (Below Average)

59% -50% F is given to the student who fails to meet the standard in the subject

area. (Failing)

12

HALL PASSES (South Building) To ensure a safe learning environment, students who need to travel outside the classroom should

have permission from the teacher as well as the appropriate hall pass. Failure to comply with the

school expectations may result in disciplinary action.

HOMEWORK Homework can feel like a heavy burden to students. At the end of the long day of effort. But

doing well at school will actually bring them pleasure. Their most important step is believing that

they can do well, with practice. They need to hear that message from you, again and again.

The following are daily time allocations for student homework.

Kindergarten 15 minutes

Grades 1-3 30 minutes

Grades 4-5 45 minutes

Grades 6-8 60 minutes

LOCKERS South Building students on the 2nd and 3rd floor will be issued a locker. Each student is responsible

to keep his or her locker clean and in order. Students are to keep all books, personal belongings,

and outerwear (coats, jackets, sweatshirts, caps) store in their lockers. The lockers are not

locked. Students are encouraged not to leave materials of value in any locker.

The school and Cardenas staff will not be responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged books,

or personal belongings.

LOST AND FOUND Articles of value or money should not be brought to school. Found money, keys, glasses,

valuables, and other items are to be turned into school’s Main Office. Items not claimed within

two weeks will be donated to charity. Please write your name on your books and personal items

so that they will be easy to identify and return.

MEDICATION Students who need to take prescription medication during school hours must have the required

forms on file completed and signed by a doctor and parent. Medication must be in its original

container with the student’s name on it. Medication will be stored in a designated location and

will only be administered to students if the proper form is on file. Students may carry their

13

asthma inhalers in school after the appropriate paperwork is on file. Otherwise, the parent will

have to come to school to administer medication to his or her child. If you have any questions

please come to the office.

In the case of temporary illness requiring antibiotic or other short-term medications, we strongly

suggest that parents adjust the medication schedule so as to administer the medication at home.

The school will not be able to dispense medication if a student is suffering from a

cold/flu/headache. The parent/family member will need to come to the school and give the

medication to the student.

Information regarding any chronic illness (asthma, diabetes, etc.) should be reported to the

student’s teacher and school nurse.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent-teacher conferences are held in November and April. Parents are required to attend a conference with their child’s teacher(s) during parent-teacher conferences. Additional individual conferences may be held to communicate information about a child’s progress and behavior. These conferences can be initiated by either the parent or the teacher. Parents who wish to schedule a conference with their child’s teacher should contact the teacher

to schedule an appointment.

RECESS Students will be provided with 20 minutes of recess on a daily basis. Student behavioral

expectations are the same. Any violation of the Student Code of Conduct (SCC) will result in

consequences that are determined according to the Chicago Public Schools SCC.

REPORT CARDS, FAILURE NOTICES, PROGRESS REPORTS An official report card is provided to each student four times each year. Parents are required to

pick-up their child’s report card at the end of the first and third marking periods at the scheduled

parent-teacher conferences. There is an opportunity to chat briefly with the teacher(s) and the

parents may schedule a detailed conference for a later date if desired.

Progress reports with failure notice are also sent home to the parents during the mid-quarter,

four times per year. Parents are suggested to view student grades on a weekly basis on the CPS

Parent Portal at cps.edu/parentportal.

14

SAFETY DRILLS Practice drills are regularly held for fire and other emergencies. For their own safety and well-

being, students must take these drills seriously. Silence is mandatory in the event that special

directions be given.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS/INCLEMENT WEATHER When school is closed due to inclement weather or emergency situations, an official

announcement will be issued through the news media. Please check the news on TV and radio.

Information is also available at the CPS phone line, 773-553-1000.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT The Student Code of Conduct (SCC) is designed to ensure equitable discipline throughout the

school system and promote desirable student conduct and behavior. Gang related activities,

drugs, theft, vandalism, or other serious misconduct or criminal behavior will cause police

involvement. Both the student and the parent are to sign the Student Code of Conduct Receipt

form (found at the back of the SCC book) and return it to the homeroom teacher.

TARDINESS A student arriving late to school after 15 minutes without proper authorization is considered tardy. A student arriving late to school must report to the office for a tardy pass. Students who are frequently tardy, either at the beginning of the day or to classes during the day, may be subject to disciplinary measures. If students arrive tardy they are to leave their cell phones with the office staff.

TECHNOLOGY USAGE Please refer to the CPS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for the rules governing such usage. Any

improper usage, as defined in the AUP, will result in the termination of the violator’s account.

Such user will be prohibited from using any computer-related equipment on the school premises.

All parents and students will be required to review the policy on student acceptable use of the

Chicago Public School Network. The CPS policy form on the acceptable use of the Network will

need to be read by both parent and student. Parents are responsible for any damages.

15

TRUANCY According to the School Code of Conduct of the State of Illinois, the only excused reasons for the

absence are: illness, observance of a religious holidays, and documented family emergencies. Any

other absence is unexcused and students will be considered truant from school.

of the school. Each student’s appearance should reflect a positive image of the school and

contribute to a distraction-free learning environment.
