Indudablemente Manizales hoy en día es conocida en el mundo entero por su GRAN FERIA ANUAL, la cual se celebra en los primeros días del mes de enero, Dicho evento se considera como un espacio propicio para realizar las acciones de promoción del patrimonio cultural y los atractivos turísticos de la ciudad, por el alto número de turistas que convergen de diversas regiones del país y de diferentes países del mundo; En el marco de la feria se realizan eventos de gran tradición cultural como son: Reinado Internacional del Café y los desfiles de las Carretas del Rocío, de Bienvenida y de las Naciones; Temporada Taurina; Tangovia, Festival de la Trova, Festival de Bandas, Fondas y Arriería; exposiciones de arte, Exposiciones artesanales, Exposiciones gastronómicas y conciertos.

Undoubtedly Manizales today is known worldwide for their GREAT ANNUAL FAIR, which is celebrated on the first days of January. Hablar de la feria taurina, es remontarnos a los albores de la ciudad en 1848 cuando los fundadores de Manizales hacían capeas con toros traídos de la cordillera. Ya en 1898 empezaron las corridas en plazas hechas artesanalmente llamadas en ese entonces circos de toros de los cuales la ciudad llegó a tener 16 en diferentes sitios pero la principal para ese entonces estaba ubicada en el Parque Caldas donde ahora se encuentra la Iglesia de la Inmaculada, llamada CIRCO DEL GUAYABO, donde torearon figuras como José García, El Chato, Manuel Mejía etc.Para el año 1952 siendo alcalde el Dr. Arturo Jaramillo Isaza, quiso continuar las festividades del centenario de la ciudad, celebradas entre el 20 de diciembre de 1951 y el 6 de enero de 1952 festividades hechas para los manizaleños y entre estas se hicieron tres corridas para inaugurar la Plaza de Toros de Manizales donde actuaron Antonio Bienvenida, Manolo Gonzales y Alfredo Jiménez con toros de la ganadería de Mondoñedo.

Por decreto No 275 del 1ro de enero de 1952 se creó la FERIA DE MANIZALES, pero no se pudieron cumplir estas festividades hasta el año 1955.En el año 1954 el Dr. Oscar Hoyos Botero y el Dr. Roberto Cardona Arias, después de un viaje a España, trajeron la idea de hacer una feria a la usanza española como la de Sevilla, hablaron entonces con el alcalde el Dr. Mario Vélez Escobar y

HISTORIA FERIA TAURINA

por decreto se creó LA TEMPORADA TAURINA DE MANIZALES, dentro del marco de la FERIA DE MANIZALES.

La primera temporada se efectuó el 23 de enero de 1955 con el apoyo de los señores Gustavo Larrea, Carlos Hoyos Escobar, Manuel hoyos Arango, los hermanos Hernán y Ernesto Gutiérrez, Luis Congote etc. El cartel estuvo a cargo de Ángel Peralta (rejoneador), José María Martorel y Cesar girón con toros de la ganadería de Venecia.

La gente, la cultura, el sabor taurino de la ciudad ha sido por siempre una tradición, el público tiene un gran conocimiento del arte del toreo pues a esta ciudad han

venido todas las grandes figuras internacionales de cada época desde 1951 hasta nuestros días. Se han visto grandes faenas en manos de Paco Camino, Curro Romero, El Viti, Antonio Ordoñez, Luis Miguel Dominguín, El Cordobés, Enrique Ponce, El Juli, Cesar Rincón y Pepe Cáceres quien se crió en esta ciudad como torero.

Si hablamos de la cultura taurina Manizales es conocida mundialmente por los toros, además de su famoso pasodoble FERIA DE MANIZALES, escrito por el poeta Ansermeño Guillermo González Ospina y música de Juan Marí de Asis, perteneciente a la banda El Empastre. Este pasodoble se estreno el 26 de enero de 1956; Ahora por reglamento cuando la faena es de una alta calificación se premia al torero con el pasodoble FERIA DE MANIZALES.

Manizales fue pionera de las temporadas taurinas de Colombia, por eso se le conoce como la MADRE DE LAS FERIA EN AMÉRICA. El primer torero de alternativa en Colombia fue Miguel López, manizaleño nacido en 1901 y quien murió en México.

Otra de las tradiciones en esta temporada es el desfile DE LA MACARENA, homenaje que se realiza a Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Macarena, Patrona de la fiesta brava hace 50 años; desde 1998 Cormanizales, realiza el FESTIVAL TAURINO, que comienza con el desfile de la Macarena desde el Parque Fundadores para terminar en la MONUMENTAL PLAZA DE TOROS DE MANIZALES donde los espectadores rinden homenaje con faroles y velas para darle inicio a la tradional corrida en las horas de la noche.

Este desfile de lujosos carruajes alegóricos a las fiestas sevillanas, suntuosamente adornados con motivos andaluces, llevados por caballos, recorre aproximadamente cinco kilómetros por las principales calles y avenidas de la ciudad; está engalanado con las candidatas del Reinado Internacional del Café, quienes se visten a la usanza española con trajes de manola, peinetas y abanicos.
