dão conta, documentam e, neste caso, motivam
It is always said that Culture is so varied and possesses
so many languages. The Robinson Foundation not only
says that but actually demonstrates and realises it.
This issue no. 21 of the Publications brings a small
series of publications to an end. We hope that it will
be the first of others dedicated to the Church of the
Convent of São Francisco, located in the Robinson Space.
They are all different: they ask, respond, indicate,
document and, in this case, motivate the interest
of younger individuals, using language which is close
to them but containing precise content. This work
opens up a path to come closer, to spread knowledge,
construct a memory, make an appeal for visitable places
of learning, and which gives us great pleasure
in recording this here.

The Franciscans were friars who lived
according to the Rule of Life written down
by St. Francis of Assisi. This religious family,
which is also called the Franciscan Order or the
Order of Friars Minor, had as their ideals a life
of chastity, without material goods, poverty,
penitence, isolation and contemplation whilst
always practising charity. Initially, and in
imitation of the life of Jesus Christ, they
walked with the aim of telling Human Beings,
mainly those needing spiritual guidance,
of the joy of redemption and the love of God.
From the 13th century onwards there started
to appear the first buildings built with
the aim of sustaining a life spent in fraternity
and community – the convents.
In conventual life the brothers organized
their time around prayer, reading, helping
the more disadvantaged and manual, mainly
agricultural, work.
isolamento e contemplação praticando sempre a
caridade. Inicialmente, imitando a vida de Jesus
Cristo, caminhavam com o objectivo de comunicar
aos Homens, sobretudo a grupos espiritualmente
necessitados, as alegrias da redenção e do amor
de Deus. A partir do século xiii, começam a surgir
The Convent of São Francisco in Portalegre is one
of the oldest constructions of the city
and was one of the first houses of the Order of
the Friars Minor to be established in Portugal.
It was built in the middle of the 13th century
some hundreds of metres from the urban
defensive wall in front of the Porta de Alegrete.
The Franciscan convents became centres of
attraction for groups of the poor and infirm due to
the support they gave them and as such were not
held in regard by urban communities, and were
often relegated to living outside the urban
defensive walls, although they were almost always
located in their immediate surroundings.

The founding and building of the convent would
have been supported by donations from the
King and the people of Portalegre. The latter felt
the need for a greater spiritual presence in the
town and a support structure for the more
disadvantaged and would have been the ones who
with their alms contributed most to the building
of the convent. During its functioning various
Kings made donations to it, and as such since its
foundation it had acquired Royal Patronage.
In 1279 D. Afonso III left the convent 50 pounds
in his will.
In the 19th century, after the Civil War (1832-
1834), and within the context of the legislative
reforms undertaken by Mouzinho da Silveira
(1780-1849), all of the assets of the Religious
Orders were nationalized and their houses
disbanded through the Decree dated 30 May 1834.
According to the liberals, the Religious Orders
formed a society separated from the rest of civil
society, who wished to incorporate it with all the
citizens and equality of circumstances, to reach
the common good. When the assets were sold,
this contributed to the payment of the public
debt and the balancing of the national economy.
In this period, and after six centuries of use, the
Convent of São Francisco in Portalegre was
disbanded. The 19 friars resident there in 1834
had to leave, and either take up ecclesiastical life
or follow a secular path.

scriptorium; o refeitório; o dormitório; e as terras
edifício e a cerca com a respectiva horta. O edifício
compreendia: dormitório; 23 celas; procuração;
livraria; cárcere; adega; celeiro; cozinha; refeitório;
The spaces in the convent were distributed in
accordance with the demands of a community life:
the church with the choir; the cloisters; the
library; the scriptorium; the refectory; the
dormitory; and the cultivated lands. The 1834
inventory of the Convent of São Francisco specified
as goods the building and the defensive wall with
the corresponding vegetable garden. The building
consisted of: dormitory; 23 cells; registry;
bookshop; jail; wine cellar; barn; kitchen; refectory;
church with nine altars and the sacristy. It is still
not possible to specify the exact location of each
of the 19th century altars on the current map of
the church. Ever since it was first built, in the
alvo de várias remodelações e reconstruções,
em parte para responder às necessidades e
gostos das comunidades nas várias épocas
em que viveram. E porque a cada época
correspondem diferentes estilos artísticos, o
desafio é precisamente partir para a descoberta
dos vários elementos arquitectónicos ali
presentes.
12th century, the church of the convent of
São Francisco has been subject to various
remodelling and reconstruction, in part to
respond to the needs and tastes of its
communities at various periods throughout its
history. What is more, since every period has
different artistic styles, the challenge thus
presents itself of discovering the various
architectural elements which are present
there.

Outro
importante vestígio deste período é a cerca,
From the Gothic church, laid out in a Latin
cross with one long single nave, one can make
out the original chancel arch, a little wider
and lower than the current one; and another
two ogival arches, one which provided access
to a former chapel and another which linked the
church to the cloister. There are also two side
chapels from the chancel dating back to the
original construction of the church, which are
covered in Gothic vaulting, windows in
extremely simple ogival arches and capitals
with vegetable and geometrical decoration.
Another important remaining element of this
period is the defensive wall, which was
discovered during the archaeological excavations.
The preservation of the ancient medieval
defensive wall of the convent has enabled us
to understand, in the present day, the limits of
the city during the medieval period.
Durante o século xvi, a igreja volta
a sofrer modificações. A cobertura
do cruzeiro, que data de c. 1570-75,
configura-se em abóbada de ogiva de
desenho complexo.
During the 16th century, the church
once again underwent modifications. The
roofing of the crossing, which dates from
c. 1570-75, is configured in a Gothic vault
which has a complex design. And after the
construction of the new vaulting, a type
of decoration was adopted which simulated
building in stone – the so-called sgraffito
or stereotomy of the stone, that is,
a painted resemblance of stone which hid
the irregular filling of the masonry.
The building of a tomb also took place
during this period, where Gaspar Fragoso
is buried and who sponsored, whilst still
alive, the building of an altar to be found
there which dates from 1571.
11
a Anunciação.
igreja.
No transepto
foram instalados altares de talha, dos quais
apenas um chegou aos nossos dias. Para garantir
o reforço do edifício foram erguidas novas paredes
com novos arcos de volta perfeita. O primeiro
nunca comprometeram a função intemporal deste
antigo espaço conventual. A Igreja do Convento
For the two chapels of the nave, which are located
close to the main door of the church, it is not yet
possible to be certain of the date of their
construction. The first chapel has a Gothic vault
of complex design; its roofing and wall were
decorated with sgraffito. In one of the interior
walls there is a fresco painting from the
17th century, representing the Annunciation.
The roofing of the second chapel is a barrel vault
with a set of eight corners, all painted in shell.
The last great reforms date back to the
18th century, and these produced the current
design of the church. The original chancel was
demolished and substituted for another with
a new altarpiece. Figurative tile panelling was
placed on this new altarpiece to depict various
religious aspects, such as scenes from the life of
Saint Francis of Assisi. Engraved altars were placed
in the transept, one of which has survived to the
present day. New walls with new round arches were
erected to ensure the reinforcement of the
building. The first arch, closer to the church
entrance, on the left side, has a fresco altar, which
has now been restored. The construction of the
choir also dates from this period.
The various uses to which the former church has
been put, since its closure to worship in 1910, have
never compromised the timeless function of this
former conventual space. The Church of the
Convent of São Francisco has, since its
establishment, been a Cultural Space par
excellence.
12
VAULT (ABÓBADA) Arched covering of a space.
According to its use there can be different kinds
of vault. For example, the barrel vault, also known
as the tunnel vault, has a simple and semi-circular
form; the ogival vault, which is more complex, is
made up of a set of ribs which meet in the centre of
the vault.
MAIN ALTAR (ALTAR-MOR) Main altar of a church,
situated in the chancel.
ANNUNCIATION (ANUNCIAÇÃO) The episode
narrated in the Gospels concerning the moment in
which the Virgin Mary was visited by the Archangel
Gabriel, the Messenger, announcing that she would
shortly become the mother of Jesus.
ARCHES (ARCOS) Structures which have the
function of bearing the weight of the upper parts
of buildings. Their typology can also vary. The ogive
arch has a pointed form and is made up of two
curved segments which meet at the top; rounded
arches are simpler and form an entire semi-circle.
Besides their form and use, the designation of these
structures can vary according to their location in
buildings. For example, in a church laid out in the
form of a Latin cross, the crossing arch marks the
division between the nave and the chancel.
APSE (CABECEIRA) This is the area in a church
beyond the end of the naves and the transept. It
can be made up of a chapel, normally the chancel, or
several interconnected chapels.
CHANCEL (CAPELA-MOR) The inner part of
churches may have several chapels which are
dedicated to the worship and adoration of the
Saints, Christ, the Holy Spirit or the Virgin Mary,
for example. The chancel is the main chapel of the
church, where the main altar is situated.
e a capela-mor.
Glossário Glossary
1313
CAPITAL (CAPITEL) Upper part of a column, pillar or
pilaster used to support the entablature.
CLOISTER (CLAUSTRO) Typical part of a monastic
building formed by covered galleries one or two
storeys high, which opens out on to a garden or
patio. It is a zone of passage in the convent, as the
galleries can provide access to other areas such as
the Church, the Chapter House or the Refectory.
CHOIR (CORO) Area of the church reserved for
chanting, the location of which could vary. For
example, it was known as the high choir when it was
located at an upper level above the main porch of
the church.
CROSSING (CRUZEIRO) Part of the church between
the chancel and the nave.
SGRAFFITO (ESGRAFITO) The term sgraffito in
Italian literally means “scratch”. This wall decor
technique used layers of plaster, one lighter in
colour on top of a darker colour. Then scratching
was used to take away any unwanted plaster and
show the inner layer.
FRESCO This is a mural painting technique where the
pigments are diluted in water and applied on top of
plaster while it is still fresh. Given this, the painting
must be done quickly.
14
NAVE The area in a church reserved for the faithful,
located between the main entrance and the chancel.
Churches can have one or several naves.
ROYAL PATRONAGE (PADROADO REAL)
Patronages arise linked to individual contributions
to establishing a religious building, such as a
church, a monastery or a convent. This is designated
as royal patronage when the King contributes to the
foundation or construction of that building.
ALTARPIECE (RETÁBULO) Structure placed on top
of an altar, which may be made in various materials
such as wood, marble, stone, or mortar. Other
elements can also be included such as paintings of
sculptures
TRANSEPT A communal space, the transept is set
across the nave. Its position and relation to the nave
of the church gives the building a shape in the form
of a cross.
a capela-mor e a nave
ESGRAFITO O termo sgrafitto, em italiano, significa
literalmente “arranhado”.
deixando à vista a camada interior.
a entrada principal e a cabeceira. As igrejas podem
ter uma ou várias naves.
PADROADO REAL Os padroados surgem associados

cano. A implantação de uma ordem religiosa na
cidade de Portalegre, a importância do edifício
religioso, a sua construção, as sucessivas campa-

urbana. Queremos suscitar, a partir deste recurso
textual, outras questões ainda por aflorar, a reli-
giosidade franciscana, as vivências, o quotidiano

How to relate the story of a building? Have we
brought together all the known information about
this building? In this number of the Robinson Foun-

simple, chronological and pedagogic narrative, the
known historical data about this church and Fran-
ciscan convent. The establishing of a religious order
in the city of Portalegre, the importance of the
religious building, its construction, its successive
remodelling campaigns and its integration within
the urban framework. We wish to raise other ques-
tions, using this text as a source for other questions
still to be developed, such as Franciscan religiosity,
their living experiences, daily life in the convent,
and the relationship between these former religious
spaces and the population, which throughout the
centuries bore witness to their history.
