Wednes-DIY… milk jug self -watering

planter

My spinach is growing up so fast!

I worked on my apartment garden a bit more yesterday, and I made some bigger self-

watering containers to hold smaller stuff like herbs for the kitchen (obviously, this will

not work for tomatoes or eggplants or pumpkins).

Like I said, I’m not very good at remembering to water plants (or remembering not to

overwater plants), so self-watering containers are pretty much my ideal. Cotton strings

(only use cotton, btw, synthetics don’t have the same wicking action) act as training-

wheel roots, drawing water from the reservoir in the bottom half of the milk jug and

distributing it evenly around the top half; all the forgetful gardener has to remember todo is occasionally make sure the reservoir isn’t out of water.

I thought I’d try to illustrate the process of making these supremely useful and almost-

free self-watering pots out of old milk jugs with pictures rather than words. Show, don’t

tell! OK, here we go:

(Oops, some words are needed here. The strings don’t wick up water very well if

they’re dry, so you need to soak them for a few minutes. Also, I forgot one step – tie a

knot in each string a couple inches from the end so they don’t work their way down.)

Curl the strings over so they cover different levels and areas of the pot as you fill it up

with dirt. This will make sure the water is evenly distributed.

I forgot another step: cover the seed holes with more dirt (it’ll say on the seed packet

how much dirt) and water it a little more.

So yeah, those two times you water it from the top are going to be the only times you

ever water it from the top. All you have to do now is just put it in a sunny place and

make sure the bottom half of the milk jug isn’t empty and you’re golden!

Best Self Watering Solutions for

Container Gardens

This morning we talked

about expanding crystals to help save water while keeping plants alive in the heat. We

thought we'd delve into the archives and round up our favorite self watering products so

that you can rest assured your plants are taken care of and enjoy the summer, like going

on a weekend getaway:

containers, too.

Has anyone made their own self watering container? what's the longest you've gone

without having to water something (without it dying)?

The DIY Self-watering Herb Garden forApartment Dwellers

So you’re more Park Avenue than Green Acres, but your inner Thoreau is pining for a garden

 plot out in the countryside?

Don’t fret – with a few simple items, a bit of

outdoor space (a rooftop, Juliette balcony, or

even a sunny windowsill will do), and some

TLC, you can plant the herb garden of your

dreams. Those with a little more time and

space can graduate to a Do-It Yourself,

vegetable-filled, self-watering grow box, but that’s the subject of a different article.

To start, you’ll have to chow down on some yogurt, or find a friend who likes the stuff.

You’ll need two “family size” containers, (32 oz should do – I use Dannon and

Stonyfield Farms) as well as a smaller container (the ones with the foil-pull lids are

perfect for this project!). You’ll also need a straw or hose, a box cutter (or scissors),

and a handheld drill.

The project has a few simple steps:

1.  Cut a hole in the bottom of one of the larger

containers that is a bit larger than the diameter of the

smaller yogurt container (it should be just large

enough so that the smaller yogurt container fits about

halfway up.)

2.  Drill a hole in the bottom of the same larger

container and thread the straw or tube through so that

it sticks out of the top and bottom.

3.  Insert the small yogurt container into thelarger one. Then, drill several small holes into the

exposed bottom half of the small container.

4.  Take two connected containers (with the straw or tube connected) and place

them inside the other large yogurt container. You should have something that

looks like two stacked yogurt containers with a tube or straw sticking out. Drill

a small hole just below where the two containers meet – this will be your

“overflow” hole, so you don’t have to worry about overwater ing.

5.  Fill the container with soil, ensuring that it gets all the way into the lower small

yogurt container. Be careful not to get soil into the straw/tube, or it will be

difficult to get water to the bottom reservoir.

6.  Using a watering can or funnel, fill the lower reservoir with water through the

tube. You’ll know it’s full when water starts dribbling out of the overflow hole.

7.  Plant your herb seeds as directed, and place the containers in a warm, sunny

location. Wait for the magic to happen!
