APRESENTAÇÃO | INTRODUCTION

Brasília é uma cidade diferente em tudo. O traçado urbanístico permite ao visitante apreciar o bonito azul do céu, desfrutar a luminosidade natural e a linha do horizonte, sempre ao alcance dos olhos. A arquitetura, única no mundo, faz da cidade o maior acervo a céu aberto da arquitetura moderna. Os amplos jardins e milhares de árvores plantadas respondem pelo lado bucólico, mistura do verde salpicado de flores entre monumentos. Ruas largas, trânsito ordenado, motoristas educados que param nas faixas para dar preferência ao pedestre. Aqui, tudo obedece a uma lógica original e fácil de entender, embora possa parecer estranho num primeiro contato morar em quadras, superquadras, trabalhar nesse ou naquele setor, fazer compras em ruas comerciais.

Brasília is quite a unique city in every detail. The urban design allows visitors to appreciate the beautiful blue sky, enjoy the natural brilliance and the skyline, always within the reach of eyesight. The architecture, of which there is only one of its kind in the world, makes the city the largest modern architecture outdoor collection. The huge gardens and thousands of planted trees bring about a bucolic feeling, mixture of green seasoned with flowers stringing the monuments. Built in one thousand days, in the heart of the Mid Plateau, a work of courage and determination by President Juscelino Kubitschek, Brasília was inaugurated on 21 April 1960, and is thus close to celebrating its �7th anniversary and has shown signs that it has reached maturity. A cidade nasceu de duas linhas que se cruzam, formando eixos — o rodoviário e o monumental —, ao longo dos quais distribuem-se os monumentos criados por Oscar Niemeyer para dar destaque ao plano urbanístico de Lúcio Costa. Considerada a mais moderna cidade do mundo, Brasília é fruto do sonho do presidente JK, um homem que soube interpretar o futuro. O Lago Paranoá tinha a função inicial de imprimir graça e beleza ao projeto. Hoje, é muito mais do que isso: virou pólo econômico e cenário para eventos esportivos.

Brasília é dona da terceira maior frota de barcos do País, com mais de 6 mil embarcações registradas. Estações do ano bem marcadas, livres de chuvas por um longo período do ano, favorecem a prática de vôo livre, de ultraleve e de asa-delta e pára-quedismo, entre outros esportes que dependem da estabilidade do tempo. É também o terceiro pólo gastronômico do País, com centenas de bares e restaurantes que apostam na qualidade para atender do mais simples ao mais sofisticado paladar. The city originated from two intersecting lines – the roadway and the monumental – thus forming an axis along which there are a distribution of monuments created by Oscar Niemeyer to emphasize Lúcio Costa’s urban plan. As quatro escalas de Brasília

The inclusion of Brasilia’s Pilot Plan on the list of assets considered World Heritage Site by Unesco was based on the originality of the urban plan, structured in four scales: monumental, gregarious, residential and bucolic.

A escala monumental é representada pelo Eixo Monumental, onde estão dispostos os símbolos do poder político do País.

A escala gregária corresponde a todos os setores de convergência da população (comerciais, bancário e hospitalar, por exemplo) e tem como marco a plataforma da Rodoviária do Plano Piloto, símbolo da união com as outras cidades do Distrito Federal.

A escala residencial é representada pelas superquadras e seus conjuntos de edifícios sobre pilotis, para garantir a livre circulação de pessoas pelo chão.

A escala bucólica permeia-se com as demais: são os gramados, as praças, os jardins, as áreas de lazer, o Parque da Cidade e a orla do Lago Paranoá.

The four scales of Brasília

The inclusion of Brasilia’s Pilot Plan on the list of assets considered World Humanity Heritage by Unesco was based on the originality of the urban plan, structured in four scales: monumental, gregarious, residential and bucolic.

The monumental scale is represented by the Monumental Axis, where the symbols of the Country’s government power are exhibited.

The gregarious scale corresponds to all sectors where the population gathers (for example, commerce, bank and hospital), and its highlight is the Pilot Plan Highway platform, symbol of union with other Federal District cities.

The residential scale is represented by the giant blocks and their sets of buildings on supporting pillars, to assure free pedestrian circulation on ground.

The bucolic scale includes the three others: there are lawns, squares, leisure areas, the City Park and the Paranoá Lake shore.

QUAlIDADE DE VIDA QUAlITY OF lIFE

O DF ocupa o topo do ranking no relatório das Nações Unidas sobre o Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH), com 0,8�9 (sendo de 0,9�6 em Brasília), o que corresponde ao mais alto índice do Brasil e equivale a quatro vezes o porcentual exigido pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS).

Pertence ao DF a maior renda per capita do País, que chega a atingir o dobro da média brasileira. Por isso, Brasília desponta como a quarta cidade brasileira entre as de maior poder de consumo.

No que tange à educação, o Distrito Federal é dono do menor índice de analfabetismo do País e do maior índice de escolaridade entre os jovens. E conta com mais de �60 academias de ginástica, que, juntas, somam cerca de 120 mil freqüentadores.

The Federal District is the highest ranked in United Nations reports on Human Development Index (IDH), with 0.8�9 (0.9�6 in Brasilia), which corresponds to the highest index in Brazil and is equivalent to four times the percentage required by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The highest per capita income of Brazil exists in the Federal District, reaching double the Brazilian average. Therefore, Brasilia emerges as the fourth Brazilian city among those with the highest purchasing power.

With respect to education, the Federal District has the lowest illiteracy level in Brazil and the highest index of schooling among youth. There are more than �60 gyms, which jointly total 120 thousand members.

HOTElARIA HOTEl InDUSTRY

A cidade conta com uma rede hoteleira de qualidade, composta por hotéis administrados por bandeiras nacionais e internacionais. O Plano Piloto dispõe de �7 hotéis, que, juntos, perfazem 8.700 apartamentos, ou seja, 18 mil unidades hoteleiras (leitos); e ocupam uma área construída de 900 mil metros quadrados. O patrimônio imobiliário é estimado em R$ 1,2 bilhão. São hotéis cuja classificação varia de duas a cinco estrelas, faturamento anual na casa dos R$ 26� milhões, o que dá pouco mais de R$ 20 milhões/mês, e uma contribuição anual de ISS da ordem de R$ 20 milhões. Juntos, esses �7 hotéis geram �.�00 empregos diretos e �� mil empregos indiretos.

Nos últimos três anos, a rede hoteleira dobrou sua capacidade instalada: passou de 4.603 apartamentos para 8.718. A previsão é de que mais seis novos hotéis ou flats sejam instalados ainda no Plano Piloto no próximo triênio. O parque hoteleiro do DF nas cidades (ex-satélites) e setores mais afastados do Plano Piloto soma outros �� hotéis, que respondem por mais 12 mil leitos. Juntando-se ainda os motéis, clubes com serviço de hospedagem, áreas de treinamento, camping, pensões, albergues e outros, chega-se a �00 estabelecimentos

The city posses a quality hotel network, consisting of hotels managed by national and international institutions. The Pilot Plan has �7 hotels, which, jointly, add to a total of 8,700 apartments, i.e., 18 thousand hotel units (berths), occupying a constructed area of 900 thousand square meters. The real estate assets are estimated at R$ 1.2 billion. These are hotels, whose rating ranges from two to five stars, annual invoicing of about R$ 26� million, which is just a little more than R$ 20 million/month, and an annual Service Tax (ISS) of R$ 20 million. These �7 hotels jointly generate �,�00 direct jobs and �� thousand indirect jobs.

In the last three years, the hotel network doubled its installed capacity, rising from �,60� apartments to 8,718. The estimate is that more than six new hotels or flat-hotels will still be installed in the Pilot Plan in the next three years. The Federal District’s hotel complex in the cities (former satellites) and more removed sectors of the Pilot Plan adds another �� hotels, which account for 12 thousand more berths. Adding the motels, clubs with lodging accommodations, training areas, camping grounds, boarding houses, hostels and others, the total reaches �00 establishments.

Brasília conta com um Grupamento Especializado de Policiamento Turístico (GPTur). Integrado por policiais treinados, todos fluentes em pelo menos um idioma estrangeiro, encarregados do policiamento nos pontos turísticos da cidade. Deles, 80% já concluíram um curso superior e passaram em um curso de formação específica para lidar com turistas. Alguns dominam três ou mais dos idiomas mais falados no mundo: inglês, francês, espanhol, italiano, russo, hebraico e até um que fala mandarim, dialeto oficial da China. Eles também dão apoio e orientação às pessoas que visitam Brasília.

Brasilia relies on a Specialized Tourism Police Grouping (GPTur). More than 70 policemen, all fluent in at least one foreign language, are in charge of policing the city’s tourist spots. Some 80% of them have already completed a higher specific education level in order to address tourists. Some are fluent in three or more of the most spoken foreign languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Hebrew and even one who speaks Mandarin, the official Chinese dialect. They also support and guide Brasilia’s visitors.

Brasília dispõe de auditórios, clubes sociais, estádios, ginásios de esportes, salas e espaços em hotéis, business centers, salões de festas, salas de espetáculos e mansões para eventos sociais, o que perfaz um total de �60 espaços disponíveis. Pela qualidade das instalações, o Parque de Exposições da Granja do Torto tem sido muito requisitado para grandes eventos, notadamente feiras agropecuárias e rodeios.

Brasilia has auditoriums, social clubs, stadiums, sports gymnasiums, hotel rooms and salons, business centers, rooms for festive events, rooms for shows, and mansions for social events, which total �60 available spaces. Due to the quality of their facilities, the Granja do Torto Exhibitions Park has had a large demand for big events, especially agriculture and livestock shows and rodeos.

Gerenciado pela Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Turismo do GDF, o Centro de Convenções Ulysses Guimarães (CCUG) foi projetado pelo arquiteto Sérgio Bernardes, reformado, ampliado e parcialmente inaugurado em 200�. O novo centro propiciou o crescimento do turismo de eventos em Brasília. Ocupa área total de �� mil metros quadrados, com capacidade para receber 9,� mil pessoas e é subdividido em alas. A Ala Sul, climatizada, é destinada à montagem de exposições e feiras com 10,2 mil metros quadrados.

A Ala Oeste, com um vão livre de 2 mil metros quadrados no térreo e quatro auditórios, oferece múltiplas funções, como exibições de teatro e de cinema. Na Ala Norte, há o Auditório Máster, com capacidade para � mil pessoas, 1� salas moduláveis, área multiuso, camarins, sala VIP e sala de imprensa.

Managed by the Economic and Tourism Development Office of the GDF, the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center (CCUG) was designed by architect Sérgio Bernardes, renovated, expanded and partially inaugurated in 200�. The new center stimulated the growth of tourism events in Brasilia. It occupies a total area of �� square meters (6�.8 square yards), with a capacity to receive a public of 9.� thousand and is subdivided into wings. The acclimatized South Wing is reserved for the assembly of exhibitions and trade fairs in a space of 10.2 thousand square meters [12.2� thousand square yards].

The West Wing, with 2 square meters of space (2.� square yards) on the ground floor and four auditoriums, has multiple functions, such as theater and cinema exhibitions.

Este auditório, com três modelos de poltronas ergonômicas, foi ainda adaptado para receber portadores de necessidades especiais (com rampas, elevadores, telefones e sanitários apropriados). Possui equipamento de som com tecnologia de ponta e cabeamento para instalação de audiovisual embutida. A Ala Norte dispõe, ainda, de sistema que potencializa os sinais de telefonia móvel e ar-condicionado central, com controle setorizado independente.

O CCUG está próximo de uma rede hoteleira que oferece diversas categorias de acomodações, num total de 18 mil leitos — e a 1� minutos do Aeroporto Juscelino Kubitschek, dono do segundo maior movimento de passageiros do país, com 162 vôos diários, sendo porta de entrada para o Pantanal e a Amazônia.

O partido arquitetônico do Centro de Convenções satisfaz a exigências de múltiplos programas e propõe novos desafios com idéias inovadoras — o turismo voltado para o aperfeiçoamento, bem como a geração de emprego e renda. Brasília oferece ao turista a possibilidade de diálogo com a arquitetura moderna, o poder cívico e os aspectos míticos. E, por todas as suas peculiaridades, vem consolidando-se como a capital brasileira do turismo de eventos — especialmente depois da reinauguração do centro de convenções.

The North Wing is equipped with the Master Auditorium, having capacity for � thousand people, 1� rooms that can be shifted by modules, a multiuse area, VIP room and Pressroom. This auditorium, with three different models of ergonomic chairs, was further adapted to receive handicapped persons (with ramps, elevators, telephones and appropriate Bath and Rest rooms). It has cutting edge technology sound equipment and cabling for installing fitted audiovisual equipment. Moreover, the North Wing provides a system that potentializes mobile telephony signals and central air-conditioning, with independent control by sector. The CCUG is near a hotel network that offers several categories of accommodation, making up a total of 18 thousand berths – and located 1� minutes from the Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport, the second busiest airport in Brazil, with 162 daily flights, a literal gateway to the Pantanal and Amazônia.

The architectonic formal consequence of the Convention Center meets the requirements of multiple programs and proposes new challenges with innovative ideas – tourism focused on perfection, , as well as the generation of employment and income. Brasilia offers tourists the opportunity to dialogue with modern architecture, civic power and mythical aspects. Thus, with all its peculiarities, it has been consolidating as the Brazilian capital of tourism events– especially after the reinauguration of the convention center.

Brasilia has the vitality of a young city. To truly enjoy the excellence of the city requires a bit of wisdom from visitors. Os mais importantes monumentos de Brasília foram erguidos no Eixo Monumental, com destaque para a Praça dos Três Poderes, tendo como centro a Estação Rodoviária. Impossível, porém, não incluir no circuito um ou outro ponto mais distante, seja por causa de sua história ou porque são muito visitados, como o Templo da Boa Vontade, a Feira dos Importados, a sede do Ministério Público, do Superior Tribunal de Justiça e a Ponte JK, premiada internacionalmente como a ponte mais bonita do mundo, um novíssimo point da cidade.

Conhecimento básico para quem chega são algumas designações características da cidade. Candango é o operário que construiu Brasília, vindo de todos os cantos do País, figura imortalizada na escultura de 8 metros de altura denominada Os candangos, de autoria de Bruno Giorgio. Está em frente do parlatório do Palácio do Planalto, na Praça dos Três Poderes. O observador atento perceberá um detalhe que faz parte do cotidiano dos pioneiros e moradores de Brasília: a falta de fiação elétrica nas ruas, toda subterrânea, pelo menos nos principais logradouros. Pioneiro é quem chegou nos primeiros anos após a inauguração.

The most important monuments in Brasilia were erected on the Monumental Axis, emphasizing Três Poderes Square with the Bus Station at the center. However, one must not fail to include on the tour other more distant points, whether due to Brasilia’s history or because they are often crowded, such as the Templo da Boa Vontade, The Imported Goods Fair, the headquarters of the Attorney-General’s Office, of the Superior Court of Justice and JK Bridge, which has won international awards as the most beautiful bridge in the world, an attractive new and recent addition for tourists here.

Basic knowledge for the newcomer is some of the characteristic designations of the city. A “candango” is the worker who built Brasilia, having come from all corners of Brazil, a character immortalized in the Bruno Giorgio’s 8-meter sculpture referred to as Os Candangos. It lies in front of the Parlatorium of the Planalto Palace, at Três Poderes Square. The attentive observer will notice a detail that makes up part of the daily lives of the pioneers and inhabitants of Brasilia: lack of electrical wiring in the streets, all underground, at least in the main public spaces. Pioneers are those who arrived in the first years after the inauguration.

Esplanada dos Ministérios

Com seus 17 prédios, é apresentada como a “primeira classe” do avião, como corriqueiramente se compara o Plano Piloto, embora abominada por Lúcio Costa. Ao cruzar as largas avenidas do Eixo Monumental, pode-se constatar a harmonia da distribuição. Um lugar excelente para conferir isso é o alto da Torre de TV. De passagem, observe o Teatro Nacional.

Teatro nacional

Sua forma é a de uma pirâmide truncada, semelhante à pirâmide de Queóps (Egito); e a fachada, uma composição de cubos e retângulos de autoria de Athos Bulcão. Possui três salas de espetáculos (Martins Pena, Villa-Lobos e Alberto Nepomuceno) e muitas obras de arte. Foi inaugurado em 1981, como parte dos festejos do 21º aniversário da cidade. O hall abriga as esculturas Contorcionista, de Alfredo Ceschiatti, e O pássaro, de Marianne Peretti.

Esplanade of the Ministries

With its 17 buildings, is presented as the “first class” of the airplane, to which the Pilot Plan is comically compared, although Lúcio Costa hated this. When crossing the wide avenues of the Monumental Axis, one can verify the harmonic distribution. An excellent place to confirm this is from the top of the TV Tower. On passing, take note of the National Theater.

Palácio do Itamaraty

Outro cartão-postal de Brasília, guarda um fabuloso acervo de obras de arte e fica em posição oposta ao Palácio da Justiça, sede do Ministério da Justiça, na Esplanada. É a sede do Ministério das Relações Exteriores, também conhecido como Palácio dos Arcos. No lago que circunda o prédio está o Meteoro, escultura de Bruno Giorgio, formada por cinco blocos de mármore que correspondem aos cinco continentes. Além dos jardins, numerosas obras de arte valorizam o bom gosto da decoração, que opta pelo contraste entre o antigo e o contemporâneo moderno.

Palácio da Justiça

Sua fachada possui arcos que sustentam lajes curvas de onde saem cortinas d’água, chamadas pelo povo de “lágrimas de cassados”, numa referência ao período da ditadura, que alijou da vida pública políticos e líderes de classe.

Catedral Metropolitana

Projetada por Oscar Niemeyer, foi inaugurada em 1967. Sua construção consumiu 12 anos, devido à complexidade do projeto. A nave circular está abaixo do nível do solo. Para chegar até lá, o visitante percorre um túnel de piso e paredes negras, que desemboca num local de penumbra, chamado de zona de meditação. Concluído o trajeto, depara-se com a esplendorosa nave, iluminada por luz natural captada por vitrais de Marianne Peretti. O ovo representa vida; o azul, o útero. Os anjos, dispostos em diagonal como se estivessem em vôo, são os da Anunciação.

As paredes têm vibração acústica, o que dispensa microfone para o celebrante das missas, ouvidas com perfeição em qualquer ponto, sem que seja preciso alterar o timbre e a altura de voz. Faça um teste: mande alguém ficar na passagem da entrada e vá para o próximo vão. Fale em tom normal de voz, sem nenhum esforço. Dá para bater papo ou apenas conferir a informação. A voz leva dois segundos para se propagar até o outro lado.

Na porta de entrada ficam esculturas em bronze, com � metros de altura, dos quatro evangelistas — Lucas, Mateus, Marcos e João (este separado porque era o querubim de Jesus, seu preferido e destaque em toda a história sagrada). São obras do italiano Alfredo Ceschiatti. Outra informação importante sobre a Catedral: o teto do batistério tem a forma do pão e a base é o cálice do vinho. Lá dentro existe a única réplica oficial da Pietá.

Metropolitan Cathedral

This was projected by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1967. It took 12 years to build due to the project’s complexity. The circular nave is underground. To arrive there, the visitor has to pass through travel through a tunnel with black floor and walls, which ends in a type of twilight zone, called the meditation zone. After completing the path, one sees the nave in all its splendor, lit by natural light, filtered by the stained glass windows of Marianne Peretti. The egg represents life; the blue, the uterus. The angels, diagonally arranged as if they were flying, represent those of the Annunciation.

The walls have acoustic vibration, the priest not needing a microphone during masses, perfectly heard from anywhere inside the Cathedral, without being necessary for him to change the tone and highness of his voice. Take a test: tell someone to stand at the entrance and go to the next empty space. Speak in a normal tone of voice, without any effort. The voice takes two seconds to travel to the other side.

Bronze �-meter tall sculptures stand at the entrance doorway, of the four evangelists - Luke, Mathew, Mark and John (this one separated because he was Jesus’ cherubim, his favorite and highlighted throughout sacred history). These works were created by the Italian artist Alfredo Ceschiatti. Another important bit of information on the Cathedral: the text of the Baptistery is in the shape of bread and the base is in the shape of the wine chalice. Inside there is the only official replica of the Pietá.

Conjunto Cultural da República

Concluída em 2006, esta obra completa o projeto arquitetônico do Eixo Monumental. Também foi projetada por Oscar Niemeyer. Abriga a Biblioteca Nacional, com um pavilhão de 120 metros de comprimento divididos em cinco pavimentos, e Museu Nacional, com 1� mil metros quadrados de área e onde as condições de exposição são compatíveis com os padrões internacionais, o que viabiliza mostras de grande porte em Brasília.

Architectural Group of the Republic

Completed in 2006, this work completes the architectonic project of the Monumental Axis. Oscar Niemeyer was also projected it, which houses the National Library, with a 120-meter[396 feet] (long pavilion divided on five floors, and the National Museum, with an area of 1� thousand square meters [1�.6 square yards] and where the conditions for exhibitions are compatible to international standards, which makes it possible to stage major large scale exhibitions in Brasilia.

Congresso nacional

Com 28 andares cada um, os prédios dos Anexos I da Câmara e do Senado são os mais altos de Brasília. Estão unidos no meio por uma passarela e formam a letra H, que seria uma referência sutil às preocupações dos representantes do povo: Homem, Honra e Honestidade. O projeto representa a audácia arquitetônica de Niemeyer, pontilhada por liberdade e ousadia na forma. O teto convexo pertence à Câmara; o côncavo, ao Senado. Ligando os dois prédios principais, corredores amplos que desembocam nos respectivos plenários. Ambos possuem um incrível acervo de obras de arte, além de bibliotecas e jardins projetados por Burle Marx.

Praça dos Três Poderes

neste quadrilátero estão sediados os poderes constituídos do País — Legislativo, Executivo e Judiciário —, em absoluto equilíbrio, independência e harmonia visual. Além do Congresso, do Supremo Tribunal Federal e do Palácio do Planalto (também chamado Palácio dos Despachos, porque é o local de trabalho do presidente), outras belezas arquitetônicas fazem parte do conjunto da praça.

Panteão da Pátria

Foi construído em homenagem ao ex-presidente Tancredo Neves e aos heróis da pátria. Sua forma lembra a de uma pomba. O Salão Vermelho tem painel de Athos Bulcão; o Salão Principal, um painel histórico de João Câmara; os vitrais do prédio, de autoria de Marianne Peretti, formam o mapa do Brasil.

The National Congress

The two 28-floor buildings of Annexes I of the House and Senate Chambers are the tallest in Brasilia. They are joined in the middle by a catwalk, forming the letter H, a subtle reference to the representatives of the people: Man, Honor and Honesty. The project represents Niemeyer’s architectonic courage, restricted by freedom and daring of form. The convex ceiling belongs to the Lower House; the concave, to the Senate. Wide corridors connect the two main buildings which lead to the respective Plenary sessions. Both have incredible art work collections, in addition to libraries and gardens designed by Burle Marx.

Three Branches Square

This quadrangle houses the country’s constituted branches of power – the legislative, Executive and the Judiciary –, in total balance, independence and visual harmony. In addition to Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and Palácio do Planalto (also called Dispatch Palace, because it is where the president works), other architectonic beauties compose the square’s visual aspects.

Homeland Pantheon It was built to pay tribute to former president Tancredo Neves and to homeland heroes. Its form reminds one of a dove. The Red Room has a panel by Athos Bulcão; the Main Salon, a historic panel by João Câmara; the stained glass windows of the building, created by Marianne Peretti, form the map of Brazil.

Marco Brasília Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade

Inaugurado em 29 de julho de 1988, fica na praça o monumento referente à inscrição do Plano Piloto na relação dos bens declarados Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade pela Unesco.

Espaço Oscar niemeyer

Projeto do próprio arquiteto, chamado também de Mestre das Curvas, tem linhas simples, formato circular e abriga uma exposição permanente de painéis e fotos das suas obras em Brasília e no mundo.

Espaço lúcio Costa

Construção subterrânea e recente, também faz parte da praça. Abriga uma extraordinária maquete do Plano Piloto de Brasília, com 170 metros quadrados, construída pelos alunos do curso de arquitetura da Universidade de Brasília (UnB) e atualizada recentemente. É a homenagem de Oscar Niemeyer ao urbanista da cidade. Um detalhe muito importante do local: as legendas explicativas estão em braile. Outro pormenor que emociona o visitante mais atento é o texto Brasília, cidade que inventei. Painéis na parede do fundo reproduzem o relatório de Lúcio Costa à comissão que escolheu o projeto de sua autoria para Brasília. Nele, esmiúça tudo o que passou na sua cabeça quando concebeu a cidade, a partir do desenho de uma cruz. Há tiradas geniais em todo o texto. Até a curva acentuada na volta que se faz de contorno para sair da rodoviária tem uma razão peculiar. Segundo Lúcio Costa, “permite ao viajante uma última vista do Eixo Monumental da cidade antes de entrar no Eixo Rodoviário residencial — despedida psicologicamente desejável...” Genialidade perpetuada por Lúcio Costa, o relatório facilita o entendimento da cidade.

Brasilia: World Heritage Site Landmark

Inaugurated on July 29, 1988, the monument refers to the official addition of the Pilot Plan on Unesco`s World Heritage Sites list.

Oscar Niemeyer Space

A project by the architect himself, also called the Master of Curves, has simple lines, a circular format and hosts a permanent exhibition of panels and photos of his works in Brasilia and worldwide.

Lúcio Costa Space

This recent, underground construction also makes up part of the square. It houses an extraordinary 170-square meter scale model of the Pilot Plan, built by the architecture undergraduates at the Universidade de Brasilia (UnB), recently updated. It is a tribute by Oscar Niemeyer to the city’s urban planner. A very important detail of the location: the explanatory captions are in Braille. Another detail, which moves the more attentive visitor, is the text Brasilia, cidade que inventei. (Brasília, the city I invented). Panels on the back wall reproduce Lúcio Costa’s report to the commission that chose his urbanism project for Brasilia. He goes into great detail in the report about what had gone on in his mind on conceiving the city from the design of a cross. There are clever tirades in the entire text. The accentuated curve that served as a cloverleaf to exit the highway even has a peculiar reason. According to Lúcio Costa, “it allows the traveler a last sight of the city’s Monumental Axis before entering the residential Road Axis – a psychologically desirable farewell...” Genius perpetuated by Lúcio Costa, the report makes it easier to understand the city.

Memorial Israel Pinheiro

O engenheiro era o único da trinca mais famosa da construção de Brasília que não tinha recebido ainda uma homenagem da cidade, falha que está sendo reparada com a construção de um memorial de autoria de Oscar Niemeyer. Todavia, já existe na praça um busto em sua homenagem: Cabeça de Israel Pinheiro, de autoria de Horácio Peçanha.

Israel Pinheiro Memorial

The engineer was the only man from the most famous trio who built Brasilia, who had not received yet a tribute from the city. This failure is being remedied by the construction of a memorial by Oscar Niemeyer. Nevertheless, there is already a bust in the square to his tribute: Cabeça de Israel Pinheiro (Head of Israel Pinheiro), by Horácio Peçanha.

Pavilhão nacional

Detalhe da construção: o mastro está no mesmo eixo do Congresso, do Memorial JK e da Rodoviária. Monumento de autoria de Sérgio Bernardes, foi inaugurado em 1972. Abriga uma bandeira medindo 288 metros quadrados, que tremula no mastro, formado por 2� hastes — que correspondiam, na época da sua construção, ao número de Estados da Federação — a 100 metros de altura. A cada primeiro domingo do mês, ocorre a solenidade de Troca da Bandeira, coordenada pelas três armas — Exército, Marinha e Aeronáutica — e o GDF. É sempre um espetáculo de civismo que atrai centenas de turistas, moradores da cidade e adjacências.

Pombal

Escultura em concreto, de Oscar Niemeyer, foi a única obra construída no período do governo Jânio Quadros.

Palácio do Planalto

Sede do Poder Executivo, é um prédio com quatro andares que junta linhas curvas e retas, bem ao gosto do arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer. É em mármore e os vidros, hoje, são blindados. Os salões principais são o de Audiências, usado para a apresentação de credenciais de embaixadores estrangeiros, que tem como adorno principal um sofá do século 18, com três lugares, que pertenceu ao Palácio do Catete, no Rio; o Salão dos Espelhos, que dá acesso ao Parlatório e à rampa, sempre guarnecida por dois soldados do Batalhão da Guarda Presidencial (BGP), vestidos com o mesmo uniforme da guarda imperial de dom Pedro I, os Dragões da Independência; Salão dos Despachos, que fica atrás do Parlatório, é usado para atos solenes, com a presença de autoridades e convidados.

National Pavilion

An interesting construction detail is that the mast is on the same axis as Congress, the JK Memorial and the Highway. The monument created by Sérgio Bernardes was inaugurated in 1972. It houses a 288 square meter flag, at a height of 100 meters [330 feet], fluttering on the mast, formed by 24 poles – which at the time of its construction corresponded to the number of States in the Federation. Every first Sunday of the month, the solemnity of Changing the Flag is coordinated by the three armed forces – Army, Navy and Air Force – and the GDF. It is always a patriotic spectacle attracting hundreds of tourists, city residents and those of surrounding areas.

Pombal (Dovecote)

This concrete sculpture by Oscar Niemeyer was the only work created in the period of the Jânio Quadros administration.

Planalto Palace

Headquarters of the Executive Branch, this building has four floors joining curved and straight lines, quite to the liking of architect Oscar Niemeyer. It is in marble and glass, which is currently armored. The main rooms are: the Hearings Room, used for presenting credentials by foreign ambassadors, and its main adornment is an 18th century three-seat sofa, which belonged to Rio’s Catete Palace; the Mirror Room, which provides access to the Parlatorium and the to the ramp, always guarded by two soldiers from the Presidential Guard Battalion (BGP), dressed in the same uniform as that of the Imperial Guard of Dom Pedro I, the Dragons of Independence; Salão dos Despachos (Dispatch Room), located behind the Parlatorium, is used for solemnities, attended by authorities and guests.

The cabinet of the President of the Republic is on the third floor. The famous Meetings Room is below, where he sits at the head, with more than �9 seats. The Ministers work on the fourth floor. The Planalto Palace gathers art works such as Os orixás (African gods and goddesses), Colhendo bananas (Picking Bananas) and Praia do Nordeste (Northeastern Beach), by Djanira; a Burle Marx panel; As Mulatas, by Di Cavalcanti, and sculptures such as O flautista (The Flute Player), by Bruno Giorgio. It is possible to participate in a guided tour in groups of 2� people, on weekends, with the right to register in the Signatures Book, and to take home postcards and a folder with information about the Palace.

Supremo Tribunal Federal

Sede do Poder Judiciário, abriga uma biblioteca com cerca de 90 mil volumes, um salão nobre e o Salão do Conselho. Até hoje, o visitante deve observar o uso de trajes adequados, o que exclui calça comprida para mulheres.

Superior Tribunal de Justiça

Monumental conjunto arquitetônico projetado por Oscar Niemeyer, tem seis edifícios e é considerado um prédio inteligente pela tecnologia de ponta nele empregada. A fachada trata de forma diferente os Palácios de Justiça do Velho Mundo, com uma fileira de colunas, uma de floresta imaginária, curvas sinuosas e sensuais, numa visão mais moderna e muito criativa do autor.

Estação Rodoviária

No projeto de Lúcio Costa, ela seria o ponto de encontro da cidade, com uma linda vista da Esplanada dos Ministérios, na medida em que está num plano mais alto, portanto, um traço de união entre a população burguesa e a obreira; lugar onde as pessoas se cruzariam quando chegassem para trabalhar ou voltassem para suas casas. Isso, entretanto, jamais aconteceu e o local acabou tomado pela massa operária que reside nas cidades periféricas ou no Entorno do DF.

Supreme Court

The headquarters of the Judiciary Branch houses a library with approximately 90 thousand volumes, a noble salon and the Board Room. Even today, visitors must dress appropriately, which prohibits pants for women.

Superior Court of Justice This monumental architectonic ensemble designed by Oscar Niemeyer has six buildings and is considered an intelligent building because of the cutting edge technology employed. The facade addresses form differently from the Old World Palaces of Justice, with a row of columns, one with an imaginary forest, sinuous and sensual curves, a more modern and very creative vision by the architect.

Bus Station

This Lúcio Costa project intended to be the city’s meeting point, with a beautiful view of Esplanada dos Ministérios, which is on a higher plane. Thus, it creates a characteristic of union between the bourgeois population and the working class; a place where people cross when they arrive at work or went back home. However, this never materialized, and the location ended up being taken over by the mass of workers who live in the satellite cities or in the surrounding areas of the Federal District.

Torre de TV

A Torre de TV tem 22� metros de altura. A 2� metros do térreo funciona o Museu Nacional de Gemas; do patamar, onde fica o mirante, tem-se uma das mais belas vistas de Brasília. Quem subir verá o Planetário, o Centro de Convenções — única obra destacada no Eixo Monumental sem a grife de Niemeyer, é criação de Sérgio Bernardes —, o Estádio Mané Garrincha, o Ginásio Nilson Nelson, o Autódromo Nelson Piquet e, em breve, também, a sede do Clube do Choro. Na cauda do avião fica a administração distrital: Palácio do Buriti, Tribunal de Contas do DF, Tribunal de Justiça e a Câmara Legislativa. Ao lado da Torre, uma empresa oferece vôos de helicóptero com duração de 12 minutos.

Palácio do Buriti

É uma das sede do Governo do Distrito Federal. O palácio foi inaugurado em agosto de 1969 e seu nome tem origem numa palmeira que está plantada na praça, em frente do prédio. À sua frente está uma réplica da escultura Loba romana, doada pela prefeitura de Roma; e a escultura Forma espacial do Plano, de Ênio Liamini, doada pelo ex-presidente da Argentina Jorge Rafael Videla.

TV Tower

The TV Tower is 22� meters [7�9.2 feet] high. The National Gems Museum is located 2� meters from ground level; from this stretch, where the observation point is located, some of the most beautiful panoramic views of Brasilia can be seen. Those wanting to go up there will see the Planetarium, the Convention Center– the only work highlighted in the Monumental Axis without Niemeyer’s personal trademark, it was created by Sérgio Bernardes –, Mané Garrincha Stadium, Nilson Nelson Gymnasium, Nelson Piquet Speedway and, also soon, the headquarters of Clube do Choro. The district administration is located on the tail of the airplane: Buriti Palace, Federal District Budget Oversight Board, Higher Court, and the Legislative Chamber. A company next to the Tower offers 12-minute helicopter flights.

Buriti Palace

This is the headquarters of the Federal District Government. The palace was inaugurated in August 1969 and its name originates from a Palm Tree that was planted in the square in front of the building. A replica of the sculpture Loba romana, donated by Rome’s City Hall lies in front of it; and the sculpture Forma espacial do Plano (Plane’s Spacial Form), by Ênio Liamini, was donated by the former president of Argentina Jorge Rafael Videla.

Memorial JK

Inaugurado no dia 12 de setembro de 1981, data do aniversário de nascimento de Juscelino, é o único dos monumentos de Brasília onde se paga quantia simbólica como ingresso. O prédio é administrado pela família do ex-presidente, “o brasileiro do século”, que não deixou fortuna. Alguns pontos do Memorial devem ser observados, como o enorme tapete arraiolo (ponto da mais tradicional tapeçaria de Minas Gerais, terra natal do ex-presidente) e outros tantos espalhados no ambiente. O sistema de alarme infravermelho da biblioteca é poderoso e eficiente. A cripta do túmulo do ex-presidente inspira refletir sobre uma frase dele, registrada num dos painéis que adornam o escritório, no térreo: “Tudo se transforma em alvorada nesta cidade que se abre para o amanhã”.

Museu de Arte Moderna

Projetado para ser o Memorial dos Povos Indígenas (Museu do Índio), trocou de nome para ser mais compatível com o acervo.

Catedral Santa Maria dos Militares Rainha da Paz

É a obra mais recente de Niemeyer no DF. Data de 199� e foi erguida no lugar onde o Papa rezou missa quando esteve em Brasília. Logo adiante está o Cruzeiro, local onde foi rezada a primeira missa e é a parte mais alta do Plano Piloto, com 1.100 metros de altitude.

JK Memorial

Inaugurated on September 12, 1981, Juscelino’s birthday, this is the sole Brasilia monuments where a symbolic fee is paid at the entrance. The building is managed by the family of the former president, “the Brazilian of the century”, who did not leave a large inheritance for family. Some points of the Memorial must be looked at, such as the huge arraiolo rug (the main point of the most traditional tapestry of Minas Gerais, native state of the ex-president) and many others scattered in the environment. The library’s infrared alarm system is powerful and efficient. The crypt of the ex-president’s tomb inspires reflection on one of his sayings, recorded on one of the panels decorating the ground floor office: “Everything in this city is transformed into dawn which opens up to tomorrow”.

Modern Art Museum

This was designed to be the Indigenous Peoples Memorial (Museu do Índio), but changed its name to become more representative of the collection.

St. Mary of the Military Queen of Peace Cathedral

The most recent niemeyer work in the Federal District, this was completed in 1994, built where Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in Brasilia. Just a short distance ahead lies the Cruzeiro, the place where the First Mass in the city was held, the tallest part of the Pilot Plan: 1,100 meters [3,630 feet].

Setor Militar Urbano

Seguindo em frente pelo Eixo Monumental, o setor fica à direita, depois da Catedral Rainha da Paz. Construído no período dos governos militares, reúne igreja, setor de moradia para os servidores e também clubes diferenciados conforme a patente dos associados, além de hotel, hospital e até uma quadra residencial só para oficiais generais. O prédio do auditório tem o formato da letra M, de militar. E, marcados por fora em viga de concreto, os 10 territórios militares do País. Na pista de desfiles, mastro para as bandeiras dos 27 Estados, que só são hasteadas em ocasiões festivas. Já a pista larga do SMU pode ser utilizada numa emergência para pouso de aeronaves militares, pois os postes de iluminação têm mecanismo próprio para viabilizar uma praça de guerra. Outro detalhe: o eco natural da concha formada pelo palanque para assistir a desfiles tem a forma do punho de uma espada da qual a lâmina seria o obelisco. Coisas da genial pena de Oscar Niemeyer.

É um dos lugares mais visitados pelos turistas, conhecida como Paraguaizinho ou Feira do Paraguai. Tem mercadoria de procedência variada, muito diversificada e de toda qualidade. Passou por uma grande reforma física para compatibilizar as instalações com a movimentação.

Urban Military Sector

On moving ahead through the Monumental Axis, this sector is on the right, after the Queen of Peace Cathedral. Built in the military government period, it joins the church, dwelling sector for servants and also differentiated clubs, according to the privilege of associates, in addition to a hotel, hospital and even a residential block just for generals. The auditorium structure is in the format of the letter M, for Military. Moreover, Brazil’s 10 military territories are marked outside a concrete beam. On the parade floor, there is a mast for the flags of the 27 states, only raised on festive occasions. The wide SMU lane can be employed in emergencies for landing military aircraft, since the light posts have their own mechanism to make a war square viable. Another detail is the natural echo of the semidome formed by the grandstand for watching parades is in the form of a sword handle, with an obelisk blade. One more stroke of genius sketched in quill by Oscar Niemeyer.

Imported Goods Trade Fair

The Paraguaizinho or Paraguay Fair is one of the most frequently visited locations by tourists. It displays much diversified goods from different places, and all of good quality. It was physically renovated to expand facilities to meet the movement.

Ponte JK

Desde a inauguração, em 1� de dezembro de 2002, tem atraído turistas, engenheiros, arquitetos e profissionais afins, estudantes, curiosos, gente da cidade e de todo o Brasil interessada em contemplar a obra que custou perto de R$ 200 milhões. O fantástico projeto de Alexandre Chan tem 1.220 metros de extensão e 2� metros de largura, sustentado por três arcos apoiados em �8 cabos de aço, que formam o sistema nervoso da ponte. Tão sofisticado que exige manutenção preventiva por monitoramento constante.

Palácio da Alvorada

As colunas que sustentam a alvenaria do Palácio, símbolo mais conhecido de Brasília, têm a peculiaridade de praticamente não tocarem o chão, assegurando leveza incrível ao conjunto. É uma obra que merece ser contemplada. O espelho d’água, barreira que dispensa cercas, foi construído durante o período de regime de exceção e hoje faz as vezes das fontes de desejos existente mundo afora. O Palácio foi inaugurado em 19�8, está guarnecido por inúmeras obras de arte e tem uma capela cuja fachada é assinada por Athos Bulcão.

JK Bridge

Since its inauguration on December 1�, 2002, this has attracted tourists, engineers, architects and professionals alike, students, curiosity seekers, people from the city and from all over Brazil interested in seeing the work that cost some R$ 200 million. The fantastic project by Alexandre Chan is 1,220 meters [�,026 feet] long and 2� meters [79.2 feet] wide, supported by three arches braced by �8 steel cables, which forms the bridge’s nervous system. It is so sophisticated that it requires preventive maintenance by constant monitoring.

Alvorada Palace

The pillars that support the masonry of the Palace, Brasilia’s most famous symbol, are peculiar by practically not touching the ground, ensuring incredible lightness for the ensemble. It is a work worthy of contemplation. The waterfall, a barrier that eliminates the need for fences, was built during the period of the “exception regime” and today serves as the fountains of desires existing around the world. The Palace, inaugurated in 19�8, is adorned by countless art works and has a chapel whose facade is signed by Athos Bulcão.

Esse é um efervescente e criativo segmento, impulsionado por projetos como o Arte Por Toda Parte, da Secretaria de Cultura, que viabiliza muitas realizações em Brasília por intermédio de parcerias e associações. Abrange as áreas de música, teatro, dança, literatura, artes plásticas e cinema. Uma dessas parcerias gerou o Ateliê Aberto, que garante a visitação dos ateliês de trabalho de 68 artistas locais, sempre no primeiro sábado de cada mês.

Também as festas populares fazem parte do calendário de eventos de Brasília, com destaque para a encenação da Paixão de Cristo, no Morro da Capelinha, na cidade de Planaltina, que mobiliza comunidades e gente de toda a região do DF e do Entorno. A Festa do Morango, promovida no mês de agosto em Brazlândia, é outro evento importante. Tem ainda a tradicional Festa dos Estados, que voltou a ser realizada em 200�; a Micarecandanga, o famoso carnaval fora de época; e o Bumba-meu-Boi de Mestre Teodoro, em Sobradinho. Um projeto interessante é o que leva música clássica executada pela Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional a cidades vizinhas. A Feira do Livro de Brasília é promovida todos os anos e traz gente de vários Estados para o evento.

A atividade cultural tem sido um grande instrumento para o turismo, na medida em que pode trazer novos visitantes para a cidade. Prova disso são os festivais de inverno e verão realizados na Escola de Música, que também oferece cursos e atividades para brasileiros e estrangeiros, e o já tradicional Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro.

This is a lively and creative segment, driven by projects such as Arte Por Toda Parte (Art Everywhere) of the Culture Office, which makes many accomplishments in Brasilia viably by way of partnerships and associations. It covers the areas of music, theater, dance, literature, the plastic arts and cinema. One of these partnerships brought about the Ateliê Aberto (Alberto’s Studio), which guaranties that the studios of 68 local artists are always visited on the first Saturday of each month.

The popular festivals are also part of scheduled events in Brasilia, emphasizing the setting of Christ’s Passion, on the Little Chapel Hill, in the city of Planaltina, mobilizing communities and people from the entire DF region and surrounding areas. The Strawberry Festival held in August in Brazlândia, is another important event. There is also the traditional Festival of the States, which began to be held again in 200�; Micarecandanga, the famous off season Carnival; and the Bumba-meu-Boi de Mestre Teodoro (Bull Dance), in Sobradinho. An interesting project promotes classical music performed by the National Theater Symphonic Orchestra in neighboring cities. The annual Brasília Book Fair draws visitors from many states.

Cultural activity has been an important instrument for tourism, since it can bring new visitors to the city. The winter and summer festivals held in the Music School serve as proof, which offer courses and activities for Brazilians and foreigners, and the traditional Brasilia Brazilian Film Festival.

A cidade conta com boas salas de espetáculos e os mais diversos palcos, além de a população mostrar grande receptividade para shows artísticos e musicais, festivais e peças teatrais. O Brasília Music Festival é um deles: gente do País inteiro vem assistir às apresentações.

O Clube do Choro é, todavia, uma manifestação cultural que tem a cara de Brasília, orgulho de sua população, pela qualidade dos artistas e originalidade da proposta, revitalizada a cada apresentação semanal. Mobiliza platéia cativa e é um excelente programa para quem se hospeda na cidade. Fica no Setor Cultural, próximo ao Planetário, no Eixo Monumental.

The city has good concert and show venues with quite different stages, as well as a population that welcomes artistic and musical shows, festivals and plays. The Brasilia Music Festival is one of these: people from the entire country come to see the shows.

However, Clube do Choro is a cultural manifestation that has the profile of Brasilia, the pride of its population, by the quality of artists and originality of that proposed, revitalized at each weekly presentation. It mobilizes its captive audience and is excellent entertainment for those lodged in the city. It is in the Cultural Sector, next to the Planetarium, on the Monumental Axis.

Fazendo jus à fama de uma das cidades mais místicas do País, Brasília abriga templos de diferentes religiões, alguns apreciados como obras de arte. Além da Catedral e da Igrejinha de Fátima, cartões-postais da cidade, merecem destaque a sede da Loja Maçônica Grande Oriente do Brasil, o Centro Islâmico do Brasil, a Igreja Messiânica Mundial, o Templo Budista, o da Seicho-No-Iê, o Santuário Dom Bosco, o Oratório do Soldado, a sede da Sara Nossa Terra, a Catedral da Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus e o Templo da Legião da Boa Vontade — sendo este último um dos pontos turísticos mais visitados de Brasília.

Um lugar interessante é o Mosteiro de São Bento. Fica no Lago Sul e a missa católica, aos domingos, tem canto gregoriano. Já a missa rezada em francês, celebrada no primeiro sábado de cada mês, na Capela das Irmãs Marcelinas, também no Lago Sul, é um evento do calendário religioso. A comunidade polonesa tem encontro marcado todo primeiro domingo do mês na Igreja de São Francisco, quando é rezada a missa em polonês.

Brasília está cercada de comunidades religiosas. Dentre elas, o Vale do Amanhecer, a Cidade Eclética e a Cidade da Paz. Até o Padre Cícero Romão Baptista, venerado pelos cearenses, conquistou lugar de destaque na cidade: sua estátua, em tamanho natural, está aberta a visitação na Igreja de N. Senhora da Medalha Milagrosa, na 910 Sul. Existe ainda um circuito das pirâmides, que traça as semelhanças entre prédios da cidade, como o da CEB, na L2 Norte, e o Teatro Nacional, com as pirâmides do Egito, assunto que foi objeto de tese de pós-graduação e virou roteiro turístico religioso, o Brasília Secreta, rica opção para quem gosta do segmento.

Meriting its fame as one of the country’s most mystical cities, Brasilia has temples from different religions, of which some are appreciated as art works. In addition to the Cathedral and the Igrejinha de Fátima Church, post card attractions of the city, the headquarters of the Masonic Lodge of the Great Orient of Brazil, the Brazilian Islamic Center, the International Messianic Church, the Buddhist Temple, and that of Seicho-No-Iê, the Dom Bosco Shrine, the Soldier Oratory, the headquarters of Sara Nossa Terra (Heal Our Land), the Cathedral of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, and the Temple of Legião da Boa Vontade-the latter one of the most visited tourist spots in Brasilia- show the diversity of religious belief.

An interesting place is St. Benedict’s Monastery in Lago Sul (South Lake). There is Gregorian chant in the Catholic mass on Sundays. The Mass spoken in French, celebrated on the first Saturday of each month, in the Chapel of the Marcelina Sisters, also in Lago Sul, is also scheduled in the religious calendar. The Polish community meets every first Sunday of the month in the Church of St. Francis, when Mass is spoken in Polish.

Brasilia is surrounded by religious communities. Among them, Vale do Amanhecer (Valley of the Dawn), Cidade Eclética (Eclectic City) and Cidade da Paz (Peace City). Even Padre Cícero Romão Baptista, venerated by the people from Ceará state, has gained a place of prominence in the city: his natural scale to life statue is open to visitation at the Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, in 910 Sul. There is also a circuit of pyramids, which outlines similarities between buildings in the city, such as the CEB, in L2 Norte, and the National Theater, and the Egyptian pyramids, a matter already subject of a postgraduate thesis, which became a religious tourism itinerary, Brasilia Secreta, a rich option for admirers of this segment.

Igrejinha de Fátima

Inaugurada em 19�8, é o primeiro templo de alvenaria erguido na cidade, mandado construir por dona Sara Kubitschek em pagamento de promessa. Seu formato lembra o chapéu de uma freira. As paredes externas são guarnecidas por painel de azulejos de Athos Bulcão. Fica na EQS 107/108.

Santuário Dom Bosco

Projeto de Carlos Alberto Naves, tem 80 colunas estilo brise soleil que fecham em arcos góticos, de 18 metros de altura, com vitrais em 12 tons de azul, simbolizando um céu estrelado ou a luz do dia. Eles formam um vão totalmente livre, medindo 1.600 metros quadrados. E como isso é possível? A resposta está no lustre central, montado no teto e sustentado por cabos de aço que, por sua vez, vêm de dentro dos arcos, amarrando o concreto. Desenho de Alvimar Moreira, o lustre tem 7.�00 copos de vidro murano e 180 lâmpadas; pesa 2.600 quilos. Sorte de quem consegue vê-lo aceso, o que só acontece em cerimônias, pois a regalia é cobrada por minuto. A cruz do altar mede 8 metros e o Cristo, com �,� metros de altura, foi esculpido numa única tora de madeira por Godofredo Traller, da cidade catarinense de Treze Tílias. As portas do templo são em chapa de ferro e bronze e trazem gravados pelo escultor Siron Franco temas sobre o sonho profético de Dom Bosco, a primeira missa, a Via Sacra e o próprio Santuário. Fica na W3 Sul, próximo da região central.

Church of Our Lady of Fatima

Inaugurated in 1958, the church is the first masonry temple built in the city, as ordered by Mrs. Sara Kubitschek to pay for a promise to God. Its format reminds one of a nun’s hat. The outside walls are decorated by a panel of Athos Bulcão blue tiles. It lies in EQS 107/108.

Dom Bosco Shrine

A project by Carlos Alberto Naves, this has 80 brise soleil style pillars, which close into 18 meter [�9.� feet] high Gothic arches, with stained glass windows in 12 shades of blue, symbolizing a starry sky or the daylight. They form a totally free opening that measures 1,600 square meters. How is this possible? The answer lies in the central chandelier mounted on the ceiling and supported by steel cables, which, in turn, come from inside the arches and tie the concrete. Originating from a Alvimar Moreira drawing, the chandelier has 7,�00 Murano glass cups and 180 light bulbs; it weights 2,600 kilos. Those who can see it lit are lucky, an instance which only happens during ceremonies, because the privilege is billed per minute. The altar’s cross measures 8 meters [26.� feet] and the Christ, �.� meters [1�.19 feet] tall, was sculpted from a single log of wood by Godofredo Traller in the city Treze Tílias in Santa Catarina state. The temple’s doors are iron and brass plated, and the sculptor Siron Franco engraved themes on them about the prophetic dream of Dom Bosco, the first mass, the Way of the Cross, and the Sanctuary itself. It is located in W� South, next to the central region.

Localizado no Setor Militar Urbano, destina-se a cerimônias ecumênicas.

Metropolitan Cathedral

Oscar Niemeyer designed this cathedral, which was consecrated to Our Lady of Aparecida. Construction took 12 whole years due to the complexity of the project and was finally inaugurated in 1967. It is on Esplanada dos Ministérios.

Queen of Peace Cathedral

This is located on the Monumental Axis, a little after the JK Memorial. Dating back to 199�, it was built where Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in Brasilia.

Soldier’s Oratory

Located in the Urban Military Sector, it is utilized for ecumenical ceremonies.

Templo da legião da Boa Vontade

Funciona 24 horas e está localizado no SGAS 915, ao lado do Campo da Esperança, o cemitério da cidade. Inaugurado em outubro de 1989, o templo possui uma nave principal, composta de uma pirâmide com sete faces cujo ápice recebeu o maior cristal puro encontrado no Brasil: mede �0 centímetros de altura e pesa 21 quilos. Dentro dela existe o Trono de Deus, um altar inspirado na escala espiritual evolutiva do ser humano; seus sete degraus representam a infinita misericórdia de Deus e a súplica dos que O buscam em todas as suas formas e nomes. Como é um templo ecumênico, o projeto valoriza os quatro elementos da natureza (água, ar, terra e fogo).

Legião da Boa Vontade Temple

This is open 2� hours a day, and is located in SGAS 915, next to the city cemetery Campo da Esperança (Field of Hope). Inaugurated in October 1989, the temple has a main nave, composed of a seven-faced pyramid and the largest pure crystal found in Brazil was placed on its apex, displaying a height of �0 centimeters [16 inches] and weight of 21 kilos [�6.2 pounds]. The Throne of God resides inside, an altar inspired by the evolutionary spiritual scale of the human being; its seven steps represent God’s infinite mercy and the prayer of those who seek Him in all His forms and names. The project gives value to the four natural elements (water, air, earth and fire) since it is an ecumenical temple.

Mesquita do Centro Islâmico do Brasil

Legítimo exemplar da arquitetura árabe, é a maior do Brasil, com capacidade para receber mil pessoas. Ocupa uma área de 2.800 metros quadrados. Possui cinco blocos e um minarete de �7 metros de altura, do qual o sacerdote convoca os fiéis para as cinco orações diárias. Fica na SGAN 912, Módulo F.

Templo Budista da Terra Pura

É uma réplica do templo Fukui, no Japão, peça de contraste com o plano moderno de Brasília. Seu interior é dourado e abriga uma enorme estátua de Buda. Oferece diversos horários para meditação. Fica na EQS 315/316.

Seicho-no-Iê

De arquitetura xintoísta, é o templo de uma crença que procura manter vivas as tradições do Japão. Fica na EQS �0�/�0�.

Catedral da Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus

Erguida na Entrequadra 212/21� Sul, é sede da religião de linhas neopentecostais, fundada no Brasil, que hoje está presente em, pelo menos, mais 20 países.

Sara nossa Terra

Criada em Brasília, em 1992, também é uma religião evangélica neopentecostal. Possui hoje cerca de ��0 igrejas espalhadas no Brasil e no exterior. Na capital, a sede fica na QMSW 0�, Setor Sudoeste, próximo do Eixo Monumental.

Brazilian Islamic Center Mosque

A legitimate example of Arabic architecture, this is the biggest in Brazil, holding up to one thousand people. It occupies With an area of 2,800 square meters [�,�60 square yards]. it has five blocks and a 37-meter tall minaret, with which the priest calls the faithful to the five daily prayers. It is located at SGAN 912, Module F.

Pure Earth Buddhist Temple

This is a replica of the Fukui Temple in Japan, a piece in contrast to Brasilia’s modern plane. Its golden interior houses a huge statue of the Buddha. Several times are available for meditation. It is at EQS �1�/�16.

Seicho-No-Iê

In Xintoist architecture, this temple belongs to a belief seeking to maintain the traditions of Japan alive. It is located at EQS �0�/�0�.

Universal Church of the Kingdom of God Cathedral

Built between blocks 212 and /21� Sul, it is the headquarters of the neopentecostal sects. Founded in Brazil, the Church is currently present in at least 20 countries.

Heal Our Land

Created in Brasilia in 1992, it is also a neopentecostal evangelical religion. It currently has some ��0 churches spread in Brazil and abroad. In Brasília the headquarters is at QMSW 0�, Southeast Sector, near the Monumental Axis.

Exemplar típico do sincretismo religioso, foi fundado em 1969 por uma ex-motorista de caminhão que virou a líder espiritual da comunidade, conhecida como Tia Neiva. Fica perto da cidade de Planaltina, a �2 km do Plano Piloto, no km 10 da rodovia DF 15.

Cidade Eclética

Instalou-se no Planalto Central em 19�6. Prega a unificação de todas as religiões e fica no município de Santo Antônio do Descoberto, a 70 km de Brasília, com acesso pela BR 060. Para participar dos trabalhos espirituais, as mulheres devem usar roupas discretas: saia abaixo dos joelhos, nenhum decote nem adereços espalhafatosos.

Grande Oriente do Brasil

Fica na 914 Sul e é uma das mais importantes lojas maçônicas do País. Construção imponente, mas sem suntuosidade.

City of Peace

Located on BR 0�0, on the way to the city Gama and 26 km [16.�0 miles]from the Pilot Plan. Granja do Ipê serves as a reference point.

Valley of the Dawn

A typical example of religious syncretism, this community was founded in 1969 by a female ex-truck driver, who became a spiritual leader known as Tia Neiva. It is close to the city of Planaltina, �2 km [26.0� miles] from the Pilot Plan, at km 10 on highway DF 15.

Eclectic City

Installed on the Central Plateau in 19�6, the community preaches the unification of all religions. It is located in the municipality of Santo Antônio do Descoberto, 70 km [��.� miles] from Brasilia, with access by BR 060. To participate in the spiritual rites, women must wear discreet clothing: skirt below the knees, no neckline or extravagant jewelry.

Great Orient of Brazil

Stately built, but not sumptuous, at 91� Sul, this is one of the most important Masonic Lodges in Brazil.

Inaugurated four years ago, this is a meeting point for the city’s tanned youth. However, people of ages and tribes have fun, flirt and enjoy the place, which is a reference point in terms of entertainment in the Pilot Plan. It could not be any other way, because at Pier 21, there is a large concentration of restaurants, snack bars, cinemas, bars, nightclubs and stores. There, entertainment is the priority for all, and in addition visitors can count on total safety and comfort, which the shopping center structure provides.

Always crowded with beautiful people, it also has a food square in fast-food style, with cafeteria, sweetshops, sandwich bars, ice cream parlors, cake shops, and light food bars. For shopping, there is an offer of esoteric stores, chocolatiers, jewelry stores, megabookstores, beach wear, radical sports nutrition, perfumery and cosmetics, shoes and young fashion. Brasília dispõe de 100 metros quadrados de verde por habitante, o que corresponde a um índice quatro vezes maior do que o preconizado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), que é de 2� metros quadrados por habitante. Temos também mil jardins floridos, 50 milhões de metros quadrados de gramado, mais de � milhões de exemplares de 1�0 espécies de árvores plantadas. E como prova de que a cidade enaltece a natureza, existem 6� parques, sendo 11 deles de uso múltiplo e 12 unidades de conservação. Desses, três ficam a minutos dos Setores Hoteleiros Norte e Sul: um convite aos que não abrem mão de caminhadas e do estreito contato com a natureza.

Cidade-Parque

Para alegria dos habitantes da cidade e dos visitantes, Brasília vestiu-se de verde: árvores, arbustos, canteiros de flores e extensas áreas gramadas fazem parte do cotidiano de quem vive no DF. Brasilia has 100 square meters [120 square yards] of green space per inhabitant, which corresponds to an index four times greater than that prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO), which is 2� square meters [�0 square yards] per inhabitant. There are also one thousand flower gardens, �0 million square meters [�0 square yards] of grass, more than � million types of planted trees belonging to 1�0 species of same. Brasilia’s 6� parks are proof that that the city respects nature, as 11 of the parks are multi-use and 12 are conservation units. Three of these parks are minutes away from the North and South Hotel Sectors: an invitation to those who cannot do without walks and close contact with nature.

Park City

To the merriment of the city’s inhabitants and visitors, Brasilia dresses green: trees, bushes, flower gardens, and large grassy areas that are part of the daily lives of dwellers in the Federal District - DF. This is what characterizes the bucolic atmosphere and deepens the sense of well-being, complemented by the light and view of the horizon, in no less than �0 km [18.6 miles] of sidewalks, among the residential blocks and superblocks, used by the population for daily walks.

1- Parque da Cidade

Nome como é conhecido o Parque Sarah Kubitschek, maior parque urbano da América Latina, com �,2 milhões de metros quadrados. Está a cinco minutos do Setor Hoteleiro Sul e a dez do Setor Hoteleiro Norte. Nos finais de semana, chega a receber até 20 mil pessoas. Entre os usuários, autoridades, políticos, personalidades, artistas e muitos ministros que costumam praticar caminhadas matinais pelas pistas, que medem, juntas, quase 10 km. É um lugar incorporado à vida do brasiliense, que encontra ali uma série de atividades, como pista de kart, parques de diversão e infantil, Caminhada da Lua, massagens, ginástica chinesa, roda de capoeira, unibiótica — tem tudo isso no Parque da Cidade. É possível, também, alugar bicicletas (na loja do estacionamento 8) e medir a pressão arterial ou os níveis de colesterol e açúcar no sangue, mediante pagamento de taxa simbólica, serviço prestado nos postos do Corpo de Bombeiros. O Parque funciona 24 horas, tem vigilância constante e pode ser visitado também de automóvel.

2- Parque nacional de Brasília

Ou simplesmente Água Mineral, que é o nome da reserva ecológica. Mantém praticamente intocada, nos seus �0.��6 hectares, ou �0�,� milhões de metros quadrados, uma boa mostra da típica vegetação do cerrado brasileiro, com espécies como o pau-terra. Essa gigantesca área verde, também alcançável em minutos tomando como ponto de partida os Setores Hoteleiros Norte ou Sul, tem importância estratégica para o DF, porque abriga dezenas de nascentes de águas cristalinas, que formam a Barragem de Santa Maria e também enormes piscinas disponíveis para banhos. Dispõe de trilha bem estruturada e sinalizada para caminhada na mata.

1- City Park

Known as the Parque Sarah Kubitschek, it is the largest urban park in Latin America, totaling �.2 million square meters [5.04 million square yards]. It is five minutes from the Southern Hotel Sector and ten minutes from the Northern Hotel Sector. On weekends up to 20 thousand people can visit the park. 2 - National Park of Brasilia

This is also simply called Água Mineral (Mineral Water), which is the name of the ecological reserve. It has been practically untouched, in all of its �0,��6 hectares [7�,�7�.�2 acres], or �0�.� million square meters [�6�.2 square yards] , a good sample of typical Brazilian cerrado (waste land) vegetation, with species such as pau-terra (a large tree from the Cerrado region). This gigantic green area, which can also be reached in minutes from the North and/or South Hotel Sectors, has strategic importance for the Federal District, because it harbors dozens of crystal clear water springs, which form the Santa Maria Dam and also huge natural swimming pools available for bathing. It also has a well-structured and signposted track to walk in the forest.

3- Parque Olhos D’Água

Com 21 hectares, este parque faz parte da vida dos moradores da Asa Norte: fica na altura das Superquadras �1�/�1�. A área oferece trilhas para caminhadas, tem um lago natural e é um lugar propício para quem gosta de relaxar desfrutando o prazer de apreciar a natureza.

Para usar uma linguagem atual, a partir das seis e meia da tarde, o Pontão começa a bombar — quer dizer, ferver de gente que chega de todo lado. As pessoas vêm do trabalho, da malhação ou para ela, oferecida numa tenda, bem em frente do Lago, da escola, enfim, o que não falta é freqüentador para o lugar, considerado um dos melhores points de Brasília. Inaugurado há quatro anos, funciona como pólo gastronômico, centro de compras, lazer e diversão. Tem até luau nas noites de lua cheia.

Bay Park

O parque aquático tem os mais variados brinquedos, como escorregadores, rio mágico, piscina de ondas e de hidromassagem, playground aquático e toboáguas. Faz parte de um empreendimento que inclui �06 apartamentos e suítes, business center, restaurante, bar e outros confortos para hóspedes e não-hóspedes — tudo isso à beira do Lago Paranoá.

Eixão do lazer

Todos os domingos, das 8 às 18 horas, as seis faixas do Eixo Rodoviário viram rua do lazer para a população, que, além de praticar esportes, andar de bicicleta e levar as crianças para passear, contam com uma variada programação que inclui a apresentação de artistas e outras manifestações culturais e esportivas.

3- Olhos D’Água Park

With an area of 21 hectares [�1.87 acres], this park makes up part of the life of the North Wing inhabitants: it is close to SuperBlocks �1�/�1�. The area offers tracks for walking, has a natural lake and is a favorite location for those who like to relax enjoying the pleasure of appreciating nature.

Pontão do Lago Sul

To use current language, from six thirty pm on, Pontão starts to get packed and become “awesome” and “sizzle” with people from all over. People coming from work, the gym or to exercise in a specially erected tent in front of the Lake and school, thus, there is no shortage of people there. The place, Inaugurated four years ago, is considered one of the best spots in Brasilia and functions as a gastronomic center, shopping area, leisure and amusement. There are even Luaus held when there is a full moon.

Bay Park

The aquatic park has the most varied attractions, such as sliding boards, a magic river, swimming pool with waves and Jacuzzi, aquatic playground and water toboggan. It is part of an enterprise that includes �06 apartments and suites, a business center, restaurant, bar and other comforts for guests and non-guests– all this on the shore of the Paranoá Lake.

Leisure Axis

Every Sunday, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, the six strips of the Road Axis turn into a leisure street for the population, which, in addition to practicing sports, biking, and walking with the children, can also participate in a varied schedule including presentation of artists and other cultural and sporting events.

Jardim Zoológico

Criado em dezembro de 19�9, o Jardim Zoológico de Brasília era um dos principais lugares de diversão dos candangos, que vinham de todo o País para trabalhar na construção na nova capital. Hoje, continua muito procurado como local de lazer e entretenimento. Fica próximo do Plano Piloto, é de fácil acesso e o ingresso sai a R$ 2,00. Crianças de até 10 anos e adultos acima de 60 anos não pagam.

O lugar é aprazível, com muitas árvores, amplo gramado e bem sinalizado, um convite à prática de atividades físicas e a caminhadas. O ZooBrasília oferece um diferencial único em comparação aos demais zôos do mundo: permite aos visitantes percorrer de automóvel toda a sua extensão. Ele ocupa 1�9,7� hectares da área de 728,86 hectares de propriedade da Fundação Pólo Ecológico de Brasília, sua mantenedora. Abriga 1.�00 animais, num total de 2�� espécies vivendo em espaços que tentam reproduzir o hábitat natural deles. Embora possua animais exóticos, a maioria da coleção representa a fauna da América do Sul, em especial do cerrado brasileiro.

Zoo

Created in December 19�9, Brasilia’s Zoo was one of the main places for the amusement of the candangos, migrants from all over the Country working on construction of the new capital. It continues to be a preferred location for leisure and entertainment. It is near the Pilot Plan, easy to access and entry is R$ 2,00. Children up to 10 years old and adults above 60 do not pay.

It is a quiet location, with many trees, large grassy areas, and it is well signposted, an invitation to work out and to go for walks. ZooBrasília offers a unique differential compared to the those of the other foreign zoos: it permits visitors to travel its entire extension by car. That is 1�9.7� hectares [���.18 acres] of the area of 728.86 hectares [1,800.28 acres] owned by Fundação Pólo Ecológico de Brasilia, its maintainer. It is home to 1,�00 animals, a total of 2�� species living in spaces that try to reproduce their natural habitat. Although it has exotic animals, the majority of the collection represent South American fauna, especially that of the Brazilian cerrado.

Jardim Botânico

Botanical Gardens

Located at QI 2� of Lago Sul, it guaranties a beautiful walk for those who value nature. It contains plant species native to the cerrado and endangered animal species live in its � thousand hectares, the size making it the largest such area in the world. It also has a medicinal plant garden, with 100 species of native herbs, a research information center, panoramic view location, ecological path, amphitheater, orchid garden, and a � thousand meter long track for walks or jogging.

Criado em 19�9 como moldura do Plano Piloto de Brasília, ao qual daria graça e ainda mais beleza, o Lago Paranoá é considerado ideal para a realização de eventos náuticos por sua largura, comprimento, tipo de margens, posicionamento e regime de ventos — e ainda pela infra-estrutura para grandes espetáculos, como proximidade urbana, telecomunicações e hotelaria. Sua extensão apresenta índice de balneabilidade (águas próprias para banho) de 93% do total dos 38 quilômetros quadrados — o que corresponde a �,7 mil campos de futebol — e 600 milhões de metros cúbicos de água. O contorno soma 84 quilômetros e o acesso à orla é livre, garantido por lei.

Essas águas foram recuperadas na década de 90, por uma série de ações públicas destinadas à preservação do ambiente aquático. Desde então, merecem absoluta atenção oficial. A visibilidade hoje alcança 3 metros. Ao redor dele, existem �0 clubes, que geram cerca de 10 mil empregos diretos e onde é possível praticar esportes, como vela e esqui aquático.

Passa de 6 mil o número de embarcações registradas — ou seja, Brasília é dona da terceira maior frota do País, superada apenas pelas do Rio e de São Paulo. Os investimentos já realizados na orla do Lago fazem dele um emergente pólo econômico, com muitas oportunidades de negócios: o parque aquático Bay Park (R$ 12 milhões), o Pontão (R$ 19 milhões), o Pier 21 (R$ �� milhões) e o Complexo Alvorada (R$ 1�� milhões).

Created in 19�9 as a framework of Brasilia’s Pilot Plan, to which it would add grace and even more beauty, Paranoá Lake is considered an ideal place to hold nautical events due to its width, length, type of banks, positioning and wind system– and also for the infrastructure it has for big spectacles, such as proximity to the city, telecommunications and hotel network. Its area shows an index of special bathing waters of 9�% of the total �8 square kilometers [1�.2 square miles]– which corresponds to 5.7 thousand soccer fields – and 600 million cubic meters of water. The border totals 8� km and access to the shore is free, guaranteed by law.

These waters were recovered in the 1990s by a series of public actions filed to preserve the aquatic environment. They have since deserved absolute official attention. Visibility currently reaches � meters [9.9 feet]. Surrounding it there are now �0 clubs which produce some 10 thousand direct jobs and wherever it is possible to practice sports, such as sailing and water skiing.

The number of registered boats exceeds 6 thousand– i.e. Brasilia has the largest fleet in Brazil, surpassed only by those in Rio and São Paulo. Investments already made into the Lake’s shoreline make it an emerging economic complex, with many business opportunities: the aquatic park, Bay Park (R$ 12 million), Pontão (R$ 19 million), Pier 21 (R$ �� million) and Complexo Alvorada (R$ 1�� million).

Cada vez mais limpo, o Lago Paranoá começou a despertar o interesse dos praticantes de mergulho, que encontram nas suas águas um ponto ainda pouco explorado: os vestígios da construção de Brasília, que vão de objetos de valor a uma antiga vila de pioneiros, a Vila Amauri, encoberta quando o espelho d’água atingiu seu nível ideal. Fica no rumo da Vila Planalto, a cerca de 100 metros dali, em linha reta, na direção da Ponte JK.

As águas são próprias para banho, recreação, esporte, turismo, regatas, competições, passeios (diurnos e noturnos), pesca amadora, windsurfe e vela. Tem ainda um sem-número de outras programações, como a Procissão Náutica Dom Bosco, a Corrida das Pontes e até competições extravagantes, como medir quem consegue passar maior tempo nas águas.

Com o florescer de novos negócios, foram instalados o restaurante flutuante L’Isola; o Cozinha Brasil (self service no Clube do Congresso onde se pode chegar de barco que sai da Concha Acústica), o bar Digão, que funciona próximo à Barragem do Paranoá, e até um motel flutuante, batizado de Barco do Amor.

The increasingly cleaner Paranoá Lake has started to draw the interest of divers, who find its little explored waters interesting. They have explored vestiges of Brasilia’s construction, ranging from objects of value to an old pioneer village, Vila Amauri, covered when the water surface reached its ideal level. It is on the way to Vila Planalto, some 100 meters from there in a straight line towards the JK Bridge.

The waters are appropriate for bathing, recreation, sports, tourism, boat races, and even radical competitions, boat rides (day and night), amateur fishing, windsurf and sailing. It also has countess programs available such as The Dom Bosco Nautical Procession, The Bridges Race and even extravagant competition, such as timing who spends the most time under water.

With the flourishing of new businesses the floating restaurant L’Isola, Cozinha Brasil (self service in the Congress Club, which one can reach by a boat that leaves from Concha Acústica), the bar Digão, which operates next to the Paranoá Dam and even a floating motel, named Barco do Amor (Loveboat) were built.

Este é um segmento que não pára de crescer no DF e adjacências: beira já uma centena o número de propriedades que oferecem opções de lazer e descanso. E algumas tão bonitas e aconchegantes quanto as existentes em outras cidades brasileiras, com história, também, como as de Planaltina, cidade que tem tudo a ver com a criação de Brasília. Ou as próximas das Águas Emendadas, reserva natural em cujo território nascem rios que correm para as mais importantes bacias hidrográficas brasileiras.

Todavia, algumas cidades e regiões do Estado de Goiás, localizadas num raio de 200 quilômetros de Brasília, costumam também ganhar a preferência dos que procuram destinos originais e interessantes. Pirenópolis é uma delas. Todavia, Alto Paraíso, na Chapada dos Veadeiros, com suas dezenas de cachoeiras e uma natureza exuberante — caso do Vale da Lua, por exemplo —, são igualmente muito visitadas por brasileiros e estrangeiros interessados em turismo de natureza e ecologia. É um excelente programa para pré e pós-eventos.

Há quem opte pelas águas quentes de Caldas Novas. Nesse caso, o deslocamento equivale a �0� km. O acesso a todos esses lugares se dá por estradas com excelentes condições de conservação e infra-estrutura de apoio. Ao redor do DF, existem haras, hotéis-fazendas, parques ecológicos, pesque-pague e dezenas de cachoeiras — como Salto de Itiquira, Salto de Corumbá, Salto do Tororó, Poço Azul, Pipiripau, Colorado, Mumunhas, Saia Velha, Topázios, todas com infra-estrutura para receber turistas e visitantes. Algumas são adequadas para a prática de esportes radicais.

This is a segment that does not stop growing in the Federal District and its surrounding areas: the number of properties that offer leisure and rest options has already reached one hundred. Some are as beautiful and cozy as those in other Brazilian cities, also with history, like those: in Planaltina, a city that played a big role in the creation of Brasilia; and those near Águas Emendadas, a natural reserve in whose territory rivers spring that flow to the most important Brazilian water basins.

However, some cities and regions of the state of Goiás, located within a200 kilometer radius from Brasilia, also gain preference by those who seek original and interesting destinations. Pirenópolis is one of them. However, Alto Paraíso, in Chapada dos Veadeiros, with its dozens of waterfalls and exuberant nature – which is the case of Vale da Lua (Moon Valley), for example – are equally very frequently visited by Brazilians and foreigners interested in nature and ecology tourism. It is an excellent option for before and after events.

There are those who choose the hot waters of Caldas Novas. In this event, the displacement equals �0� km. Access to all of these places is by roads that are in excellent conservation conditions and have support infrastructure. Surrounding the DF, there are studfarms, farm-hotels, ecological parks, fish and pay and dozens of waterfalls – such as the Salto de Itiquira, Salto de Corumbá, Salto do Tororó, Poço Azul, Pipiripau, Colorado, Mumunhas, Saia Velha, Topázios, all with reception infrastructure for tourists and visitors. Um mercado altamente receptivo a novidades e, em contrapartida, muito exigente, acabou transformando Brasília num pólo de gastronomia dos mais importantes do País, principalmente pela diversidade dos produtos disponíveis nos cerca de �00 estabelecimentos existentes no Plano Piloto, número que inclui, entre outros restaurantes, bares, cafés, pizzarias, churrascarias, confeitarias, creperias e fast foods. Já o Distrito Federal, conta com mais de 7 mil estabelecimentos, somando-se aí também os restaurantes rurais, como o Trem da Serra, premiado pela Feira Internacional de Turismo (Fitur), de Madri, e o original Florida, que serve café colonial típico, ambos distantes cerca de �0 km do centro da cidade.

Alguns restaurantes de Brasília somam a tradição e a qualidade da boa comida com manifestações culturais, servindo de cenário para tardes e noites de autógrafos, apresentação de poetas e atores, vernissages, lançamentos de bebida. Outros, pela freqüência com que recebem alguns clientes, acabam fazendo história. É o caso do Piantella, que manteve reservada, no mezanino, uma mesa para o falecido deputado Ulysses Guimarães e os próceres do PMDB — embora o salão continue tão democrático hoje como foi no passado, pois é lugar muito freqüentado pelos políticos de todos os partidos e também por autoridades, ministros e personalidades. E o Bar Brasília, que continua o predileto do PT, mesmo depois de o partido vencer as eleições. Até jornalistas têm seus redutos preferidos.

This is a market that is highly receptive to novelties and, on the other hand, very demanding. This resulted in the transformation of Brasilia into a gastronomic center among the most important in the Country, especially due to the diversity of products available in the some �00 establishments existing in the Pilot Plan, a number that includes, among others, restaurants, bars, cafés, pizzerias, barbecue restaurants, pastry stores, creperies and fast food stores. However, the Federal District has more than 7 thousand food and drink establishments, which also include rural restaurants, such as Trem da Serra, awarded at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), in Madrid, and the original Florida, which serves typical colonial coffee, both at a distance of some �0 km from the city center.

Some restaurants in Brasilia join tradition and quality of good food to cultural manifestations, serving as venues for afternoon and evening autograph signing, poetry and literature readings, art exhibit openings, launching beverages. Others have made history by the frequently they received some clients. This is the case of Piantella, which always kept a table reserved for the deceased Deputy Ulysses Guimarães and the influential leaders of the PMDB parry– although the place is still as democratic today as it was in the past, because politicians of all parties and also by authorities, ministers and celebrities it is much frequented by politicians of all parties, authorities, ministers and celebrities continue the tradition. There is also the Bar Brasilia, which continues to be the Brazilian Workers Party’s favorite, even after the party was voted into office. Even journalists have their favorite strongholds.

Assim como a sociedade local valoriza mais quem é citado sempre nas colunas dos jornais porque almoçou, jantou, participou de happy hour, momentos de degustação, coquetéis e outros acontecimentos realizados nesse ou naquele bar e restaurante. Todos esses fatores, juntos, foram responsáveis por desenvolver o segmento da gastronomia da cidade, que conta até com ruas praticamente só de restaurantes.

Casas especializadas em pratos da cozinha nacional e internacional, prontas para atender ao paladar mais sofisticado e exigente, dividem a preferência da clientela com restaurantes italianos, japoneses, mexicanos, portugueses, árabes, chineses, espanhóis, franceses e alemães. Além disso, existem restaurantes especializados em frutos do mar ou carnes com cortes especiais, bem como um ou outro menos comum ao paladar brasileiro. E o setor não pára de crescer, pois os empresários encontram boas razões para investir no mercado brasiliense, farto de consumidor exigente e de alto poder aquisitivo.

In a city that breathes power, it is only natural that big economic, political-party agreements and lobbyist actions unfold at the tables of the most crowded establishments. It is also the one with the most varied number of designer shops and famous brands, found in the large shopping centers of Brazil’s capitals. Fixada no Guará II há mais de 30 anos, a feira tem tradição no setor de confecção de roupas, sapatos, complementos e bijuterias, além de verduras, frutas, queijos, doces, feijão-de-corda, feijão-verde, farinha d’água, pastel, cachaça, peixes, aves, raízes, temperos e, ainda, comida típica – como tacacá, sarapatel e buchada de bode. Recebe um fluxo semanal de 30 mil pessoas, entre habitantes do DF, do Entorno e turistas. Funciona de quarta-feira a domingo, inclusive feriados, com entrada franca. Informações: 382-2�2�.

FEIRA DE ARTESAnATO DA TORRE DE TV

Com quase �0 anos de existência, a feira de artesanato da Torre de TV é uma das paradas obrigatórias para o turista que vem a Brasília. De pastel com caldo-de-cana a bijuterias feitas com pedras, bordado, artesanato em palha, barro, madeira, telas coloridas e móveis por encomenda, é possível encontrar de tudo entre as �22 barracas em funcionamento. A Associação dos Expositores, Artesãos, Artistas Plásticos e Manipuladores de Alimentos da Feira da Torre (Asseapma) calcula que cerca de �0 mil pessoas circulem por lá a cada mês. GUARÁ FAIR

Set at Guará II for over �0 years, this fair is traditional due to its manufactured clothing, shoes, complements and jewelry, in addition to vegetables, fruit, cheese, sweets, feijão-de-corda (string beans), feijão-verde (green beans), farinha d’água (water flour), the Brazilian empanada, called pastel, cachaça (Brazilian sugar cane rum), fish, roots, spices, and, furthermore, typical cuisine – such as tacacá, sarapatel e buchada de bode. It receives a weekly flow of 30 thousand people, among the inhabitants of DF, its surrounding areas and tourists. It operates from Wednesday to Sunday, including Holidays, and entrance is free. TV TOWER CRAFTS FAIR

Almost 40 years of age, the TV Tower Crafts Fair is one of the mandatory visits for the tourist coming to Brasilia. From pastel with sugar cane juice to jewelry made from stones, embroidery; straw, clay and wood handcrafts, colored screens and furniture by order, it is possible to find all you want among the �22 stands. The Association of Exhibitors, Craftsmen , Plastic Artists and Food Handlers at the Tower Fair (Asseapma) have calculated that about 40 thousand people visit monthly. Criada em 1997, é uma feira com 2.080 lojas de produtos nacionais e importados no segmento de computação e eletro-eletrônicos. Também oferece artesanato, alimentação, vestuário, produtos country, brinquedos, tapeçaria, decoração, bebidas e equipamentos completos para pesca, inclusive isca viva. A Feira dos Importados é o segundo lugar mais visitado de Brasília. Recebe em média 80 mil pessoas por dia nos fins de semana. Em 200�, passou por uma reforma completa das instalações, que ganharam cobertura nova, banheiros e um acesso organizado e mais confortável para comerciantes e usuários, além de total sinalização em caminhos e bancas. Founded in 1997, this fair has 2,080 stores selling domestic and imported products from the computing and electrical-electronic segment. The Imported Goods Fair is the second most visited site in Brasilia, receiving an average of 80 thousand people per day on weekends. Em toda a história, o Plano Piloto de Brasília é a maior área urbana declarada pela Unesco Patrimônio Cultura da Humanidade e tombada — são 112 quilômetros quadrados de área preservada por lei. Throughout history, Brasilia’s Pilot Plan has been the largest urban area declared by Unesco as World Heritage Site – the law preserves 112 square kilometers of area. In Paris, only the banks of the Seine River have been listed as a preserved area. The protected part of Venice corresponds to only six giant blocks of Lúcio Costa’s urban plan.

HEALTH

Brasilia currently has 7 thousand practicing physicians. This corresponds to one professional per �00 inhabitants. Thus, this is more than three times the number recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). This number is proof of the excellence of health sector services available in the city, although �,�00 of these doctors work only in the private health network and in their private practices.

Brasilia has the highest per capita income in Brazil, up to double the average verified in Brazil. Consequently, Thus, Brasilia lies in fourth place in the Brazilian ranking of cities with highest consumption power.

QUADRAS RESIDENCIAIS

A previsão consta do plano urbanístico: são 60 superquadras residenciais de apartamentos em cada asa (Asa Sul e Asa Norte), todas com onze blocos cada uma e prédios sobre pilotis. As superquadras populares abrigam prédios de três andares e são sempre duplas, ou seja, se estiverem completas, perfazem 22 blocos e um acesso comum. No começo, os prédios residenciais eram padronizados de tal modo que pelo número de entradas seria possível identificar também o número de quartos dos apartamentos daquele bloco. Ou seja, duas entradas para os de quatro quartos; três entradas para os de três quartos; e uma entrada única para os de dois quartos.

Todavia, nos dias atuais, a moderna arquitetura, que prevê a otimização dos espaços, a valorização do metro quadrado das construções e outros fatores econômicos priorizados, mudaram um pouco a configuração inicial. Mas nada que altere a altura dos prédios e os pilotis, por exemplo.

DISTÂNCIAS

Cada parte da avenida W�, dividida em norte e sul, mede cerca de 6 km. De uma ponta à outra das asas, são aproximadamente 1� km, já que o vão do Eixo Monumental que separa as duas perfaz mais um quilômetro.

RESIDENTIAL BLOCKS

The estimate is set down in the urban plan: there are 60 residential superblocks in each wing (South Wing and North Wing), each with eleven blocks and buildings supported by pillars. The popular superblocks host some three-story buildings and are always double, i.e., if they are complete, they total 22 blocks with common access. In the beginning, the residential buildings were standardized so that according to the number of entries, it would be possible to also identify the number of apartment rooms in that block. In other words, two entrances for buildings have four bedroom apartments; three entrances for those have three bedroom apartments; and one entrance has two bedrooms.

However, modern architecture currently provides for optimization of space, valorization of a square meter of buildings and other prioritized economic factors which have slightly changed the initial configuration. However, the height of buildings and the pillars are duly respected.

DISTANCES

Each part of Avenue W�, divided into North and South, measures approximately 6 km [3.72 miles]. From one end of the wing to the other, there are approximately 1� km [8.06], since the Monumental Axis opening, which separates the two parts, is more than one kilometer long.
