Brazil
Thanks to Diversity, Brazilian Culture is One of the Richest in the World
There is a different Brazil in each region of this continental country. We are a single nation, but
with different customs, ethnic groups, nationalities, creeds, cuisines, accents and lifestyles. A
rich blend that makes Brazilian people known as one of the most hospitable and cheerful in
the world. Here you will see traditional and historical cities listed as World Cultural Heritage
Sites by UNESCO coexisting side-by-side with modern architecture. You will see the creativity,
the religiosity of the people in the streets and in popular festivities and manifestations, such as
the Carnival. A display of colors, music and joy! You will take part in the biggest New Year’s Eve
fireworks show of the planet at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. And when you think you
have seen a bit of everything in Brazil, you will find out that there is much more to experience.
Lifestyle and Gastronomy
We know differences do not have to be conflicting. Quite the contrary, in Brazil they are cause
of celebration. In fact, there is one particularly significant trait that expresses Brazilian identity
to perfection: the countless popular feasts. Celebration is an integral part of the national
character. There is no great difference between religious events or pagan festivals. It is through
their popular manifestations that the Brazilian people show their zest for life.
In fact, Brazilian cuisine is a mix of influences from Europe, Indigenous Brazil, and Africa and
influences the world in turn, indulging our visitors with remarkable quality. The exotic fruits,
spices and the creative ways locals use them, inspire great chefs. The most popular dish is
called feijoada, always served piping hot. It was created by the African slaves from the leftovers
of the Portuguese masters’ meals. It goes with both the national spirit, cachaça, or the drink
made from it, caipirinha, blended with sugar and fresh lemon. Other popular dishes are
acarajé and colonial breakfast.
Brazil for International Meetings and Business
The growth of business and events tourism in Brazil is largely due to the excellent
infrastructure available: a large network of top-ranking hotels and resorts, excellent airports,
transportation, telecom and financial services. Beyond this, of course, there are other
attractions like the varied, tasty cuisine and the wide range of options in entertainment and
shopping.
Brazil has the largest, most important market for trade fairs in South America. This is
particularly evident in economic sectors in which Brazil has a strong international position.
These include textiles, footwear and accessories, jewelry and precious stones, foodstuffs,
plastics, building materials, aeronautics, agribusiness and instruments for the health sector.
Add to all this the fact that Brazil has a rapidly expanding economy with a domestic market of
over 180 million people, a predominantly urban population. The modern, diversified industrial
park, strong, dynamic commerce, advanced technology in various sectors, and an agriculture
and livestock sector that is among the most highly developed and productive in the world all
make Brazil a virtually inexhaustible source of investment.
That is why we can affirm that a business trip to Brazil – be it for trade fairs, congresses,
symposia,
business meetings and events, for shopping or technical reasons – is always a visit with
guaranteed
returns in every aspect. Brazil in the Top 10 Countries
According to the International Congress
& Convention Association (ICCA), Brazil
places de 9th position worldwide and
the 1st in Latin America in number of
international events. In 2013 Brazil
hosted 275 international meetings,
following the necessary criteria to be
included in ICCA’s database, which are:
meetings must rotate among other
countries, attract a minimum of 50
participants and must be at least in the
3rd edition.
Useful Information
Currency – The currency in Brazil is the
Real (R$). Dollars, euros and traveller’s
checks can easily be exchanged in hotels,
authorized banks and currency exchange
offices.
All international credit cards are accepted in
most hotels, shops, restaurants and
commercial establishments. On average,
tourists can consider an exchange rate of
around USD 1 = R$ 2,20 and EUR 1 = R$ 3,00
(Junho, 2014)
Visas and Passports – An entry visa is not
required for holders of passports from
European or South American countries.
Visas are only required for visitors from
countries adopting the same policy for
Brazilian citizens. Tourist visas can be
renewed for a period of 180 days per year.
Passports must be valid for at least six
months after the planned date of arrival in
Brazil. For further information access:
www.mre.gov.br or www. braziltour.com
Language – Portuguese is the national
language, but both the vocabulary, accent
and intonation are very different from what
is heard in Portugal and other former
Portuguese colonies. In hotels and tourist
centres English and Spanish are spoken to
better attend foreign tourists.
Time Zones – Brazil covers an area of 4
different time zones. The time zone of
Brasilia (capital of the country) is the
national standard and is 3 hours behind
Greenwich Mean Time, most of the year. In
the summer, most of the brazilian states
move their clocks one hour ahead.
Voltage – In the majority of Brazilian cities
the electriccurrent is either 110 or 220 volts.
Nevertheless it is advisable to confirm the
voltage before plugging in any appliances.
Car Rentals – Rental cars, with or without a
driver, are available for tourists at the main
airports and in city centres. You should
book in advance. Ask about the traffic
legislation of the place you are going to
visit. For further information access:
www.abla.com.br.
Taxis – There are large fleets of taxis in
most cities. Regular taxis, with a meter, can
be hailed in the street. Radio-taxis can be
called by phone.
Transport – For air travel, the main
national airlines cover most domestic
flights. There are also regional airlines,
offering high levels of comfort and safety.
Buses are also a popular kind of transport
for travelling between states.
Tipping – Most restaurants and bars
usually include a 10% service charge in the
bill. But you can leave a little more if the
service was good. When it is not included in
the bill, the general rule is a tip between
10% and 15%. Taxi drivers do not expect to
be tipped.
Communications - Any part of the world
can be reached in real time by phone, fax or
e-mail. The Brazilian cell phone market is
the second largest in the world, with 650
thousand new lines sold every month.
Santa Catarina Strategic State
Santa Catarina is a peculiar state, a land of a thousand ways. Located in the south region of
Brazil, between the states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, this small Brazilian state, with just
over 6 million inhabitants, gathers in its simple 95,400 km² such a diversity of scenarios that
surprises its visitors with the variety of its natural landscapes and preserved environmental
richness. Scenarios of blue sea, white sand dunes, placid lagoons and the sandbank vegetation
give way to the large woods of the Atlantic Forest, araucaria forests, canyons, waterfalls, hot
springs and snowy mountains. Azorean
fishermen, Italian farmers and German
industrials: a land of beautiful and definite
contrasts; and that is the reason why it is so
fascinating.
In economics, these contrasts are repeated. A
strong agriculture based on rural
smallholdings shares the space with an active
industrial park; the fourth largest in the
country. Large-scale industrial plants and
thousands of small businesses spread across the state, linked to consumer centers and ports
of export by an efficient road network. These roads also increase tourism, an innate vocation
of the small state, now the third largest national tourist hub.
The balance and dynamism of Santa Catarina’s economy are reflected in the high rates of
growth, literacy, employment and per capita income, which are much higher than the national
average. These figures surprise and complement the fascinating profile of one of the most
productive and beautiful Brazilian
states.
General Data
Total Area: 95,346 km²
Population: 6,248,436 inhabit (IBGE,
2010)
HDI: 0.840 (ONU, 2010)
GDP per capita: R$26,760.00 (IBGE,
2011)
Cultural Diversity
The current population of Santa Catarina is formed
by a mix of different people, who have shaped the
multifaceted face of the people of Santa Catarina.
It was the Portuguese who explored Santa Catarina,
spreading warehouses and villages along the coast
from the sixteenth century on. The Azorean
immigrants came much later, in the eighteenth
century, and it was they who colonized and shaped
the human being type that is so special and that
inhabits the State’s 500 km of coastline.
In the second half of the last century the Germans
arrived, spreading out over the Itajai River valley,
going into the countryside in search of better land
and opportunities. With hard work and
determination, they built the thriving industrial face
of Santa Catarina. Joinville, Blumenau, Brusque and
Pomerode are cities that preserve this strong
German heritage in their architecture, cuisine, and
accent and through popular festivals such as
Oktoberfest.
At the end of the century it was the Italians’ turn to
arrive in the largest migratory movement already
received by Santa Catarina. They mainly occupied
the southern region of the state, near the coast, and
to this day cities such as Criciúma, Urussanga and
Nova Veneza preserve traditions inherited from the
pioneers: grape growing and wine making, the love
of good food, joy and religiosity.
But today the mosaic of human types that makes
up the people from the state of Santa Catarina also
includes the drovers who made the route between
Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, the Japanese, the
Austrians and the people from Rio Grande do Sul,
who occupied the fertile lands of the west. All of
them are responsible for the rich cultural and
sociological diversity of Santa Catarina.
The beautiful cities of Santa Catarina preserve the
history and customs of the natives and the settlers - their legacy is visible in the architecture,
cuisine, folklore and celebrations.
Floripa Greater Florianópolis
The quality of life is the main feature of this region, which allies urban development with
environmental preservation. There are 13 cities - the capital, Florianópolis; São José, Palhoça,
Biguaçu, Governador Celso Ramos, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Águas Mornas, Rancho
Queimado, São Pedro de Alcântara, Angelina, Anitápolis, São Bonifácio and Antônio Carlos -
which all share the exuberant nature. The municipalities of Greater Florianópolis are very close
together, which allows to explore the region in lovely itineraries of one day or two and discover
several places, each with its
own characteristics and
attractions. Across the region,
the Azorean heritage coexists
with Germanic traditions.
São José, Palhoça, Biguaçu
and Governador Celso
Ramos: These four continental
municipalities form two large
bays with the Island of Santa
Catarina. São José stands out
by its vibrant trade, as well as
by its important industrial
district. Biguaçu also has industries, but preserves the nature and the past, and has the
Portuguese-Azorean architectural complex as the city’s landmarks; a monument that highlights
the historical significance of the city. Palhoça has rural characteristics and beautiful beaches,
among them the famous Guarda do Embaú. Governador Celso Ramos occupies a large,
carefully drawn peninsula with 23 paradisiacal beaches.
Águas Mornas and Santo Amaro da
Imperatriz: Located on the slopes of Serra do
Tabuleiro, they are hot springs resorts with
great hospitality infrastructure. Hydrothermal
springs, which flow in the two cities with an
average temperature of 39ºC, have therapeutic,
aesthetic and relaxing properties.
São Pedro de Alcântara, Angelina and
Rancho Queimado: these are municipalities
along the way to Serra do Mar, with rural
characteristics and a well-preserved nature. São
Pedro de Alcântara was the central pole of
German settlement in Santa Catarina and is still
one of the most authentic Germanic
communities in the state. Known as Valley of
Grace, due to its strong religious appeal,
Angelina has the Santuário Nossa Senhora de
Angelina; a shrine considered as one of the
finest in Santa Catarina. Rancho Queimado, with
a mountain climate, has a great number of
tourist attractions, especially the well-preserved
Casa de Campo Hercílio Luz Museum.
Anitápolis, Antônio Carlos and São Bonifácio:
The three cities of German colonization, offer
the opportunity of living with nature with
stunning landscapes. Antônio Carlos is the area
closest to the coastline that features a natural
incidence of Araucaria pines. To the south, there
are Anitápolis and São Bonifácio, famous for its
beautiful waterfalls. Both offer the opportunity
to get to know the traditions of European
immigrants and to go hiking in the midst of
preserved forest with waterfalls and clear rivers.
Floripa - Quality of Destination
Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, has 436 km2 of natural beauty, where
ponds and more than 43 paradisiacal beaches give shapes and contours to a unique and
exciting destination. However, the main qualities and the potential of the city in hosting major
events are not only in its natural splendors but also in modern and efficient equipment, and
the urban, human and social infrastructure. It is one of the capitals with the highest level of
quality of life in Brazil.
According to the criteria of the United Nations, Florianópolis is considered the most developed
capital of Brazil and the third best city in the country to live in, with a Human Development
Index compatible with the world's best cities.
Florianópolis is one of the top five Brazilian cities for business, according to a research
conducted by Urban Systems, based on 27 indicators divided into the following subcategories:
• Socio-demographic
• Economy
• Health
• Education
• Finance
• Transportation
• Telecommunication
A tourist capital of MERCOSUL and
one of the three capital islands of
Brazil, Florianópolis is the second
leisure tourist destination most visited
by foreigners, according to a survey
released by the Ministry of Tourism
(2012). Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, a
large area of Florianópolis (97.23%) is
situated on the Island of Santa Catarina, with
around 43 beaches, considering also the
continental ones. Basically, Florianópolis is divided
into five main regions: in the island - East, North,
South and Central; and the mainland. More than a
territorial division, each of these regions has its own
characteristics and attractions, composing a varied
cultural mosaic, and full of different options.
Dados Gerais Florianópolis Área total: 424,4 km²
População: 421.240 hab
PIB: R$17.907
IDH: 0,847
Clima verão: 25° a 30°
The environment
The island of Santa Catarina has existed for about
two million years, and during this time nature has
made available an extraordinary biodiversity
composed of beaches, rivers, mountains, forests,
dunes, salt marshes and mangroves, that the
authorities and the local population have the task
of protecting, that is, a true paradise for eco-
tourism. There are 30 Conservation Units regulated
by law that occupy 1/3 of its territory; 437 km2 of
the island, making this city an ideal place for
ecology lovers.
There are over 43 beaches cataloged between the
island and the mainland that offer options for all
tastes. On one side, where the island faces two
bays, there are beaches that look like pools, on the
other hand, you can practice the most radical water
sports, without even mentioning the alternative
options, like the naturalism practiced on Galheta
beach.
Gastronomy
Floripa has the largest seafood nursery in the
country, which is part of the local gastronomic
culture. One of the typical dishes of the island is the
Sequência de Camarão (breaded shrimp) that
originated more than 60 years ago, when the
fishermen from Lagoa da Conceição used to
prepare this delicacy and offer it to tourists.
The capital city has a great number of restaurants
of different specialties that, with great quality,
appeal to all tastes, from the more exotic options to
the refinement of the best international cuisines.
This diversity occurs because the city receives many
university students and people from different
cultures; therefore this miscegenation provides
Florianópolis with a wide gastronomic variety.
Historical Heritage
Florianópolis is the result of dreams, wishes and
actions of those who preceded us over centuries
of history. For the people from Florianópolis, this
legacy is a particular privilege, in the way it was
built on varied backgrounds, merging the
contribution of natives and immigrants, who have
left traces of their roots, traces of their cultural
heritage, ancient traditions and art forms from
various genres.
Visiting Florianópolis is also a great opportunity to
take a trip through time. There are more than 46
historic sites, including Churches, Museums and
Forts built since 1739, which formed the Island’s
defense system against the Spanish invaders. They
have been restored and are currently open to the
public.
The most well-known symbol of Florianópolis and
the city’s landmark, the Hercílio Luz Bridge is
considered unique. It is one of the largest
suspension bridges in the world.
Opened in 1899, the Public Market is a historical
and cultural milestone of the city where many
artists, bohemians and intellectuals gather. In its
cheerful and relaxed atmosphere, you find the
very best in seafood, as well as bars and
restaurants specializing in the cuisine of the island,
crafts and commerce in general.
One of the oldest centers of the Azorean
colonization, its museums and colonial
architectural complexes preserve colonial houses
and customs, such as the production of canoes,
bobbin lace, and baskets and hampers, which are
made from jungle vines. Further, in popular belief,
there are supernatural legends and myths, such as
boitatá, the werewolf, the woman with two heads,
the giant from the Lagoon and witches – who are
always ready to do evil deeds and enchantments.
Road Access
Travelling by bus or car through the BR 101 highway
has been the choice for many people coming to
Florianópolis. Thus, the ease of mobility of Congress
participants from southern Brazil (PR and RS) would
be facilitated by the short distance and road quality.
The 300 km duplicated highway in the northern part
has stunning views. The duplication works of the
southern part of the highway is in its final stages.
Air Access
Located in the southern part of the Island, the
Hercilio Luz International Airport is only 20 minutes
from downtown (11 km), main hotels, Convention
Center of Florianópolis and 40 minutes (40 km) from
hotels in the northern part of the Island. It is the
14th busiest airport in the country. Due to the
excellent weather conditions of its geographic
location, the airport has recorded a high level of
operability over the years; above 99%. With such
movement the current passenger terminal has
become modest for the growth of Florianópolis, so
the city is set to gain a new airport.

Culture and Leisure Leisure
Florianpolis is known for being multifaceted and cosmopolitan. The island of Santa Catarina is
a fenced stronghold of options for those who love sports, the outdoors, enjoy nature,
nightlife... The leisure options that are offered around here are countless: from the simple
happy hour bars in the late afternoon to the agitation of the best nightclubs, going through
cafes, theaters, alternative houses, and nightclubs with varied songs. There are plenty of
entertainment options for visitors, who can choose the tradition of nightclubs at Avenida Beira
Mar Norte, near the city center, to the differentiated options of Lagoa da Conceição. The city
also has main stores and designer brands found in large cities, in addition to its 5 shopping
centers that offer variety and quality of customer service.
The island also has several options for sports activities. The water sports are highlighted: from
north to south of the island there are beaches suitable for surfing. As to Lagoa da Conceição, it
is more colorful with windsurfing and kitesurfing sails, and sailboats.
In the sky, paragliding is the choice for those who want to see the island from another angle.
There are jump ramps on various east and north beaches.
For the adventurous, hiking trails are plentiful. With multiple difficulty levels, and to be carried
out on foot or by bike, they lead to remote locations, where nature is secular and not touched
by modernity. It is also possible to explore Florianópolis and enjoy rides such as tree climbing,
mountain biking, abseiling, scuba diving, fishing, rafting, hang-gliding, among others.
Hercílio Luz Bridge
The governor of the state in the 1960s, Hercílio Luz, decided to build the bridge to consolidate
Florianópolis as the Capital of Santa Catarina and which was considered very difficult to access.
Since it was closed, in 1982, as a measure of safety, the Hercílio Luz Bridge became the symbol
of the city. The classic work of international engineering, with 821 meters in length and 339
meters in central span, was declared a historical and artistic heritage. The viewpoint located at
the insular headboard provides one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the city center.
Historic Center of Florianópolis
A stroll through the historic center of Florianópolis is not just about visiting and enjoying the
facades of buildings in different architectural styles. The tour reveals the essence of the city.
The Metropolitan Cathedral, a more imposing building, blends its story with the story of Our
Lady of Exile, as Florianópolis was formerly called, which grew around the then newly created
parish. The XV de Novembro Square and its centennial fig tree are located in front of the
Cathedral. The square was the venue for many popular demonstrations, like the Novembrada
in 1979. Victor Meirelles and Cruz e Souza Museums are also located in the immediate vicinity.
Walking toward the bay you will find the Memorial Miramar, the Customs House, built in 1875,
and the Florianopolis Public Market, which was built in 1898 to replace the old market and
houses a total of 140 stalls. The stalls sell seafood, footwear, clothing, plus the works of
ceramic, straw and wicker crafts. The building also brings together several bars in its center
space, making it a meeting point for locals as well as for tourists. Its center is the scene of mass
demonstrations, the traditional pagoda dances on Saturdays and the Carnival festivities.
Recently the CDL entity - Florianópolis launched a high guided script that allows visitors to
travel back in history and see 25 historic sites, in a practical and objective manner.
Lagoa da Conceição
The Lagoa da Conceição neighborhood gathers beaches, dunes, mountains and the largest
lagoon of the island. With such diversity, the place became the best-known natural tourist spot
of Florianópolis. The waters of the lagoon with an average temperature of 27°C, little depth
and an absence of waves allow you to practice numerous sports, such as wind surfing, jet
skiing and kayaking. The center of the Lagoon is the meeting point with bars with live music, as
well as shops and restaurants. On Rendeiras Avenue, one can find handmade bobbin lace
being made and marketed. It is also in the Lagoon that the Luciano Martins Gallery is located, a
visual artist who signs the illustrations in this dossier.
Beaches
Nationally known for the beauty of its 43 cataloged beaches, Florianópolis offers options to suit
every taste. On one side, where the Island is facing two bays, the quieter beaches are found.
On the other side, with landforms, are the beaches of rough waters, where you can practice
the more radical water sports. In the north of the island lies the Daniela Beach, which with its
calm sea attracts many families to its shores. The popular Jurere beach, located also in the
North Island, is the scene of major events and world famous for its Beach Clubs. In the South,
the Campeche beach, a meeting point for young people, attracts attention with its exuberant
nature and excellent waves for surfing and kit-surf. In the eastern region are the famous
Joaquina beach and Praia Mole (“soft beach) beach that takes its name from the loose and soft
sand. It is mainly frequented by surfers and paragliders who use the southern slope as a
takeoff ramp.
Campeche Island
Located on the east coast of Florianópolis, in front of Campeche beach, the island has a rich
ecosystem and is home to a significant portion of the archaeological heritage of Santa Catarina.
Formed by cliffs and hills covered by Atlantic Forest vegetation, it has a unique beach with fine
sand and crystal clear waters. To know the cliffs, archaeological sites and rock monuments, you
need to take one of the monitored trails. The boats of the association that manages the island
depart from the Armação beach and the crossing takes about half an hour.
Historic neighborhoods: Ribeirão da Ilha and Santo Antônio de Lisboa
Florianópolis has two historic strongholds that preserve the legacies of Azoreans who
colonized the city. Ribeirão da Ilha was the first community in Florianópolis to be inhabited in
the sixteenth century, by the Carijós Indians. Between 1748 and 1756, with the effective
colonization of the island, 50 Azorean couples settled in the locality. Ribeirão da Ilha is
composed of several small beaches, calm waters and coarse sand. During this same period
Santo Antonio de Lisboa was also settled; a place known as a haven of beautiful buildings and
beautiful landscapes. From the beach you can sight the North Bay and the Continent. Both
neighborhoods retain, in addition to the rich traditional architecture, customs inherited by
Azorean settlers, such as the celebration of the Império do Divino Espírito Santo (Empire of the
Divine Holy Spirit) and artisanal fisheries, a reason that attracts tourists and lovers of good
food. The cultivation of oysters and clams supplies several restaurants with seafood dishes on
their menus.
Boi de Mamão
Among the folkloric expressions most practiced by people from Florianópolis, the
“Brincadeiras de Boi” (Ox Games) stands out, demonstrating the eminently rural character of
the Azoreans who landed here.
Presented in the form of a pantomime - a kind of gestural theater, with few dialogues during
the act - the play depicts in comic tone, a bullfight in arenas, according to Iberian rituals, which
were adapted to juvenile practices.
The play shows the desperation of Mateus, a simple cowboy from the interior of the island,
who, seeing his pet ox dead, fetches a doctor and a healer to resuscitate him. At the end, the
ox comes back to life and everyone celebrates with singing and dancing.
During the show, various
characters appear, including:
Bernúnça: An “evil dragon”
with a giant mouth that runs
into the crowd in an attempt to
swallow them. According to
tradition, Bernúnça eats
disobedient or unbaptized
children and the child would
then become part of its body.
Its origin is due to Coca, a
monster that paraded in
Catholic parties in the region of
Galicia, city of Allaris.
Maricota: A very tall woman who spins and swings her arms, intentionally reaching for the
public.
Each creature has a melody and rhythm different from the others, and consequently, with
varied styles of dance and choreography. The characters are made of cloth, sponge, Paper
Mache, wire, wood and various materials.
The group consists of elements that form the singing and is led by the caller, and is usually
accompanied by an accordion and percussion.
The Ilha da Magia (Island of Magic), known for its charming beaches, climate and natural
beauty, can also be appreciated for its rich culture. The people with Azorean roots have many
stories to tell, and cultural and historical representations are scattered throughout the city.
Bilro (Bobbin) Lace
Among our remnants of
Portuguese life is the famous
bobbin lace. On the Island of
Santa Catarina, bobbin lace
appeared under the influence
of the Azores in the eighteenth
century. While men spent long
periods in the fishing activity
with handmade nets, women
spent their free time weaving
yarn on bobbin cushions. The
lace produced was sold in the
city market or exchanged for
products of basic necessity to increase the family income in a cultural tradition, passed on from
generation to generation, and that originated the popular saying “where there's lace, there is
income.”
Among the best-known bobbin lace produced in Florianópolis, there are “Maria morena” and
“tramoia”, or “renda de sete pares”, which is considered a typical product of the state, mainly
produced by artisans in Ribeirão da Ilha, Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Lagoa da Conceição.
