LA CITADELLEPrécoce exemple de fortification bastionnée, laCitadelle de Villefranche-sur-Mer est construite àpartir de 1554 sur des plans de Gian Maria Olgiattiingénieur italien à la solde de Charles Quint. Au XVème siècle les ingénieurs se trouvent obligésd'imaginer une parade à l'évolution de l'artillerie.Après de nombreux tâtonnements, ils élaborent unnouveau type de fortification reposant sur deuxgrands principes : le rempart rempli de terre et le tracé bastionné sans angle mort.Deux principes qui s'illustrent parfaitement dans la Citadelle et le Mont Alban. LaCitadelle a été construite pour prévenir tout assaut venant de la mer car en 1543 c'estla guerre sur notre rivage, les 110 galères de Barberousse débarquent à Villefranche,razziant, brûlant et dévastant tout sur leur passage. Depuis le rattachement de laSavoie à la France en 1860, la Citadelle a servi de cantonnement militaire au 24èmeBataillon des Chasseurs Alpins. En 1965, le conseil municipal en place rachète laCitadelle. Sa restauration est entreprise en 1979. En 1981, le conseil municipal décided’y installer l'Hôtel de ville et un centre culturel (Musées, Auditorium, Théâtre deVerdure). Adresse: Place Philibert. Inscrit aux Monuments Historiques en 1968.Early example of a bastioned fortification, the Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer wasbuilt from 1554 on plans of Gian Maria Olgiatti, an Italian engineer in the pay of CharlesQuint. In the 15th century the engineers found themselves forced to imagine a thrustin the development of artillery. After much trial and error, they developed a new typeof fortification based on two major principles: the rampart filled with soil and thebastioned layout without blind corners, two principles that are perfectly illustratedin the Citadel and at Mont Alban. The Citadel was built to prevent any attack comingfrom the sea as, in 1543, with war along the coast, Barbarossa's 110 galleys landedat Villefranche, where his forces raided, burnt and destroyed everything in their path.Since the annexation of Savoy to France in 1860, the Citadel served as military canton-ment at the 24th Battalion of the Alpine Hunters. In 1965, the existing city councilbought the Citadel. Its restoration was undertaken in 1979. In 1981, the city councildecided to install the Town Hall and a cultural center (Museums, Auditorium, Theater"de Verdure"). Addresse: Philibert Square. LE MUSÉE GOETZ-BOUMEESTERCette donation d’Henri Goetz occupe tout l’étage del’ancien « Bâtiment du Casernement ». Dans cemusée sont exposées une cinquantaine d’oeuvresde Christine Boumeester et à peu près autantd’Henri Goetz mais également quelques oeuvressouvenir de grands maîtres contemporains que lesépoux ont côtoyés ou fréquentés (PICASSO,PICABIA, MIRO, HARTUNG). LA CHAPELLE SAINT PIERRE "COCTEAU"Cette chapelle de style roman (XIVème siècle) estdédiée à Saint Pierre, patron des pêcheurs. Lieu deculte à son début, elle sert alors de réserve pourle matériel de pêche (filets etc). Elle abrite aussi laprud’homie des pêcheurs. En 1957, après de nom-breux séjours à l’hôtel Welcome, Jean Cocteaudécide, avec l’accord des pêcheurs, de redécorer,en signe d’amitié, la chapelle. On peut y découvriraujourd'hui des passages de la vie de St Pierre (patron des pêcheurs), les chandeliersde l’apocalypse (cuits dans les fours de Valbonne), des scènes locales (hommagesaux Saintes Maries de la Mer et aux Demoiselles de Villefranche). Quai Courbet.Inscrite aux Monuments Historiques en 1996.This romanesque-style chapel (14th century) is dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saintof fishermen. Elle fut bâtie sur les anciens remparts duXIVème siècle. Son nom actuel provient de l'antiquechapelle qui devint le siège des sœurs humiliéesde Sainte Elisabeth. Rue de L'Église. L' EGLISE SAINT MICHELL’édifice fut construit au XVIII ème siècle (1757).Messe le dimanche à 10h00 Située au cœur de laville, l'église St Michel présente tous les traits d’unstyle baroque dépouillé. Elle renferme de nom-breuses richesses : Les orgues des Frères Grinda(restaurées en 1982, classées monuments his-toriques en 1990) comptent parmi les plus anci-ennes des Alpes-Maritimes (1790). Au fond duchœur, un grand tableau représente le Saint Patron, Saint Michel. Un Christ gisant,grandeur nature, sculpté dans une seule pièce de bois de figuier, au visage empreintde sérénité, témoigne selon la légende de la foi ardente d’un galérien inconnu. LA RUE OBSCURELa Rue Obscure est un lieu magique qui vous rep-longe dans l'atmosphère du Villefranche médiéval.Située le long du premier rempart, la rue Obscure(XIVème siècle) était au début non couverte et con-stituait la continuité du chemin de ronde défensif.Elle permettait la circulation des militaires etfacilitait les manœuvres. Elle est longue de 130m.Quatre portes permettaient l’accès à la cité, dontune est toujours visible : le Portal Robert . Par la suite, elle fit l’objet d’une urbanisa-tion peu régulière pour combler le manque d’habitations se situant à la rue du Poilu.Elle est inscrite aux Monuments Historiques en 1932. LE PORT ROYAL DE LA DARSELe port naturel est fortifié dès 1550 par les Ducsde Savoie. En 1713, ils portent désormais le titrede Rois de Sardaigne, la Darse devient alors « PortRoyal ». A partir de 1730 commencent les grandstravaux : construction du phare, du bassin deraboub, de l'arsenal et de la forge. Puis dès 1770,on y ajoute le bagne, la corderie et la caserne desofficiers. Aujourd'hui, c'est un port de plaisance quia su garder l'héritage de son histoire. Depuis février 1990, le Port Royal de la Darseest inscrit à l'inventaire des Monuments Historiques.The natural port was fortified in 1550 by the Dukes of Savoy. In 1713 onwards theycarried the title King of Sardinia and the Darse thus became a "Royal Port". Le Combat Naval Fleuri Chaque année en février, le Combat Naval Fleuri, ravit petits et grands par son originalité.Véritable Bataille de fleurs sur l’eau, cette manifestation fait partie du programme du Carnaval de Nice.Au programme : parades, fanfares et en point d’orgue, les vingt "pointus" (barques traditionnelles) entièrement ornés de fleurs qui affrontent le public par des lancés d’œillets et de mimosa. Le Combat Naval Fleuri est la fête traditionnelle la plus emblématique de la ville puisqu'elle existe depuis 1902.
