GOAL:GOAL:To develop and deploy research infrastructure, and an To develop and deploy research infrastructure, and an associated control framework for experimentation, in associated control framework for experimentation, in Europe and Brazil, that enables experimental research Europe and Brazil, that enables experimental research
at the at the convergence point between optical and convergence point between optical and wireless networkswireless networks..

Layered nature of FUTEBOL
“End-user driven advancement of telecommunications relies on the development of the FUTEBOL converged control framework, which, in turn, requires the composition of federated research infrastructure.”
March 18, 2016 EUBrasilCloudFORUM, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 4
By the end of the project we expect...
● 3 federated optical/wireless facilities in Europe + 3 in Brazil enabled for external experimenters
● 6 non-consortium partners using the FUTEBOL research infrastructure and converged optical/wireless experimentation control framework
● 3 showcase experiments including at least 1 European and 1 Brazilian partner
● Attending ETSI technical committee meetings, meeting with ANATEL, organizing workshops with telecom operators, and so forth...

WP2: Testbed and scenario definition
● Use Case 2 – The design of optical backhaul for next-generation wireless (undergoing specification)– Extreme cell densification and data rates expected in wireless networks create unprecedented demand on the optical
backhaul
– The Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) approach embeds the wireless subsystem into the wireline network● Massive deployment of Remote Radio Heads (RRHs)● Baseband Unity (BBU) deals with the workload of signal, modulation, and protocol stack processing based on virtualization
● Challenges related to C-RAN– Very sensitive applications (e.g., low delay, low jitter, high bandwidth)
– Purpose specific virtualizable equipment requirements● Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA)● Digital Signal Processor (DSP)
– Ways to interconnect possibly distributed and heterogeneous “datacenters”● Optical backhaul, topologies, etc.

Hurdles and Obstacles
● The ability to virtualize and abstract resources and dynamically reconfigure the network violates the assumption of static allocation that many of current regulatory frameworks are built upon
● FUTEBOL intends to contribute significantly to the development of regulatory policies and standardization efforts in:– network management;
– spectrum rights issues;
– resource sharing in the telecommunications market.
● FUTEBOL consortium have already developed working relationships with national regulatory bodies throughout Europe (BNetzA, ComReg, Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board, EPRA, etc.)
● At the Brazilian side ANATEL will participate in the FUTEBOL advisory board

Kickoff Meeting
● Kickoff meeting held in Aveiro, Portugal by Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT)
● 3-day meeting (2-4 March)
● ~20 attendees
● Next F2F meeting in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil held by UFRGS in August
