El Barroco del Nuevo Mundo y la ficción latinoamericana contemporánea

En este seminario discutiremos las estructuras expresivas y estéticas del Barroco y Neobarroco, y

rastrearemos su evolución en la literatura latinoamericana moderna. Consideraremos, como es de esperar,

tanto las artes visuales como las literarias. Dedicaremos las tres primeras sesiones del curso a los siglos

XVII y XVIII y trazaremos las exuberantes formas expresivas del Barroco desde sus comienzos en Roma,

pasando por su expansión a la Europa de la Contrarreforma (especialmente en España), hasta su

implantación en el Nuevo Mundo español. Incluiremos la ideología de la Contrarreforma católica, la

ciencia nueva y revolucionaria de la época (que resultó en nuevas formas de entender el espacio y la

identidad) y prestaremos especial atención a ciertos temas barrocos recurrentes: la vida como sueño, el

mundo de los laberintos, la naturaleza estratificada y reflexiva de la conciencia, el surgimiento de la ciencia

y el escepticismo modernos, etc.

Una vez establecido el pensamiento común en el Barroco histórico, el seminario se dedicará a

obras de la literatura latinoamericana moderna y contemporánea en términos de dichas temáticas y estéticas

barrocas. Es en este contexto que utilizaremos el término “Neobarroco”, además del de “Barroco del Nuevo

Mundo”, para describir los productos híbridos que resultaron de los siglos de convergencia cultural

(indígena, europea, africana y asiática) en los países de América. Utilizaremos las recientes teorías del

Barroco del Nuevo Mundo particularmente relevantes para nuestra lectura de la literatura contemporánea

latinoamericana.

THE NEW WORLD BAROQUE and CONTEMPORARY LATIN AMERICAN FICTION

In this seminar we will discuss Baroque aesthetics and expressive structures, and trace their evolution

in modern Latin American literature. We will, of course, contemplate the visual arts as well as the literary

arts. We will spend the first three sessions of the course discussing the seventeenth and eighteenth

centuries. We will trace the exuberant expressive forms of the Baroque from their beginnings in Rome and

their expansion through Counter Reformation Europe (especially Spain), to their implantation in the

Spanish New World. We will consider the ideology of the Catholic Counter Reformation, the

revolutionary new science of the time, which created a new sense of space and the self, paying close

attention to certain recurring Baroque themes: life as dream, the labyrinthine world, the layered, self-

reflexive nature of consciousness, science and the rise of modern skepticism, etc.

Having established a shared sense of the historical Baroque, the seminar will then move to modern and

contemporary works of Latin American literature that may be understood in terms of Baroque aesthetics

and thematics. We will address the term “Neobaroque” in this context, and also the term “New World

Baroque” as it describes the hybrid products that are the result of centuries of cultural convergences

(indigenous, European, African, Asian) in the Americas. Recent theories of the New World Baroque will

be particularly useful to our reading of contemporary Latin American literature.
