A população brasileira ainda

sabor. E que sabor!

Bom apetite.

Quer dizer: boa leitura.

Regardless of whether it is a reality in Bra-

zil or any other nation, when someone

starts planning their next meal (an appe-

tite is always a good thing) they should

always consider or include at least one

vegetable – preferably several, and in

plenty of different colors. If not, your meals will certainly be less inte-

resting, and far less nutritious.

Fresh produce from a garden or farm, irrespective of its size, are

vital for the body and directly associated with a healthy lifestyle. Brazilians

still largely neglect this logic by failing to consume adequate amounts of

vegetables at the levels recommended by the World Health Organization.

Brazil continues to maintain the same levels of demand per capita

and, by extension, its production and trade levels, which are far below

what a country of Brazil’s size is capable of and below its consump-

tion needs. The available area, soil types, climate and vocation in the

country’s varied regions allow any, absolutely any kind of vegetable on

It’s MARkET daythe planet to be planted. As a result, all that is needed is for the popu-

lation to wake up, get interested in learning and consuming, making

cultivation economically viable among the primary sector by regulat-

ing demand, and Brazil will become a true paradise for this vital sector.

The sheer diversity of species (which far exceed one hundred)

and varieties that, through research efforts, now contain nutrients and

organoleptic properties that were previously unthinkable, make the

vegetable garden a place that challenges and excites cooks, gour-

mets and chefs, from novices to the most experienced. By updating

information on domestic production, markets and technological inno-

vations, the 2014 Brazilian Vegetable Yearbook provides a panorama

that inspires and encourages reads to consume more farm-grown

produce and live a healthier life.

Then next time you go grocery shopping – and hopefully after you

read the annual edition it will be soon – remember: life can be filled

with much more color, aroma and, especially, flavor. And what flavor!

Enjoy!

Com muito APETITE

A horticultura brasileira apresenta certa

estabilidade na produção, com leve

crescimento, mas menor disponibili-

dade (consumo), pois fica abaixo do

crescimento populacional.

neladas.

É o caso de man-

dioca, batata-inglesa e cebola, enquanto o tomate, com pequena

recuperação, ainda não atingiu a produção anterior. O fato gerou

2008 e 2012, a área cultivada diminuiu 0,9%, a produção aumen-

tou 4,2%; e a produtividade, 6,6%.

Brazilian horticulture shows a degree of

stability in production, with slight gro-

wth, but less availability (consumption)

since it falls below population growth.

The latest data calculated by Embrapa

Hortaliças, covering 32 crops up to the

year 2012, indicate that this year the total produced recovered to

around 18 million tons and has remained there since 2007, though

A hearty APPETITEVEgETAbLE PRODUCTION RECOVERS IN 2014 AfTER A PERIOD Of DECLINE IN MAjOR CROPS AND DIffICULTIES CATERINg TO THE MARkET

rising to 19 million in 2011. The same is true for cassava, featured in

this Annual and which, alone, accounted for 23 million tons in 2012

and 25 million tons the previous year.

In 2013, affected by climate problems, production of major crops

once again declined, with figures already available. These include

cassava, potatoes and onions, whereas tomatoes recovered slightly

though without reaching previous levels. This made it difficult to meet

market demands and led to a rise in prices. Initial estimates for 2014

indicate a possible improvement in the supply of these foods.

“The vegetable market and production have shown slight

growth, primarily as a result of technological development”, remarks

Waldir de Lemos, head of the Ceasa Grande Rio Commercial As-

sociation of Producers and Users and the Board of the Supply

Chain for Vegetables, associated with the Ministry of Agriculture,

Livestock and Supply (Mapa). Research by Embrapa Hortaliças,

presented by Nirlene Junqueira Vilela, confirms this fact in noting

that between 2008 and 2012, the country’s cultivated area declined

by 0.9%, production rose 4.2% and productivity grew by 6.6%.

The director of the sector also commented that “aspects such

as production costs, inadequate logistics, failure to promote con-

sumption and discrete rural expansion policies” lead to dissatisfac-

tion and lack of dynamism. Nevertheless, Waldir acknowledged

that “efforts are currently underway, including significant scientific

advances, to improve our production and Embrapa is increasingly

asserting itself as a global benchmark”. As a result, he believes that

“in the medium term, by overcoming many of the problems identi-

fied, we will see significant growth in the sector”.

Campeão OTIMISTAPESQUISA EM SãO PAULO, MAIOR ESTADO PRODUTOR DE HORTALIÇAS, APRESENTA jULgAMENTO POSITIVO DA SAfRA E PERSPECTIVAS DE CRESCIMENTO NA NOVA ETAPA

abastecimento do mercado consumidor”, assinalam, registrando

12

Page 15: HORTALICAS 2014 ANUARIO

bastante positiva, e a meta é estendê-lo a outras regiões. Paralelamente, destaca Schmidt, a preocupação é adequar o produtor a novas tecnologias, a

Missões técnicas no País

encontrar trabalhadores. Os contratados geralmente são de bai-

xa formação e têm pouco acesso a capacitação.

A historic step was taken towards the

Brazilian Horticultural Institution’s pri-

mary goal of achieving better under-

standing of the reality of vegetable

growing in the country with the study

titled “Profile and Needs of Olericul-

ture in São Paulo”, conducted in June 2013 through the Brazilian

Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae-SP). Accord-

ing to Carlos Schmidt, president of the institution for the sector

and an executive in the Association of growers and Distributors

of Fruits and Vegetables (Aphortesp), São Paulo is historically the

country’s largest vegetable producer and for this reason was cho-

sen as the initial focus of the study.

According to the latest information on the state’s overall produc-

tion, published by Waldemir Pires de Camargo Filho, Felipe Pires

de Camargo and Ana Maria Montragio Pires de Camargo of the

A SURVEy IN SãO PAULO, THE LARgEST VEgETAbLE gROwER AMONg bRAzILIAN STATES, fORECASTS A POSITIVE HARVEST AND PREDICTS gROwTH IN THE NEw PHASE

DIVERSIfICATIONCommenting on the study, the director of Ibrahort noted that, in

regard to leafy vegetables, one producer will grow almost all such produce (different types of lettuce, watercress, cabbage, kale etc.).

With respect to other items, some growers specialize in tomatoes or potatoes, whereas legume farmers grow on average five different

types. The study and its extensive data were presented at the meeting of the Horticultural Board on April 10, 2014 and was very well received,

with the aim being to extend it to other regions of the country. At the same time, president Carlos Schmidt points out that the

overriding concern is to help growers adapt to new technologies in order to increase productivity and revenue, in addition to providing

the necessary assistance to ensure the medium and long-term plans for the sector are achieved. Technical missions within the country

and abroad, as well as events such as seminars on minimally processes products, are among the initiatives forecast for 2014

geared towards strengthening trade associations and cooperatives.

Agricultural Economics Institute (IEA) it is estimated that in 2011 São

Paulo accounted for 21.13% of the Brazilian total. They reported a

volume of 4.1 million tons, with 53 cultivated species over 145,300

hectares, against a total of 19.4 million tons for the country as a

whole. According to the researchers, “in addition to being Brazil’s larg-

est vegetable growing state, São Paulo also has the widest range of

products for supplying the consumer market,” also recording growth

in relation to 2010 when production reached 3.8 million tons.

Sebrae’s 2013 survey covered 600 growers with up to 100

hectares (an average of 10 hectares) and 20 crops. Most farms are

family-owned and, according to data for 2012 turnover is up to R$

60,000 a year in 80% of cases. The last year studied was considered

positive by 83% of vegetable growers and 53% expected growth in

the following season. 2.4 people in the family worked in the operation

and most growers reported difficulties finding workers. Those hired

are generally uneducated and have little access to training.

Also according to study data, conventional growing predominates

(96.2%, of which 3.8% is organic and 0.7% hydroponic), as well as

the open-field system (93.2%). On average, losses reach 17.6%;

transport is carried out exclusively by third parties (69%), personal

selling accounts for 68% of the total, but there is a strong presence of

middlemen (57%). Other aspects relate to concern over processing

(60.3%), new production technologies (54% in new pesticides and

fertilizers, and 70% in the case of onions, potatoes and tomatoes),

organic manure (63%) and proper disposal of packaging (92%).

O consumo de hortaliças no País ain-

da não corresponde às necessida-

des e às potencialidades. Mesmo

que não haja atualização de dados

a respeito – o último oficial é do Ins-

as prefeituras. Foram instalados 28 bancos de germoplasma em

diversas comunidades no Estado e são avaliados sistemas orgâni-

Do tradicional ao MODERNOINCENTIVO AO CONSUMO CENTRA AÇõES EM HORTALIÇAS NãO CONVENCIONAIS E CHAMA A ATENÇãO PARA ALTERNATIVAS MAIS PRÁTICAS EXIgIDAS NA ATUALIDADE

atrativas voltadas à satisfação do consumidor.

16

Page 19: HORTALICAS 2014 ANUARIO

The consumption of vegetables in the

Country still doesn’t match the needs

and the potential. Even though there

is a lack of updated data on the is-

sue – the last official report is from the

Brazilian Institute of Geography and

Statistics (IBGE) in 2008 and shows a small reduction, to 27 kg/

person – this conclusion is present among farmers and leads to

greater pursuit of incentives for product use by the organizations

and in sync with the government. The benefits for health and

income improvement offer arguments to increase demand and

endorse initiatives in the field that include anything from a redemp-

tion of typical products that had fallen out of favor to the encoura-

gement of new production and presentation alternatives.

The recovery of the so-called non-conventional vegetables

for cultivation and cooking, are some of the objectives of a pro-

gram developed in Minas Gerais by the Agricultural Research

Company (Epamig), by the Technical Assistance and Rural Exten-

sion Company (Emater-MG), along with the Federal University of

Viçosa (UFV), the Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa), Embrapa, and the

local city administrations. Twenty-eight germplasm banks were

installed in several communities in the State and organic planta-

tion systems are evaluated for species such as sorrel, arrowleaf

elephant’s ear, and leaf cactus.

On the other hand, trying to reach the modern consumer who

has less time to prepare food and is more demanding, the sector

is paying attention to new product options to be offered. With this

in mind, smaller sized alternatives gain traction, such as mini-to-

matoes, and mini-lettuce, with hybrid seeds developed by biotech

companies, and also products with some processing. Especially

the so-called pre-cut or minimally processed vegetables are in-

creasingly well received by the consumers.

That was the Discovery of the eight year (2005-2013) research

on the evolution of the consumption of minimally processed veg-

etables done by Andréa Gonçalves de Almeida, for her Master’s

thesis in Agribusiness from the University of Brasília, in 2013. This

year, 66% of those interviewed were said to be willing to pay more

for these products, while in 2005 the proportion was around

46%. Grocery store managers, when asked, confirmed the sales

growth of this option and the increased demands of consumers

that require increased attention to quality.

The issue was also highlighted at the 3rd Brazilian Congress of

Fruit and Vegetable Processing, held in September 2013, in Ilhéus,

Bahia. Embrapa researcher Murilo Freire Júnior mentioned that in

Brazil, the consumption of these products will tend to grow due

to their practicality and the more effective use of the vegetables.

He also highlighted that the global trends in this area point to new

packaging with innovative design and attractive colors geared to-

ward pleasing the consumer. In 2014, the Brazilian Horticulture

Institute (Ibrahort) plans to hold seminars about this specific topic

in Santa Catarina and Paraíba.

500 mil toneladas e US$ 560 milhões, em 2013 o déficit pas-

tor.

A melancia, segunda

EXTERNAL helpTRADITIONAL VEgETAbLE IMPORTS INCREASE 30% by VOLUME IN 2013 AND EXPAND THE SEgMENT’S TRADE bALANCE DEfICIT

The Brazilian international trade bal-

ance for vegetables continues to lose

to traditional imports, especially for

some products such as potatoes,

onions, and garlic. After a slight re-

covery in 2012, when the difference

between imports and exports was a bit above 500 thousand tons

and USD 560 million, in 2013 the deficit surpassed 740 thousand

tons and USD 840 million.

The purchase of vegetable products abroad grew 28.8% in

2013, in comparison to the prior year, surpassing 1 million tons, ac-

cording to the survey made by the Anuário Brasileiro de Hortaliças

(Brazilian Vegetable Yearbook). In monetary value, it surpassed the

USD 1 billion barrier. The numbers are records when considering

the historical period from 2000 to 2012, surveyed by Nirlene Jun-

queira Vilela, researcher for Embrapa Hortaliças in Brasília (DF).

The sector’s imports, in general, have been growing. During

a 10 year period, from 2003 to 2012, the variation in imported

volume reaches 70.7%, and when considering five years, the rate

is still 16.5%. Meanwhile, the exports did not keep up at the same

pace. During this ten year period, they grew a bit, 8.1%; but dur-

ing the five year period analyzed there was a reduction of 21.8%.

SLIgHT gROwTH Foreign sales are significant only for crops that are considered

fruit and vegetables at the same time, such as melon and watermelon. Melon exports, as analyzed in the Anuário Brasileiro

de Fruticultura 2014 (2014 Brazilian fruit Culture Yearbook), has suffered from the European economic crisis, where the main clients are concentrated, as well as facing problems with higher maritime

freight charges and import tariffs. But the destination of the oleracea fruit abroad (over 56% of the

production) is recovering, and in 2013 grew 5.3% in volume and 10% in revenue, with a favorable exchange rate. The performance allowed a slight increase in the overall exports of vegetables: 2.2% in volume

and 4.7% in monetary value, reaching 265 thousand tons and USD 234 million, respectively. The watermelon, the second most exported,

had a bit lower performance, while other crops showed some increase, such as sweet-corn, the third on the ranking, with 23%.

Meanwhile, for the main horticultural imports, foreign help increased significantly in 2013. Onions, the second most imported product, had an increase of 48% in volume and 74% in monetary

value, when compared to the previous year. In relation to the most important item, the potato, especially in a prepared and processed format, the entry into Brazil increased almost 30% in quantity and

over 50% in monetary value. Most of the vegetables that are normally imported were brought

in greater amounts in 2013. Among them, the tomato and the pea, as well as several seeds. In general, the reality of foreign trade for

the segment once again offers a major challenge for the production chain to seek better results in the area’s balance of trade.

revelando a importância econômi-

ca da atividade, além da grande

representatividade social que ela

possui, pois requer muita mão de obra e abrange muitos pequenos

produtores.

ro atingiria a R$ 7,7 bilhões. Os produtos iniciais referidos, de fato,

tiveram altas cotações, principalmente no primeiro semestre, com

A produção atinge 19,2 milhões de toneladas in natura.

Levantamentos apresen-

THE PRODUCTION PROCESS

The numbers are considerable when

calculating the revenue from vegetable

sales in Brazil, revealing the economic

importance of the activity, as well as

the social effects it represents, becau-

se it requires lots of labor and includes

many small farmers. In regard to income, even without complete

calculations, the existing information point to tens of billions of reals

obtained from the sale of the production, easily surpassing BRL 20

billion on the production chain.

The value of the Brazilian production for the sector, just at a pri-

mary level, circulated about BRL 12.6 billion annually, according to

the estimates made by Waldemar Pires de Camargo Filho, Felipe P.

de Camargo and Ana Maria Montragio P. de Camargo, in an analy-

sis of horticulture in Brazil and São Paulo, with 2011 data. But the

Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (Mapa), through

the Office of Strategic Management (AGE) finds Gross Production

Values (VPB) for 2013 that surpass that amount in only three cul-

tures (tomato, potato, and onion).

In data released in March of 2014, a source stated that the re-

corded monetary value for tomatoes in 2013 was BRL 9.7 billion,

for potatoes was BRL 4.7 billion, and for onion, almost BRL 1.7

billion. And in the strong cassava crop, the financial results would

reach BRL 7.7 billion. The first mentioned product did, in fact, have

high price quotes, especially during the first semester, with less

available production and even a highlighted impact on inflation. With

more supply later on, however, price reductions occurred and even

showed negative rates over the 12 month figures.

Regardless, the significant participation of horticulture in the Bra-

zilian agricultural income should be recognized, reaffirmed by the

sales at the largest depot for the sector in Brazil and Latin America

– the Company of General Depots and Warehouses of São Paulo

(Ceagesp). In 2013, its total financial activity was BRL 6 billion for

vegetables.

Also, the segment is noted for the large amount of people in-

volved, so that there is already difficulty in obtaining labor, which is

reflected in the costs. Surveys presented a few years ago, which

did not include cassava, ensured the participation of over 7 million

people in the Brazilian vegetable farming activities.

SEEDS THAT yIELDThe most recent horticultural figures for Brazil, which will be

presented in more depth by the Brazilian Association of Seed and Seedling Trade (ABCSEM) during Hotitec 2014, reinforce the importance of the sector. The association has a project to survey

socioeconomic data of the vegetable production chain in Brazil, during the 2012/13 cycle that reveals that the main 18 segments of the

sector’s products multiplied by seeds yielded BRL 14.21 billion just at the farm level and BRL 26.84 billion in the wholesale level (Ceasas).

If the retail/consumer market is considered, the amount reaches BRL 53.49 billion, according to Steve Udsen, ABCSEM president.

The association estimates that the total vegetable crop reproduced by seeds in Brazil is about 800 thousand hectares and says that

the cultivated area of the 18 surveyed sectors is 656,730 hectares. The production reached 19.2 thousand tons in natura. The cultures

included in the survey were: zucchini squash, hybrid winter squash, lettuce, beets, broccoli, onion, carrot, cilantro, cauliflower, green beans,

watermelon, melon, sweet-corn, cucumber, bell pepper, okra, cabbage, fresh market tomatoes, and processing tomatoes.

da Cadeia Produtiva de Hortaliças

para permitir maior avanço no seg-

vínculo no Ministério da Agricultura,

Pecuária e Abastecimento (Mapa) e reunindo diversas entidades

tam melhor proteção do cultivo e, assim, possibilitem aumento da

produtividade.

“As emba-

Outro ponto fundamental é a análise,

tativa do segmento e nosso melhor sonho”, conclui.

A set of issues are being addressed in

the Sectorial Chamber of the Vege-

table Production Chain to allow for

greater advancement of the vegeta-

ble sector in Brazil. With a link to the

Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and

Food Supply (Mapa), and gathering several sector agencies, it is

a channel for discussion and dealings that are seeking, along with

the government and several other bodies, to help develop the va-

rious areas in the technical, sanitation, and nutritional fields where

there are needs to be met.

“We have a reoccurring situation that reveals the dissatisfaction

of the farmer with the cost of production, who has the percep-

tion that the market’s growth is less than the population’s natural

growth rate,” said Waldir de Lemos, director of the production

area of the Ceasa Grande Rio (Acegri) and president of the secto-

rial chamber. He also noted that “there is a lack of a more effective

rural extension to effectively pass on the technological advances

in behavior and processes to the farmers.”

Regarding the issues more recently dealt with by the chamber,

Lemos mentioned that the sector is continually interacting with the

National Health Inspection Agency (Anvisa) for regulations regard-

ing new defensive agents that allow better crop protection, and

The driveTO gROwTHE HORTICULTURAL SECTOR HAS DEMANDS IN THE TECHNICAL, SANITATION, AND NUTRITIONAL AREAS TO SEEk AfTER MORE DEVELOPMENT IN PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION

that will thus allow productivity gains. “We need more responsive-

ness from the agency to release them,” he emphasized.

At the same time, there is support for studies and research

for the development of packaging that reduces the losses during

transportation and storage of the products. “The packages need

to the standardized, following the principle of saving and food

safety, in regard to decontamination of products,” he said.

Also on the agenda, “the sector seeks subsidies so that farm-

ing will suffer less from the effects of real estate speculation.” An-

other fundamental point is the analysis, along with the Brazilian

Horticultural Institute (Ibrahort) and with the Support Services for

Micro and Small Businesses (Sebrae), of marketing strategies to

encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables. “We will still

release a nationwide campaign to make school lunches a special

moment for nutritional reeducation, in order to show that the regu-

lar consumption of natural harvest products work in favor of the

population’s health and the Nation’s economy,” said Lemos.

The sector defends a policy of nutritional reeducation to in-

crease the consumption of these products, and also reinforces

the need to be able to rely on a more effective rural extension pro-

gram. “By meeting the demands that are shown to exist, and with

the advance of important research that is already being developed

in academic centers of renowned excellence, we will achieve

greater productivity and therefore, lower the cost of healthy food

for the people,” he said. “That is the expectation of our segment

and our best dream,” he concluded.

MODERNIzATION The federal government, through the National Supply Company

(Conab) and other partnerships, has developed the Brazilian Program for Modernization of the Horticultural Market (Prohort) since 2005, which also seeks advances. Their Market Information Project, done with the Brazilian Association of Supply Centers (Abracen) and with the Department of the Treasury, should have their database used to support agricultural and economic policies in May 2014. The Supply Centers (Ceasas) were responsible for 50% if the domestic trade for the sector, and that main outpost (São Paulo) sold 3.3 million tons of vegetables in 2013.

The company also announced its technical cooperation agreement with the Spanish state owned company Tragsa to train agents that work in the production chain and to improve the quality of the vegetable products. They also said that Mapa released a new directive (no. 339 on April 11, 2014) that increases the scope of the program, inserting subsidies to include micro and small farmers and the use of agri-ecological techniques, as well as the training and other ways to foster the production and distribution of foodstuffs.

A participação do Brasil na produção

mundial de hortaliças figura entre

entre os 10 primeiros colocados em

cinco produtos e nas denominadas

“outras culturas”. No primeiro lugar,

classificação, e numa fruta olerícola (a melancia).

tomate e a cebola.

Domínio CHINêSA CHINA DOMINA AMPLAMENTE A PRODUÇãO MUNDIAL DE HORTALIÇAS, ONDE O bRASIL MARCA PRESENÇA COM MANDIOCA, MELANCIA, TOMATE, CEbOLA E MELãO

pais hortaliças do Brasil, embora ocorra forte importação do bulbo.

Na sequência, a melhor colocação brasileira vem no segmen-

to de “outras hortaliças”, onde o País é o décimo maior produtor.

(19º) e batata-inglesa (20º). A batata, aliás, é o produto hortícola

batata (inglesa e doce), tomate, cebola, alho, melão e melancia.

Brazil’s participation in the global vege-

table production ranks among the top

10 in five products and the so-called

“miscellaneous crops.” In first place,

there is nobody like great China, while

the Brazilians pinch at the leading po-

sitions (fourth in 2012) in cassava, once included in this classification,

and in an oleracea fruit (watermelon). In this condition, the Brazilian

melon also reaches the ninth position, along with tomato and onion.

In the cassava crop, where African Nigeria is the champion, Brazil

came close to second place in 2011, with 25.3 million tons, almost tied

with Indonesia, who produced 25.9 million tons. In 2012, according to

the forecast data available from the United Nations Food and Agricul-

ture Organization (FAO) and reported by the National Supply Company

(Conab) in a September 2013 report, Brazil would be in fourth place,

after Nigeria, Indonesia, and Thailand, who recovered their production.

Brazil’s presence in fourth place in watermelon appears in a

survey by Embrapa Hortaliças in Brasília (DF), done by researcher

Nirlene Junqueira Vilela, and also using the FAO estimates for 2012.

With over 2 million tons of the product, Brazil comes right after Chi-

na, Turkey, and Iran.

It is not by accident that watermelon is one of the products that

stand out among Brazil’s exports for the sector. There is also the

melon, the main oleracea product exported by Brazil, which, in the

world ranking for this crop, reaches ninth place. The tomato and the

onion also reach this level, which are among the main vegetables of

Brazil, even though there are major imports of the bulb.

In the ranking, Brazil’s next best position is in the segment “miscel-

laneous vegetables,” where the Country is the tenth largest producer.

Among the selected products, Brazil is among the top 20 positions

for garlic (13th), yams (14th), sweet-potatoes (19th) and potatoes

(20th). Actually, the potato is the horticultural product with the greatest

weight of the sector, with over 365 million tons, followed by cassava,

with 281.7 million tons; tomatoes, with 161.8 million tons; watermel-

on and sweet-potatoes, with 105 and 103 million tons, respectively.

For almost all of the specifically researched products, and also

those considered “miscellaneous crops,” China stands out as the

largest producer, followed by India – the two most populous coun-

tries in the world, both with over 1 billion inhabitants. The first is,

for example, the leader in potatoes (regular and sweet), tomatoes,

onions, garlic, melon, and watermelon.

(35.303 toneladas), Santa Catarina (18.734 t), Minas Gerais (17.628

t) e Rio Grande do Sul (16.835 t).

mercados regionais, e são cultivados desde o Sul do Rio Grande

dutividade igual à do Cerrado do Brasil”, destaca.

There’s no sitting on the fence when it

comes to garlic. With garlic there is no

middle ground: you either love it or you

hate it. But it seems that Brazil is home

to countless enthusiasts who appre-

ciate that unique taste that garlic lends

to both the simplest and most sophisticated of dishes.

This passion becomes even more apparent with the realization

that the entire volume of domestic production supplies Brazilians

themselves. According to the National Association of Garlic Grow-

ers (Anapa), the crop supplies about 32% of internal needs and the

country’s major consumer and distribution markets are concentrat-

ed in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salva-

dor, Recife, Espírito Santo, Fortaleza and Manaus. Given the strong

internal appreciation for the crop, the sector expects it will eventual

be capable of supplying up to 80% of national consumption needs.

According to the manager of Anapa, Cristina Barbosa Neiva,

in order to cope with demand, Brazil imported more than 17 mil-

lion 10kg boxes of garlic in 2013. Of these, approximately 12 mil-

lion boxes came from China and 5 million from Argentina. Cristina

points out that Brazil’s 2013 harvest produced 108,393 tons of gar-

lic over a planted area of 10,213 hectares. These figures result in

average productivity of 10,610 kilograms per hectare.

With respect to quality, agricultural engineer and honorary presi-

dent of Anapa, Marco Antônio Lucini, reports that the 2013 cycle

in the Midwest and Southeast surpassed that of 2012 due to a

favorable climate, with cool nights. “Quality was a decisive factor in

ensuring that the prices paid to farmers remained at the same level

as the previous year, even though the price of Chinese garlic has

from May to July 2013 and the plantations are excellent. The harsh

winter means a good quality crop is expected for 2014”.

Brazil’s major garlic growing states are Goiás (35,303 tons), San-

ta Catarina (18,734 t), Minas Gerais (17,628 t) and Rio Grande do

Sul (16,835 t). According to Lucini, the country grows 8,000 hect-

ares of purple garlic a year and around 4,000 hectares of ordinary

garlic. “Regular garlic varieties are aimed more at regional markets

and are grown from southern Rio Grande do Sul to the Northeast”,

he explains. “Prime purple garlic is produced primarily in the South

by around 2,000 small farmers, who harvest an average of 11,000

to 12,000 kilograms per hectare.”

Another 5,000 hectares of prime purple garlic are also cultivated

in the Cerrado region, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Bahia, harvesting an

average of 16,000 tons per hectare. “There is currently not a single re-

gion in the world that rivals the productivity of Brazil’s Cerrado region”.

De geração em geração, os versinhos

inspirados no início do ciclo desta

A produção

batata chips; 10% é perdida, devido a problemas fitossanitários e

sanitários, principalmente no solo”.

“Neste momento, a

“As anteriores

From generation to generation, the popu-

lar Brazilian children’s rhyme “potatoes

as they grow/ spread their roots across

the earth/ little girls when they doze/ sle-

ep with their hands across their hearts”,

inspired by the beginning of the potato’s

growth cycle, have been recited and repeated by countless chil-

dren. Perhaps as a result of hearing and repeating these lines so

often, Brazilians have grown increasingly fond of the potato.

According to data from the Brazilian Potato Association (Abba),

Brazil harvests an average of 2.5 to 3 million tons of potatoes ev-

ery year across a planted area of 90,000 hectares. Almost the

entire volume of domestic production is for the internal market:

10% is used as seeds for planting; 10% is designated to the fro-

zen pre-fired French fry industry; 15% to the potato chip industry;

10% is lost due to phytosanitary and physiological problems; and

55% reaches the market as fresh produce.

According to Abba’s General Manager, Natalino Yassushi

Shimoyama, exports are sporadic and small in volume, averag-

ing less than 1,000 tons a year, generally destined for Argentina

and Uruguay. These shipments are typically motivated by adverse

weather events (heavy rain, drought or frost) in these countries.

In Brazil, potatoes are a year-round crop and the director be-

lieves that, in general, planted area has steadily declined while pro-

ductivity has remained stable. “The decline in the area is basically

related to high production costs, labor shortages and the informal

nature of trade”, he says. “Yield stability is elated to climate varia-

tions and phytosanitary problems, particularly in the soil”.

According to Shimoyama, 2014 will see a shortage of pota-

toes on the market due to water shortages in some major farm-

ing regions. The current potato shortage is related the extended

drought and record temperatures experienced in January and

In relation to potato sales which, according to Abba, are the

world’s third most consumed food, the director reports that count-

less changes have taken place over the last two decades, primar-

ily with regard to varieties. “Previous varieties (Bintje, Achat, Barak,

among others) have been replaced (Agata, Cupido, Asterix, Mon-

more productive and unfortunately, varieties highly suitable for

culinary applications have been replaced by others that are more

physical appealing, but have less quality as a food”, he says. “This

ultimately leads to consumer dissatisfaction and, consequently,

reduced consumption”, he explains.

cultura registrou área, volume e rendimento menores.

ção à produção, o volume diminuiu 12,6% e a produtividade caiu

0,6%. A colheita totalizou 479,4 mil toneladas em 2012, contra

548,4 mil toneladas em 2008. A produtividade chegou a 11,9 to-

O Rio

Nesse ano, a produção gaúcha contabilizou 153,7 mil toneladas,

Neste ranking, o Brasil ocupa a décima-nona posição.

(37,5 mil toneladas). O maior rendimento médio por hectare, de

35 toneladas, é obtido no Mato Grosso, que cultivou 183 hecta-

res em 2012. Na região de Presidente Prudente, em São Paulo,

Sweet potatoes have gained increa-

sing prominence as a healthy food

and are recommended as part of a

low calorie diet. The roots and vines

can also be used as animal feed. In

industry, it serves as a raw material

for producing alcohol, flour (starch), bread and sweet pastries.

The species produces hardy plants that tolerant dry conditions

well, have high potential and low production costs. Experiments

underway have shown that the crop is an alternative source of

biofuels. For the time being, the vegetable’s potential uses have

not yet affected domestic harvests. Recent years have seen lower

volumes, yield and planted area.

Compared to 2008, planting in 2012 showed an average de-

cline of 12%, as reported by the Brazilian Institute of Geography

and Statistics (IBGE) in the latest survey by Municipal Agricultural

Production (PAM 2012). In 2008 planted area covered 45,600

hectares, against 40,100 hectares in 2012. In regard to produc-

tion, volume decreased by 12.6% and productivity fell by 0.6%.

The 2012 harvest totaled 479,400 tons, against 548,400 tons in

2008. Productivity reached 11.9 tons per hectare.

Sweet potato is grown all over Brazil, with greater prominence

in the South, Southeast and Northeast. Planting is carried out

the state totaled 153,700 tons over an area of 12,300 hectares.

Average yield was 12.4 tons per hectare. The municipalities if

Mariana Pimentel and Vale do Sul recorded the largest harvests,

varying between 9,000 and 10,000 tons a year.

In descending order, the largest volumes were obtained in the

states of Paraná (47,100 tons), São Paulo (41,400 tons), Sergipe

IMMENSE POTENTIAL

The first biofuel plant using sweet potato was opened in Tangará da Serra, Mato

Grosso state, in October 2013. Twenty years of research have proved sweet potatoes’ efficiency as an ecologically correct raw

material for biofuel.Researcher Aldo Marcos Silva, responsible

for implementing the project in the municipality, reports that the discovery was revolutionary in

bioenergy because it ensures ethanol is less expensive due to low production costs and the

potential energy generated by the root starch. He also explains that ethanol production from sweet potatoes cannot compete with that of sugarcane or corn, but it can be complementary. Initiatives aimed at producing ethanol from sweet potatoes are currently being developed in the states of Rio

Grande do Sul, Paraná and Tocantins.

AbROAD The sweet potato ranked 8th on the list of

the main vegetables exported by Brazil in 2013. Shipments fell in that year, but revenue grew. Shipments totaled 2,784,168 kg, 1% less than exports in 2012, according to data from the Board of Foreign Trade (Secex), part of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). Revenue was USD 2,188,420 in 2013, an increase of 21% over the previous year, of USD 1,812,538.

Worldwide, sweet potatoes are planted in 116 countries, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Global production was 103.145 million tons in 2012, over an area of 8.087 million hectares. In the year under study China produced the largest volume worldwide of 73.140 million tons over a planted area of 3.472 million hectares. The second largest figures were recorded in Nigeria, with 3.4 million tons produced over 1.115 million hectares. Brazil is placed 19th on this ranking.Research confirms that

E a cebola produzida no Brasil

conquista os mais seletos paladares. A demanda é tanta que a

colheita nacional sequer supre totalmente o consumo dos brasi-

leiros.

a quantidade produzida no País é destinada para consumo in-

terno.

Além do país

vizinho, também são fornecedores constantes Holanda, Espanha

42

e Chile.

toneladas no total.

final do ano.

There are those who use it a perfect

their face will go unnoticed (since it

makes the eyes of those who peel or

gives a special touch to both the simplest and most sophisticated

recipes. And onions produced in Brazil delight the most deman-

ding of palates. Demand is so high that national supply cannot

fully meet the demands of Brazilian consumers. As a result, the

country is considered a major importer of the vegetable, importing

around 240,000 tons a year.

According to a survey conducted by the Brazilian Institute

of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in March 2014, a total of

1,610,699 tons of onions were harvested across the country in

2013, over a planted area of 55,445 hectares. The study indicates

that the major producers among Brazilian states were Santa Ca-

tarina, Bahia and São Paulo. According to the president of the

National Association of Onion Growers (Anace), Almir Schaffer,

almost the entire crop produced in the country is destined for in-

ternal consumption. Exports, when they occur, are to Argentina

and are aimed at compensating for supply difficulties when the

neighboring country experiences climate problems.

With regard to imports, Schaffer reports that, since the creation

of the Mercosur two decades ago, Brazil has purchased around

200,000 tons from Argentina every year. In addition to the neighbor-

ing country, the Netherlands, Spain and Chile are also consistent

suppliers, with lower quantities of approximately 40,000 tons.

The last cycle proved unsatisfactory for Brazilians. In 2013,

the country experienced onion supply problems in the first quarter

due to crop losses in the south of the country in 2012/13. For the

president of Anace, climate problems were the main cause of the

losses. “Hail, high winds and drought diminished southern crops

by 20% for a total amount of 150,000 tons”, he says.

In the second quarter of 2013, production in the Southeast

and Cerrado regions was above average, resulting in excess supply

by the end of the year. “As a result, prices paid to farmers during

the period fell to less than R$ 0.42 per kilogram, considering the

reference value for production cost”, remarks Schaffer. In January

2014 prices reacted and reached an average of R$ 0.80 per kilo.

The main innovations in onion growing are still related to mech-

anized production, the expansion of sowing and the adoption of

more productive varieties. According to the president of Anace,

direct sowing is set to continue with strong acceptance. “In Santa

Catarina for example, it could reach up to 50% of the cultivated

area in the 2014 harvest”, he says. “Attempts are being made

at mechanized harvesting across farming regions, particularly the

cerrado region, and the use of hybrids has increased considerably

in the Southeast, Goiás state and the Northeast”.

ENQUANTO A PRODUÇãO MANTéM-SE PRATICAMENTE ESTÁVEL, OS PREÇOS DA CENOURA AO PRODUTOR OSCILAM COM AS INTERfERêNCIAS DO CLIMA E DO MERCADO

Altos e bAIXOS

a produção brasileira praticamente estáveis.

Conforme especialistas do Centro de Estudos Avança-

principais ambientes de produção do País, a produtividade

média foi baixa na temporada de verão. O rendimento ficou

a oferta no Sul.

A expectativa

Highs and LOwSwHILE PRODUCTION HAS REMAINED PRACTICALLy STAbLE, THE COST Of CARROTS fOR fARMERS VARIES ACCORDINg TO CLIMATE AND MARkET INTERfERENCE

The financial return for Brazilian car-

rot farmers experienced highs and

lows throughout 2013, influenced by

market and climate factors in both

the summer and winter harvests. Al-

though prices were lower, they remai-

ned above production costs which kept the sector and Brazilian

production almost stable. Although the activity is still profitable, the

fall in prices charged for the root vegetable in the 2013 winter and

2013/14 summer harvests discouraged new investment for 2014.

This is the scenario indicated for the production chain, since

official authorities do not have updated information. Embrapa

Hortaliças, for example, recently published statistics for 2012 that

show a 6% increase in cultivated land, from 25,000 to 26,500

hectares. There was a 5.7% fall in productivity, which declined

from 31.2 tons per hectare to 29.4 t/ha, and domestic production

decreased from 780,800 to 780,500 tons.

According to specialists from the Center of Advanced Re-

search in Applied Economy of the University of São Paulo’s Luís

de Queiroz School of Agronomy (Cepea/Esalq), who surveyed

around 10,000 hectares of the country’s major production envi-

ronments, average productivity was low during the summer har-

vest. Yield was 51.6 tons per hectare between December 2012

and July 2013, particularly in the states of Minas Gerais, Paraná

and Rio Grande do Sul due to heavy rainfall.

The fall in supply from April onwards generated record nominal

values: R$ 29.50 for a 29 kg box (R$ 1.02/kg). The average final

price paid to the farmer per box in these regions between Decem-

ber 2012 and July 2013 reached R$ 24.54. The value was 63%

higher than the previous season and almost double the minimum

production cost of R$ 12.30 a box.

Despite the fact that cold weather reduced supply in the

South, the winter carrot harvest from July to November 2013 did

not maintain return. The lowest price of the year was recorded in

48

Page 51: HORTALICAS 2014 ANUARIO

SLOwDOwNThe 2013/14 summer harvest showed no new

developments. The sector and production remained stable and yields remained below those recorded for the previous harvest. Increased supply from March onwards contributed to reducing farmer’s margins. At the same time, cultivation

for the winter harvest began in late March and early April, which should maintain the same industry and production

characteristics as the previous cycle.Farmers are not keen to invest because of the prices

charged. Though profitable, cultivation does not provide margins that allow expansion of the sector or investments,

since increased supply would exert even greater pressure on prices. Productivity would still depend on climactic variables.

The expectation of the El Niño phenomenon in Brazil is a concern for some production centers given the possibility of

water shortages or excess water.

A busca crescente por hábitos alimen-

tares mais saudáveis junto à popu-

lação brasileira, diante da onda de

obesidade que põe em alerta os or-

ganismos de saúde pública, aponta

para a tendência de incremento na

demanda nacional de hortaliças. O movimento deve favorecer

sumidor, interferem no mercado.

No Brasil,

agregado.” Segundo ele, hoje, 65% da alface produzida no Brasil

50 SHADESof greenbRAzILIAN PRODUCTION Of LETTUCE, CAbbAgE, AND OTHER LEAfy VEgETAbLES IS STAbLE, bUT THE TREND IS THAT CONSUMPTION wILL INCREASE OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL yEARS

The search for search for healthier

eating habits among the Brazilian

population, who face a wave of obe-

sity that has put the public health

authorities on alert, points to a trend

of increasing domestic demand for

vegetables. This trend should especially impact the leafy vege-

tables, such as lettuce, cabbage, arugula, collard greens, and

watercress, among over 50 varieties of vegetables. Even though

the official government agencies don’t generate current national

statistics, the sector works with a forecast of gradual consumption

increase, reflected in the production and area planted.

However, the supply concentration in certain seasons, the cli-

mate, the need to make processes more efficient – from produc-

tion to the consumer’s table, all interfere with the market. In 2012,

2013, and 2014, the production areas remained stable. In Brazil,

in 2011, the agribusiness players estimated that the production of

lettuce and cabbage was 2.59 million tons, with 123.58 thousand

hectares under cultivation. Cabbage had a total of 1.32 million

tons, and lettuce, 1.27 million tons. In 2012, the total reached 2.6

million tons, a volume that was repeated in 2013 and should be

maintained in 2014, with a cultivated surface area of 123 thou-

sand hectares and 124 thousand hectares, respectively.

As a mandatory ingredient for a well-balanced meal, leafy veg-

etables enrich Brazilian cuisine nutritionally and also created busi-

ness opportunities for farmers that seek special markets – the so

called gourmet segment. These include vegetables with special

packaging, presentation, sizes, organic production systems, or to

supply haute cuisine restaurants, market niches, etc.

“The consumer, especially those that travel abroad and have

more purchasing power, are seeking quality vegetables more and

more,” said researcher Fábio Suinaga, of Embrapa Hortaliças, in

Gama (DF). “This opens the markets with high value added.” Ac-

cording to him, 65% of the lettuce produced in Brazil is leaf let-

tuce, 25% in iceberg, and the rest are of other varieties, such as

butterhead, summercrisp, and romaine.

wITH AN EyE ON THE MARkETAccording to Bruna Abrahão Silva, an analyst of the leafy vegetable

market from the Center Of Advanced Studies in Applied Economics of the

Luiz de Queiroz Agricultural College at the University of São Paulo (USP),the

investment in planting area after the high process of the 2012 winter harvest

led to greater supply. As a result, the price quotes were lower in the 2013

season in the production clusters in the State of São Paulo. The increased

supply put downward pressure on the prices till July, when strong rains

damaged the plantations, reducing supply and allowing the leafy vegetables

to move up in price.

A box with 24 units of leaf lettuce at the Company of General Depots and

Warehouses of the State of São Paulo (Ceagesp), which in January 2013

reached a monthly average of BRL 23.75, reached BRL 18.33 as the best

benchmark price from May to November 2013. On average, from May to

November, the box of leaf lettuce with 24 units was sold at Ceagesp for BRL

9.89, a drop of 39% in comparison with the same period in 2012.

UNSTAbLE CLIMATEThe drought that hit the Central region of Brazil

in the summer of 2014 affected the harvest of leafy vegetables. As a result, the box of leaf lettuce at

Ceagesp was sold in March 2014 for BRL 35.31, a 14% in relation to February, and with a significant advance

in relation to the 2013 winter. But the excess heat burned the leaves and roots of the lettuce. The long

drought period also cause viral and bacterial disease, which caused a drop in production and quality. The continuation of the drought and the forecast for El

Niño create and expectation for stable or a little less production for winter 2014, which should continue until

the summer of the 2014/15 cycle.

A previsão

Trabalhou, assim,

com ociosidade média de 53,5%. Outro efeito, a exportação do

One of Brazil’s most prominent

basic products, cassava suffered

the effects of one of the most se-

vere droughts ever recorded in the

Northeast. National production fell

by 8% to 21.2 million tons in 2013,

according to data provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography

and Statistics (IBGE) in March 2014. Included among the vegeta-

ble family, it surpasses all others despite the reduction in volume,

which is expected to recover in 2014. The prediction by the same

institute for March of that year is 22.6 million tons (6.87% more).

The climate in 2013 changed the expected scenario in the

cassava production chain completely, with one of the worst

droughts ever seen in the Northeast, as recorded by the Center

for Advanced Research in Applied Economy in a study conducted

in partnership with the Association for Brazilian producers of Cas-

sava Starch (Abam). The study notes that, to meet the demand

for cassava flour, Northeastern buyers purchased the product

from the Mid-South. The price of cassava and its derivatives rose

sharply, reaching record levels.

The average nominal value for a ton of cassava in the indus-

try hit R$381.69 in 2013, a 61.1% increase on the average price

for 2012, according to Cepea. With respect to starch, the annual

average reached R$ 2,125.09 a ton, rising 58% in relation to the

previous season. With this, the Gross Value of Production (GVP)

of starch was R$ 1.007 billion, the highest amount on record, hav-

ing only come close to this in 2004, when GVP hit R$ 990 million.

Greater competition for raw materials also interfered in move-

ment within the industry. In relation to starch, 70% of which is fo-

cused in the state of Paraná and is also experiencing growth in

Mato Grosso do Sul, 7.6% less was ground in 2013, with a total of

473,720 tons and an average of 53.5%. Another effect was that ex-

ports of the product (6,200 t) declined by 14% in relation to the pre-

vious year, whereas imports increased 29% to 15,700 tons. Brazil-

ian shipments of dextrin and other modified starches rose 7.2%,

closing at 43,900 tons, with 8,200 tons in imports (15.2% more).

ENERgy ACROSS THE wORLDFor 2014, the IBGE’s initial predictions, made in March, indicate

recovery in Brazilian cassava production, which should come close to the amount recorded in 2012. That period closed out at 23 million tons, the same level recorded 10 years ago, while interim volumes were higher (nearly 27 million tons in 2006/07).

Higher quantitative increases were observed in 2014 in Paraná, the second largest producer, with 4.239 million tons (9.68% higher than 2013); and in Maranhão, with 1.631 million tons. The northeastern state, previously hampered by drought, is set to experience growth of 23%, potentially overtaking Bahia, ranked third. The northern state of Pará, a leader in cultivation, should remain at 4,681 tons.

MULTIPLE bENEfITSWith the goal of minimizing the effects of drought in the

Northeast, the Reniva project is a multiplication and transference network of cassava micropropagation materials with genetic and phytosanitary quality. It forecasts the installment of 68 multiplication units for plantlets; according to the Department of Regional Development (SDR) of the Ministry of National Integration, the goal is to reach more than 14,000 growers within six years.

The project is run by the Cassava and Fruit Harvesting unit of the Brazilian Enterprise for Agricultural Research (Embrapa), based in Cruz das Almas (Bahia state), which contributes to structuring the cassava farming chain, says researcher Carlos Estevão Cardoso. The issue featured prominently at the 15th Brazilian Cassava Conference, held in October 2013 in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia. Other topics addressed were market opportunities during the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, as well as further popularization of cassava in well-known and more sophisticated dishes.

On Cassava Day, celebrated on April 22, the Embrapa unit reiterated that the root vegetable, which originated in South America, is today one of the major energy sources for more than 600 million people around the world, particularly in developing countries. It is grown in more than 80 countries, with Brazil ranked third alongside Thailand, after Nigeria and Indonesia. According to the research institution, with each passing day carbohydrate-rich cassava becomes more firmly established as a functional food that provides the body with energy and fibers, which regulate intestinal function, as well as being an alternative for those who suffer from Celiac disease and have gluten intolerance. In addition, farmers associations aim to promote its use in municipal school meals.

TOMATE Tomato

ESPECIAL Special

O tomate é um vegetal essencial na

vida dos brasileiros. E o consumi-

dor está cada vez mais exigente,

obrigando os horticultores a se

profissionalizarem, para apresen-

tar ao mercado um produto de

qualidade.

especialidades (1%). Os principais estados produtores são, pela or-

dem, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia e Goiás. Juntos, representam

No caso

58

No primeiro semestre, o produto atingiu preços recordes.

abastecimento, principalmente no segmento grape.

The tomato is a vegetable that is essential

in the life of the Brazilian. And the consu-

mer is more and more demanding, re-

quiring the vegetable farmers to be more

professional, so that they can offer the

market a quality product. To reach this

result, it is common to use varieties that are more productive and resis-

tant to disease, as well as to take greater care with handing measures.

These good practices, however, are not enough to ensure a

successful crop. In 2013, the table tomato crop was harmed by

weather problems. According to the biannual report of the Brazilian

Association of Seed and Seedling Trade (Abcsem), some of the fac-

tors that compromised production and led to a drop in productiv-

ity, of about 12%, were the lack of water in the Northeast and the

strong summer heat wave in the Southeast. The fruit is very sensi-

tive to high temperatures. The attack of pests also grew in intensity

According to the association’s survey, the production of table to-

matoes reached 3.04 million tons in natura in 2013, remaining stable

in relation to the prior year. The sector is divided into the following seg-

ments: salad (47%), Italian (40%), Santa Cruz (12%) and specialty (1%).

The main producing states, in order, are São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Ba-

hia, and Goiás. Together, they represent about 60% of the total crop.

The report surveyed that the monetary value of the production reached

BRL 2.913 billion, while the total spent in inputs was BRL 1.351 billion.

However, the Systematic Agricultural Production Survey (LSPA)

of the IBGE has more complete data regarding the domestic to-

mato production. In 2013, the forecast released in April 2014 is for

a harvest of 3.987 million tons in an area of 60,523 hectares. The

estimate for 2014 is for an increase in 1.73% in volume and 3.38%

in surface area planted, i.e., 4.056 million tons and 62,566 hectares.

Abcsem president Steven Udsen believes the trend is toward

MARkET SIgNALS In 2013, tomato was seen as one of the main villains in the

inflationary increase of Brazil. In the first half of the year the tomato hit record prices. The highest price quote was seen in March,

according to the monitoring done by the Center of Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) of the University of São Paulo (USP).

The kilogram of the fruit (salad type) reached BRL 5.73 at the General Depot and Warehouse Company of São Paulo

(Ceagesp), the main supply center in Brazil. With the increase in supply during the second half of the year, due to strong

harvests in production regions, the price quotes dropped, with some reaction occurring as of October 2013.

The Cepea researchers believe that the record prices in 2013 should not happen again in 2014. The year began with an intense

supply of tomatoes. The April report states that productivity can be damaged in some regions, due to the Thrips insect, which has

attacked the crops in various locations.

area stability. According to his understanding, the gains will happen

through productivity increases, and the training of the vegetable farm-

ers, using more advanced handling techniques. “There may be an

increase in cost, but it will also generate more income,” said Steven

Udsen. He also emphasized that some farmers invest in their own

brands and packaging, selling directly to grocery store chains, instead

of selling to supply centers, especial in the grape tomato segment.

tria.

Brazil is the seventh largest global sup-

plier of tomatoes for industrial pro-

cessing. For 2014, the expectation

is a 7.7% increase in country’s pro-

duction in relation to 2013, reaching

1.615 million tons. The data was re-

leased in the April report of the WPTC – World Council of Tomato

Processors, an international organization that represents 95% of

the volume of the fruit destined for processing.

In global terms, the organization says there will be a 17.6% in-

crease, with a harvest of 38.845 million tons. The largest producer

is the United States, specifically the State of California, with a fore-

cast of 12.247 million tons in 2014, with an increase of 11% in re-

lation to 2013. Next in line are China, Italy, Turkey, Spain, and Iran.

Monitoring done by the Center for Advanced Studies in Ap-

plied Economics (Cepea), of the University of São Paulo (USP),

released in January 2014, shows that the tomato crop for indus-

trial processing in Brazil had an increase in cultivated area during

2013. In Goiás, which represents 70% of the total production,

there were 14 thousand hectares, 18.4% more that in 2012. The

expansion in the entire country was 12.6%. Even with investments

in the planting process, the yield dropped due to the attack of

pests to the crop. The main pest was the caterpillar Helicoverpa

armigera, known for eating everything in its path.

The executive director of the Brazilian Association of the Indus-

trial Tomato Production Chain (Abratop), Antônio Carlos Tadiotti,

believes that the agricultural production will drop between 15% to

17% in 2014. The climate problems (the year began with drought

in some regions) and the excess pests are said to be the primary

culprits. If in 2013 the problem was the Helicoverpa, in 2014 the

farmers need to fight the Lotarips adisi insect, also known as trips.

The commercial scenario is also more retracted. Tadiotti ex-

plained that there is product in inventory, which tends to reduce the

Brazilian import of tomatoes. According to the Cepea analysts, the

situation is a little different. They forecast that in 2014, the volume

from abroad will still be high, although less that the numbers seen

in 2013.

Data from the Secretary of Foreign Trade (secex), an agency of

the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, shows

that in 2013, 62,887 tons of processed tomato products were im-

ported, a 50.71% increase over 2012. The purchased volume cost

O tomate é um produto de muita

versatilidade. O fruto é usado em

saladas e molhos, e ainda serve

como importante ingrediente de

outras sofisticadas receitas culi-

evidenciadas.

diferentes necessidades dos apreciadores do vegetal. A BRS Za-

resistentes a importantes doenças do tomateiro.

A BRS Zamir é

um híbrido nutricionalmente enriquecido. O pesquisador Leonardo

IMIgRANTEThe decrease in crop yield due to disease prompted the

development of the BRS Imigrante variety. The salad variety hybrid contains a combination of genes that make it resistant to the species’ main diseases, including begomovirus, which

occurs throughout the country, and Fusarium oxysporum, caused by fungi and recorded in the states of Rio de Janeiro,

Bahia, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais.Research was carried out in protected cultivation areas

in the Federal District, Rio Grande do Sul and Espírito Santo. BRS Imigrante has an advantage over other materials on the

market in regions where both pathogens occur simultaneously. Research also shows that it is a medium-cycle cultivar with a

production potential of 12 kilograms per plant.

The tomato is a highly versatile product.

The fruit can be used in salads and

sauces and also serves as an impor-

tant ingredient in more sophisticated

cuisine. In order to cater to highly

demanding consumers and farmers,

genetic engineering researchers seek out varieties with more flavor,

resistance to disease and proven nutritional properties.

In early 2014, Embrapa Hortaliças, based in Brasília (the Federal

District), launched two new cultivars that cater to the different needs

of vegetable lovers. BRS Zamir, a grape tomato variety, is aimed at

the gourmet cuisine market and contains high levels of lycopene,

an efficient antioxidant. BRS Imigrante is a salad variety and was

developed using a combination of disease resistant genes.

Growing demand for grape tomatoes prompted the company

to embark on research in the segment. BRS Zamir is a nutritionally

enriched hybrid. Researcher Leonardo Boiteux highlights that the fruit

has high concentrations of lycopene. Studies indicate that the anti-

oxidant helps prevent degenerative and cardiovascular diseases as

well as some types of cancer, including ovarian and prostate cancer.

Another interesting feature of the Zamir variety is the balance

between sugar and acidic content, resulting in excellent taste and

sensory impact. The plant’s high productivity is another appealing

characteristic. It reaches eight kilograms per plant and has a post-

harvest durability of up to 15 days. Boiteux explains that the spe-

cies contains a gene that stimulates the bifurcation of bunches and

increases the number of fruits per cluster.

Desde outubro de 2012, as lagartas

do gênero Helicoverpa provocam

prejuízos significativos em várias

culturas agrícolas no Brasil.

tomate. Atualmente, está amplamente distribuída e pode atacar

hortaliças, como tomate, quiabo, pimentão, ervilha, feijão-vagem,

batata, melancia, alface, berinjela e milho-doce.

Distrito Federal”, salienta Michereff.

Since October 2012, the caterpillars of

the Helicoverpa genus caused sig-

nificant losses in various agricultural

crops in Brazil. A short while ago,

Helicoverpa zea was the main repre-

sentative of the Heliothinae subfami-

ly and a secondary horticultural pest. It primarily attacks the tip of

the corn ear, the cotton plant boll, and the tomato fruit; however,

without causing a productions loss, considering its effective action

against natural enemies.

In some situations, such as at the end of the corn or cotton

harvest, the pest would move from the old crops and the crop

remains to the vegetable crops, especially the tomato plant, caus-

ing the burrowing in fruit that is already in an advanced develop-

ment state. However, in 2013 the Helicoverpa armigera presence

in Brazil was confirmed.

STARVINgHelicoverpa armigera SPREADS AND bECOMES THE ENEMy Of THE VEgETAbLE fARMERS, CAUSINg LOSS IN SEVERAL PRODUCTION SySTEMS

According to the researcher Miguel Michereff Filho, a doctor of

Entomology at Embrapa Hortaliças, the first foci of this new pest

was recorded in the West of Bahia and in Goiás, with major infes-

tations in cotton, soy, beans, corn, and tomato crops. Currently, it

is widely distributed and can attack vegetables such as tomatoes,

okra, bell pepper, peas, green beans, potatoes, watermelon, let-

tuce, eggplant, and sweet-corn.

Depending on the vegetable, the pest can damage leaves,

stems, sprouts, flowers, fruits and pods. “Despite the absence

of official records, the losses in table tomato production (guided

culture) were very high in the 2012/13 harvest in Goiás, Minas

Gerais, and the Distrito Federal,” said Michereff. “In several situa-

tions, crops were found with 100% loss of fruit production. In this

type of activity, any damage to the fruit reduces the sale value.”

68

Page 71: HORTALICAS 2014 ANUARIO

OUT Of CONTROLThe farmers also reported a lot of difficulty with the control of the caterpillars, which could be attributed, in large part, to the lack of technical and

scientific information regarding appropriate handling of Helicoverpa armigera by about 80% of the farmers. Despite institutional efforts (agricultural research, rural technical assistance and teaching) at the state and federal level, the pest continued to cause losses in this agribusiness sector.

“Considerable losses also occurred in tomato crops for industrial processing in Goiás in the 2013/14 harvest. However, this segment was able to mobilize to avoid greater losses during the 2013/14 cycle,” said Miguel Michereff Filho, of Embrapa Hortaliças.

According to him, at the first outbreaks of the pest, the majority of the producers intensified the use of chemical synthetic insecticides, especially those with a broad action spectrum (organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticide). Along with that, there was

an increase in the applications in order to contain the infestation. This resulted in the immediate increase in the cost of production and a reduction on the farmer’s profits during the period when the insect was most prevalent.

Despite the measures taken, for most of the cases, especially the tomato culture, the effort did not reduce the infestation or the losses it caused. “Only with the correct identification of the target-species, i.e., Helicoverpa armigera, was it possible to trace strategies to control and use insecticides

in a more appropriate manner, using the philosophy of Integrated Pest Management (IPM),” said Michereff. “Currently, if the farmer follows the technical recommendations, the pest can be efficiently controlled, without the indiscriminate use of insecticides, and with the guarantee of better

quality foods,” he said. Therefore, monitoring the crops and identifying the presence of the insect at the control level is essential.

Monitoring and control are fundamental to battle the pest

O descuido SAI CAROfALTA DE INSETICIDAS REgISTRADOS PARA HORTALIÇAS é UM gARgALO NO COMbATE àS LAgARTAS, MAS HÁ OUTROS MECANISMOS QUE PERMITEM CONTROLAR A PRAgA

A voracidade da Helicoverpa armige-

ra preocupa os horticultores, mas

acossa principalmente a cadeia pro-

dutiva do tomateiro, em seus diferen-

tes segmentos: tomate tutorado para

mesa, tomate rasteiro para proces-

samento industrial e produção orgânica. Ela se mostra muito mais

agressiva do que a Helicoverpa zea (lagarta-da-espiga do milho)

e as lagartas do complexo Spodoptera (lagarta militar), é polífaga

agrotóxicos, e ainda associado a condições climáticas favoráveis

The voracity of the Helicoverpa armi-

gera worries vegetable farmers, but

primarily besets the production chain

of the tomato plant, in its different

segments: guided table tomatoes,

sprawling tomatoes for industrial pro-

cessing and organic production. It is much more aggressive than

the Helicoverpa zea (corn ear caterpillar) and the caterpillars of the

Spodoptera complex (military caterpillar), is polyphagous (feeds off

of several species of wild and cultivated vegetables), can adapt to

different environmental conditions, and is not easily controlled with

synthetic chemical insecticides.

According to the researcher Miguel Michereff Filho, doctor of

Entomology at Embrapa Hortaliças (DF), the difference between

Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa zea, based on both the

adult moths as well as the caterpillars, is very had to see with the

naked eye, and requires knowledge of their reproductive struc-

tures to confirm the species. “The use of molecular biology tools is

Carelessnessis EXPENSIVEA LACk Of APPROVED INSECTICIDES fOR VEgETAbLES IS A bOTTLENECk IN THE bATTLE AgAINST CATERPILLARS, bUT THERE ARE OTHER MECHANISMS THAT CAN bE USED TO CONTROL THIS PEST

essential for this task,” he said.

The scientist believes that the increase in populations of this

genus of caterpillar and the resulting harm to the farming system

was caused by an accumulation of inappropriate handling practic-

es. The planting of successive species of host vegetables (corn, soy,

and cotton) in very large continuous areas, as well as inappropriate

handling, with the abusive use of insecticides, and also associated

to the climate conditions that are favorable to the spread of insects,

are among the main causes of the ecological imbalance. “This may

occur in various regions in Brazil, where the pest has concerned

farmers and the technical consultants,” said the specialist.

72

Page 75: HORTALICAS 2014 ANUARIO

NO APPROVALIn Brazil, there are no approved insecticides for battling Helicoverpa armigera in vegetable areas, which makes living with

and handling the pest even more critical in regard to the next harvest. Despite this, there is a major expectation for technological development in the area of biological control, involving the use of the wasp egg parasites Trichogramma spp., of biological

insecticides based on the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria (products with a mixture of subspecies kurstaki and azawai), or based on a caterpillar killing virus, which will be able to be used both in conventional and organic production.

“Therefore, the use of selective insecticides for the natural enemies will be essential to the success of the pest control,” said researcher Miguel Michereff Filho. Another major reinforcement for the implementation of control tactics is the monitoring of adult

Helicoverpa armigera (male moths), by using the traps baited with the synthetic sexual pheromone, as of yet not approved in Brazil. The new technology tends to reduce the difficulties found by producers with the use of light traps, due to energy sources in the field,

the influence of the full non in attracting the moths, and the confusing n identifying the peeled insects. It will allow control measures such as chemical insecticides, biological measures, and egg parasitoids to be used as a more effective means of controlling the pest.

In Michereff’s opinion, technical solutions exist and the problem generated by Helicoverpa armigera in Brazilian agriculture can be resolved in the next several years. “But for that, there need to be an effort made by the entire society,” he said.

A trivial salada de alface, comum na

mesa dos brasileiros, ganhará sta-

tus de alimento nutracêutico. Isto

ticos.

POSSIbILITIESThe researcher Francisco Aragão, responsible for the

project at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, highlights that the tests made with the new variety were

successful, with the same agronomic performance as the traditional plants. And greater folic acid concentration is just the first of several other neutraceutical possibilities

that biotechnology can add to lettuce. Other similar studies related to lettuce are already being developed

in the laboratory. One seeks to facilitate the diagnosis of dengue fever, a disease that affects every region in Brazil,

transmitted by the Aëdes aegypti mosquito.

The basic lettuce salad, so common

on Brazilian dinner tables, will receive

nutraceutical status. That means that,

besides feeding, it will provide health

benefits such as disease prevention.

The laboratories of Embrapa Genetic

Resources and Biotechnology developed a genetically modified

variety that can prevent fetal birth defects caused by a lack of folic

acid. The technology is being authorized by the biosafety agen-

cies for field validation by Embrapa Hortaliças.

The expectation is that, once all of the legal and technical steps

are completed – which will serve as the genetic basis in crosses

with other crops – it will arrive in the market in up to five years. The

variety has a 15 times greater concentration of folic acid than the

conventional: two leaves meet the daily needs of an adult. Cur-

rently, folic acid is added to wheat flour, but the mixture is not al-

ways homogeneous.

To reach this new characteristic, the lettuce received a gene

from Arabidopsis thaliana, a plant used in genetic crossing. The

purpose of the gene is to elevate the natural production of folic

acid in the lettuce. Present is dark green vegetables, such as broc-

coli and spinach, the substance (a form of vitamin B) collaborates

with cellular multiplication processes such a fetal development.

Therefore, the folic acid supplements are recommended for two

months before conception until the end of the pregnancy.

According to data from the Biotechnology Information Board

(CIB), this practice can prevent 50% of the deformity cases, which

in Brazil affects 1.6 babies out of every thousand born alive. An-

encephaly, the accumulation of amniotic liquid on the brain, one

of the most severe defects, happens in 0.6 babies per thousand

born alive.

ESCOLHA automatizadaINSTITUTO AgRONôMICO DE CAMPINAS ESTÁ AVALIANDO A POSSIbILIDADE DO APROVEITAMENTO DE IMAgENS DIgITAIS NA SELEÇãO DE fRUTAS E DE HORTALIÇAS

Loureiro Lino, também pesquisador do IAC, Juliana é coordena-

dora do programa.

“Porém, a implementação tec-

consideração tamanho, forma, massa, firmeza, cor e danos.

Automatic CHOICETHE CAMPINAS AgRONOMy INSTITUTE IS EVALUATINg THE POSSIbILITy Of USINg DIgITAL IMAgINg TO SELECT fRUIT AND VEgETAbLES

Manual selection and grading of

fruits and vegetables could be-

come a thing of the past within

a few short years. In addition,

some fruits and vegetables are

also classified according to size

by electronic sorters using weight as reference. The latest develo-

pment is that all these activities could potentially be carried out by

machines, with greater accuracy.

The Campinas Agronomy Institute (IAC) in São Paulo is develop-

ing a program entitled “Use of Digital Imaging to Select and Clas-

sify Fruits and Vegetables”. “We are currently developing selection

methodologies and the next step will be to test these on sorting

tables”, reports Juliana Sanches, a researcher with IAC, an institu-

tion that forms part of the Department of Agriculture and Supply for

the State of São Paulo. Juliana coordinates the program alongside

Antônio Carlos Loureiro Lino, another IAC researcher.

One of the study’s priorities is to ensure these methods are low

cost. “The aim of the study is to adapt open-source software to

allow the system to select and sort by recognizing shape, size, vol-

ume, color and mechanical and/or physiological damage”, explains

Juliana. She adds that some companies in the country already offer

image technology for selecting and sorting fruit and vegetables on

produce such as guavas and tomatoes. However, the cost of sort-

ing machines that offer this technology is very high. “Only some of

the major farmers and exporters are purchasing them”, she says.

IMPROVED SAfETyVegetable farming requires high quality standards in response

to cultural changes in the eating habits of consumers. Vegetable quality generally includes size, shape, mass, firmness, color and

damage. “Vegetable produce is selected and sorted based on these characteristics”, reports Juliana Sanches, a researcher at the

Campinas Agronomy Institute (IAC). “As a result, the phase dedicated to selection and sorting

produce deserves greater attention”, she says. First, because it is traditionally a manual task, and second because the domestic

market is seeking to professionalize the vegetable trade. As such, growing demand for fruit graded according to quality and

inconsistency in the process as a result of human decision-making have prompted interest in post-harvest automation.

According to Juliana, non-destructive and objective sorting and characterization systems are under development using electronic sensors and devices to meet these market demands. “One of the

techniques studied in the agricultural sector is machine vision, which promotes objectivity in sorting produce”, she points out.

According to the researcher, acquiring the images requires a ma-

chine vision system, generally consisting of five components: lighting,

camera, image capturing card (scanner), computer hardware devices

and computer programs. Thus, machine vision is recognized as the

integrated use of optical sensing devices, without direct contact with

the object under study, since procedures to receive and interpret im-

ages of real scenes are carried out automatically. “Implementing tech-

nology in this sector becomes unviable because of the high cost of

software and equipment, in addition to operating costs”, she says.

Cuidado, fRÁgILESTUDOS APONTAM QUE AS PERDAS NO SETOR HORTíCOLA bRASILEIRO PODEM CHEgAR A 40%, VOLUME SUfICIENTE PARA ALIMENTAR 29,3% DA POPULAÇãO

destaca Juliana Sanches, pesquisadora do Instituto Agronômico

dora.

10%. Porém, no manuseio e no transporte, o desperdício alcança

esclarece Juliana.

Conforme a pesquisadora, produtores, distribuidores e co-

merciantes precisam adotar alguns cuidados mínimos a fim de

manter a integridade dos produtos. Um deles é manusear as hor-

taliças de maneira adequada e cuidadosa. Além disso, devem

manter limpos e higienizados máquinas, mesas classificadoras e

80

Page 83: HORTALICAS 2014 ANUARIO

stantial losses recorded throughout

the process, from production to the

home of consumers. “Studies indi-

cate that, in Brazil, average losses in

the post-harvest period are around 35% and can reach up to 40%”,

says Juliana Sanches, a researcher at the Campinas Agronomy

Institute (IAC), associated with the Department of Agriculture and

Supply for the State of São Paulo. In countries such as the United

States, losses are estimated at up to 10%.

“The substantial amount lost is enough to supply 29.3% of the

Brazilian population”, calculates the researcher. Losses in the field

are lower and reach up to 10%. However, during handling and

transport wastage can climb to 50%. “In the post-harvest phase

the quality of vegetables that come from the field cannot be im-

proved but it can be preserved for as long as possible, until its final

consumption”, explains Juliana.

According to the researcher, farmers, distributors and retailers

need to adopt certain minimum measure to ensure the integrity of

products. One of these is to ensure proper and careful handling of

vegetables. In addition, the machinery, sorting tables and other equip-

ment used in harvesting and the packing house must be kept clean.

Ideally, packing houses should be in close proximity to production

settings, covered, easily accessible and have water and electricity.

Once harvested, vegetables need to be selected and graded.

They must also be adequately packaged to prevent mechanical

damage and immediately stored, preferably refrigerated. “Once re-

frigerated they must remain so until they reach consumer homes”,

she emphasizes.

MININS UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Post-harvest technologies aimed at extending the shelf life of leafy vegetables known as baby-leaf

greens are the most sought-after at the Campinas Agronomy Institute (IAC). “Recently, innovations are also being requested in terms of mini vegetables”,

adds Juliana Sanches, a researcher at the institute. Projects along these lines are currently underway or in

discussion by the institute’s researchers.

TIME fOR A CHANgEFood losses have generally been viewed as a problem in poor countries,

primarily due to insufficient infrastructure. In the case of vegetables, these losses were compounded because of their perishable nature. Yet now, losses due to wastage are also a concern in wealthy countries like the United States. “The issue has become increasingly important given growing population numbers, greater demand for food stuffs, less availability of natural resources and environmental issues”, reports Milza Moreira Lana, a researcher at Embrapa Hortaliças in Gama (the Federal District).

According to Lana, in underprivileged countries losses occur from planting until the product reaches consumer homes. However, in wealthy countries wastage is more pronounced at retail outlets and in consumer homes. Lana feels that the domestic sector needs to change how it works in cultivation. As an example she points out that fruits and vegetables are still frequently damaged during handling. “Knowledge on the correct procedures exists, is straightforward and is being passed on to the production chain as a whole”, she emphasizes.

Novidade NA RAIzAMANCO ESTÁ LANÇANDO NO bRASIL UMA fITA gOTEjADORA COM 95% DE APROVEITAMENTO DE ÁgUA, RESISTENTE AO SOL E CAPAz DE SUPORTAR TRAÇõES

Um novo produto para a irrigação

por gotejamento está sendo lança-

do no Brasil em maio de 2014 pela

Amanco, marca comercial da Me-

xichem, empresa líder mundial em

tubos e conexões. A Amanco Drip

A new drip irrigation product is being

launched in Brazil in May 2014 by

Amanco, the trade name for Mex-

ichem, a global leader in tubes and

connections. Amanco Drip Tape is

recommended for use in plantations

of fruits and vegetables in general as well as forestry. The product,

similar to a tube, has several versions in six widths and nine spac-

ings. The equipment keeps the soil moist only at the root of the

plant, which favors the development and keeps the plantation from

acquiring diseases from the excess or lack of water.

Amanco Drip Tape is produced with thermoplastic resin with

high mechanical resistance with an additive to resist ultraviolet light.

The drip irrigation method provides more control for the inline and

quick cycle process. Since it is sold in coils, it is easy to apply and

transport. The malleable material allows for curves in the plantation.

The farmer can choose to use the manual or automatic handling,

both with great performance.

The major differential of the drip tape, in comparison to similar

equipment, is the water usage, which reaches 95% efficiency. In

other options in has, at most, 80% of the water reaching the plant,

and not always at the root. The product can also be used to fertilize

plantations, because its thin wall reduces the risk of blockage.

Brazil has the machinery and the technology to manufacture the

drip tape and will export the product to the subsidiaries of the Mex-

ichem in Latin American countries.

among other cultures. Each model has several options for nozzles, and can be

adapted for different plantations. Among the highlights of the product are the uniform

distribution of water and the recommended spacing, which contribute to the healthy development of the plantation.

Also, get to know Amanco Irrigafort, the brand’s first PVC tube, developed especially for high pressure in the irrigation segment. Not only is it strong and light, which

makes transportation and installation easier, but the production process of the tube consumes less energy in comparison to other market solutions for the same

application, making it more sustainable.

EVENTOS Events

as cadeias produtivas buscarem aper-

cultura, Cultivo Protegido e Culturas Intensivas.

A demanda é alta no Sul do

If the consumption of vegetables becomes more

and more synonymous with balanced health, it

is also true that the demand is growing. There-

fore, it becomes even more necessary for the

production chains to seek improvement. Among

the major opportunities to optimize production,

harvest, post-harvest, transportation, preservation, and the sale

of vegetables, while adding knowledge, experience, and tech-

nology, are the sectorial events.

In 2014, there are countless options for interaction and learn-

ing. At the end of May, from the 28th to the 30th, one of the most

important tradeshows for horticultural technology will be held in

Holambra (SP): Hortitec – Technical Expo for Horticulture, Pro-

tected and Intensive Crops. It is expected to attract thousands of

farmers and market players involved in these segments. In July,

another major even is scheduled to happen in Palmas, Tocan-

tins: the 53rd Brazilian Horticulture Congress, which is held July

28th thru August 1st.

According to Professor Valéria Momenté, the president of the

executive committee for the 53rd Congress, “the event’s major

objectives are to share the results of research related to veg-

etable production, and also to gather the teaching, research,

technical assistance, rural extension, and agribusiness profes-

sionals, that share horticulture and medicinal plants as a com-

mon interest.” With this focus, there will be lectures, roundtables,

and discussion forums, and there will be presentations of scien-

tific papers from researchers, farmers, and undergraduate and

graduate academics from every region of the country.

Later, from September 18th-19th, in Florianópolis (SC), will be

the 9th Brazilian Hydroponics Meeting and the 1st Brazilian Hy-

droponics Symposium, geared to the sharing of one of the tech-

niques that has most spread among Brazilian horticulture. The

demand is high in the South of Brazil, especially since it is a region

affected by climate problems, and invests heavily in protected en-

vironments.

From November 26th-28th, one of the largest events in Bra-

zilian horticulture is scheduled to be held in Goiânia (GO). It is the

7th Brazilian Congress of Industrial Tomatoes, which will address

the entire production chain, link by link, its strengthening, bottle-

necks, and demands in search for greater competitiveness. The

event includes the 2nd Tomato Show, with market lectures, mo-

tivational speeches, music concerts, dinning, and other attrac-

tions. The schedule with the main Brazilian horticultural events in

2014 can be seen on the next page.
