La Valle del Paraiso
In the kingdom of Mier, there is a legend. The Valle del Muerte, the Valley of Death, was
once known as the Valle del Paraiso, the Valley of Paradise-the most prosperous, wealthy, and
populated area of the kingdom. The slow, dreary Crimson River, as red as blood, was once the
bold and mighty Rio Diamante-the Diamond River. Where proud geese once flew in perfect
formation, vultures now circle eternally, their harsh cries echoing across the plains. The
destruction of all of the beauty, the pain of all the broken families was all caused by the greed of
two men and a long and bloody war.
King Montgomery reigned over Mier. The land was peaceful and prosperous. King
Monty, as he preferred to be called, had built his kingdom over the course of 30 years, starting
with only a few hundred miles of land. Over time, the kingdom grew until it was a great empire,
spanning almost an entire continent. King Monty reigned fairly over his people, and they lovedhim for his long and just reign. However, King Monty could not rule forever. He had two sons,
twins, named Clayton and Stephan. They had been rivals since they were able to talk. Clayton
was born just a few minutes before Stephan, but Stephan was not one to let ten minutes hinder
him from becoming a king. Every opportunity that he had, he competed with his brother. No
matter how trivial the competition, whether it was swimming, riding, or holding ones breath the
longest, Stephan had to win. As the twins aged, the rivalry became increasingly more violent.
Several times, when they were practicing their swordsmanship, Stephan had come very close to
killing Clayton. Even now, King Monty heard rumors of a devious plot to assassinate Prince
Clayton, to allow Stephan to have the throne. Facing this troubling dilemma, King Monty made
the best decision that he could think of. While on his deathbed, he summoned his sons and
divided the kingdom in half. Each son was given half of the kingdom, Prince Clayton the east,
and Prince Stephan the west. The king made sure that the resources on each side were fairly
distributed. The boundary line was the Montaas Firmes-the Adamant Mountains, with the jewel
of the kingdom, the Valle del Paraiso with its shining Rio Diamonte, in the middle. In doing this,
King Monty had shownwisdom. Both sons would be kings on equal standing, with no need to
war against each other. Sadly, he misjudged Stephan.
Even though both kingdoms were equally wealthy, King Stephan desired more. To him,
satisfaction would only come when all of Mier was under his control. To accomplish this he
began to marshal his mighty horde, an army of 50,000 troops, to march on his brotherskingdom. When King Clayton heard of his brothers treachery, he too began to marshal his
forces; this time, he would end the competition with his brother once and for all!
Both armies converged on the Valle del Paraiso, each army 50,000 strong, ready to do
battle. Before the battle started, however, couriers were sent into the cities in the Valle del
Paraiso, telling them to evacuate their homes before the battle started. Unfortunately, the people
of the valley were stubborn and, while some heeded the warnings of the armies, many did not.

And so, after a few days, the armies clashed in a cataclysm of fury. The war raged on for months,
with neither army gaining nor losing ground. When the ranks of both armies had thinned out
considerably, the two kings simply sent for more troops. Finally after a year of battle, each army
planned one last attack. By this time the Valle del Paraiso, had almost been reduced to ash, but
the valley could still have been saved.
Thenthe last battle of La Sangre se Levant la Guerra-the War of the Blood Rose-began.
Each king had mustered all of his troops. Now, 100,000 soldiers stood on each side of the
valley. Each kingdom had almost been emptied of men. The ferocity of the battle that ensued
made all of the previous battles look like childs play. The battle lasted an entire week.A victor
could not be determined because of the heavy losses on both sides. Each army began the battle
with 100,000 men. In the end, only 20,000 men had survived. By the time the kings realized
what was happening around them it was too late. The valley had been changed forever.
In most cases, time heals all things. Given enough time, even the roughest relationships
can be restored and the deepest wounds healed. And so it was with the two kings. King Stephan
and King Clayton vowed never to go to war again. Both kingdoms recovered from their heavylosses after several years. However, no amount of time could heal the damage dealt to the Valle
del Paraiso. The once-beautiful valley had been turned into a vast wasteland. The ground had
been dyed red from the blood that was spilled on it. Fires had burned away every bit of
vegetation. And the once-shining Rio Diamonte was transformed into the Scarlet River. The
water was tainted by the blood that flowed into it from the countless corpses. Even now, its water
continues to be as red as blood, and any living thing that drinks from its poisonous, red-tinted
waters becomes gravely ill. King Clayton and King Stephan did everything in their power to
restore the valley to its former grandeur, but to no avail. Because of their greed, the Valle del
Paraiso had been transformed, indefinitely, into the Valle del Muerte the Valley of Death.
