6) RECURSOS

Faremos uso do projetor, material

final do semestre.

a) Faça uma leitura do material sem grifar nada (só ler): você terá uma visão global dele;

a) compreender um texto lido;

b) memorizá-lo;

c) posteriormente, revê-lo.

4 Cognates and false cognates

muitas palavras neste idioma.

sentido novo, totalmente diferente. Temos então os falsos cognatos. Observe a imagem abaixo e

tente imaginar o sentido das palavras.

• actually (na verdade, na realidade, o

fato é que) • alias (pseudônimo, nome falso) • amass (acumular, juntar) • anthem (hino) • appoint (nomear, indicar) • argument (discussão, debate) • beef (carne bovina) • college (faculdade) • comprehensive (abrangente, extenso,

amplo) • compromise (entrar em acordo, fazer

concessão, acordo) • costume (fantasia) • devolve (transferir) • diversion (desvio) • eventually (finalmente, por fim) • exit (saída, sair) • fabric (tecido) • grip (agarrar algo firmemente) • idiom (expressão idiomática) • ingenious (engenhoso)

• inhabitable (habitável) • injury (ferimento) • lecture (palestra, aula) • library (biblioteca) • lunch (almoço) • mayor (prefeito) • novel (romance) • office (escritório) • parents (pais) • prejudice (preconceito) • preservative (conservante) • push (empurrar) • realize (perceber) • requirement (requisito) • retired (aposentado) • retribution (represália, punição) • scholar (erudito) • sensible (sensato) • service (atendimento) • support (appoiar, apoio) • tax (imposto)

5 Word formation (prefixes and suffixes)

Afixos

The presence of broken grains in a rice lot is an undesirable characteristic, since it decreases quality and economic value, and also leads to a reduction of the milling yield since small grains may be thrown away along with the hulls (Crusciol et al., 1999a). Grain breakage, verified during the milling process, is caused by cracks or weaker regions in the grains, and occurs especially during the hulling process and when the grains are polished (Crusciol et al., 1999b). Variety traits, inadequate crop management as well as weather conditions (temperature, humidity, and precipitation) may influence milling yield and broken-grain ratio, decreasing the product's physical quality (Chen & Kunze, 1983; Srinivas & Bhashyam, 1985).

6 Marcadores discursivos

Trecho retirado da artigo “Grain quality of upland rice cultivars in response to cropping

systems in the Brazilian tropical savanna” de Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol; Orivaldo Arf;

Rogério Peres Soratto; Gustavo Pavan Mateus

Besides representing a means of minimizing crop loss risk and improving productivity in upland ecosystems, sprinkler irrigation may also allow higher quality grains to be obtained, since the grain filling process is continuous, leading to higher head rice and threshed-grain yields, consequently reducing broken-grain yield (Oliveira, 1994), especially in years with the occurrence of hot and dry weather spells (Rodrigues, 1998; Arf et al., 2002). In addition, rice nutritional quality is also strongly influenced by the environment.

In the context of sprinkler-irrigated crop systems, information is still scarce regarding upland-rice grain-nutrient content and industrial quality. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate milling yield and protein and nutrient contents in polished grains of cultivars IAC 201 and Carajás under rainfed and sprinkler-irrigated conditions.

Abstract

KLUTHCOUSKI, João et al. Yield of soybean, corn, common bean and rice under no-tillage management. Sci. agric. [online]. 2000, vol.57, n.1, pp. 97-104. ISSN 0103-9016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0103-90162000000100016.

The no-tillage cropping system is widely adopted in the Brazilian savannah region (cerrado). However, the continuous use of this system under tropical conditions with insufficient mulching and successive superficial fertilizations, can alter soil chemical and physical properties, causing problems of soil compaction and excessive accumulation of nutrients in the soil surface layer, decreasing the yield potential. The present study had as main objective to verify the effect of four systems (no tillage; heavy harrowing; deep chiseling and deep moldboard plowing) of soil management associated with three levels of phosphorus and potassium fertilization (no fertilizer application, recommended fertilization, reposition of nutrients removed by grains) on the yield of corn, soybean, bean and rice crops in area submitted to eight years of no-tillage. The experiments of corn, soybean, upland rice and bean were conducted using a randomized complete block design, in strip plots with four replications on a Oxisol of high fertility. Soil management or fertility did not affect soybean yield while moldboard plowing significantly increased corn, rice and common bean yields. The bean crop also showed positive effects of phosphorus and potsassium applications.

Keywords : no-tillage; yield; corn; soybean; common bean; upland rice.

Abstract

Keywords : plantio direto; rendimento; soja; milho; arroz; feijão.

MATSUO, Éder et al. Characterization of type and genetic diversity among soybean cyst nematode differentiators. Sci. agric. (Piracicaba, Braz.) [online]. 2012, vol.69, n.2, pp. 147-151. ISSN 0103-9016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0103-90162012000200010.

The development of soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe, resistant genotypes with high yields has been one of the objectives of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) breeding programs. The objective of this study was to characterize the pathotype of soybean cyst nematodes and analyze the genetic diversity of ten differentiator lines ('Lee 74', Peking, Pickett, PI 88788, PI 90763, PI 437654, PI 209332, PI 89772, PI 548316 and 'Hartwig'). Inoculum was obtained from plants cultivated in field soil in Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Thirty-four days after inoculating each plant with 4,000 eggs, the number of females, female index, total number of eggs, number of eggs per female, reproduction factor, plant height, number of nodes, fresh and dry matter weights were assessed. The differential lines were first grouped with Scott-Knott test. Subsequently, the genetic diversity was evaluated using dendrograms, graphic analysis and the Tocher grouping method. The inoculum of H. glycines obtained from NBSGBP-UFV was characterized as HG Type 0. The differentiating lines were divergent, and PI 89772, PI 437654, 'Hartwig' and 'Peking' had the greatest potential for use in breeding programs.

Keywords : Glycine max; Heterodera glycines; soybean breeding; resistant cultivars.

Abstract

OLIVEIRA, MILSON LOPES DE et al. Performance of a no-tillage seeder, in two soils with different types of vegetable coverages. Pesq. agropec. bras. [online]. 2000, vol.35, n.7, pp. 1455-1463. ISSN 0100-204X. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0100-204X2000000700021.

The performance of a no-tillage seeder, version soybean and corn was evaluated under two classes of soil, a cambic Red-Yellow Podzolic terrace phase and a Red-Yellow Latosol, at Zona da Mata, MG. The machine was tested under three different vegetable coverages in two work speeds. During test, tractor and planter slipping, fuel consumption and the power required by the machine, distribution fertilizer, and seeds damage were evaluated. After planting, the number of seeds by hectare, final stand, planting depth and seed longitudinal distribution, were also evaluated. The uniformity of longitudinal distribution was measured for percentage of admissible spacing, pair distribution, failures on distribution and by coefficient variation of seed spacing. The demand of power was higher on podzolic, due to its higher density and resistance to penetration. Regardless of the type of treatment, the number of seeds distributed and the final stand obtained showed no significant difference and the depth average obtained in the test was close to the values foreseen in the control. The seeds distributed were not affected by dosage mechanism. The analysis of variance indicated no significant variation between the values of admissible spacing, the pair distribution and failures.

Keywords : mechanization; equipment testing; equipment performance; agricultural machinery.

ABSTRACT

Despite a large availability of areas suitable for sunflower cropping in Central Brazil, few adapted cultivars are available in the market. The objective of this work was to select sunflower cultivars adapted to this important production region. Experimental data from 2000 to 2004 were obtained by the National Sunflower Trials, coordinated by Embrapa Soja. The evaluated traits were grain and oil yields. Two criteria were used for selection of cultivars: i) the general mean obtained from different environments; ii) partitioning of general mean in favorable and unfavorable environments. Partitioning of the general mean allowed to detect the specific environment indicated for each cultivar. For grain yield, the cultivar Helio 251 presented general indication, Milênio and CF 17 could be indicated for favorable environments and ACA 884, ACA 885 and ACA 872 for the unfavorable ones. For oil yield, CF 13, Milênio, DK 4030, Helio 250 and ACA 872 had general indication; AG 966, GH 12, GV 26043, CF 17 and VDH 93 could be indicated for favorable environments, while VDH 488, Helio 251, ACA 884 and ACA 885 for the unfavorable conditions. In 2002, the partition of the general mean was not carried out. In this year, general mean of cultivars Exp 37, AG 962, GV 26048 and AG 967 were overweight the controls for grain yield and the cultivars AG 962, AG 967, GV 26048, AG 972, BRS 191, Guarani were overweight the controls for oil yield.

INTRODUCTION

There is an increasing utilization of sunflower in Brazil, due to its use as raw material for silage, oil production and to its potential as a new source of energy from the biological fuel production. Therefore, grown area and grain production increased 60 and 47%, respectively, between 2002/2003 and 2004/2005 (Reunião, 2005). Most of the 82.000 ha cultivated in 2004/2005 were sowed in Central Brazil, following to the major summer growing period, mainly in the States of São Paulo (36.7%), Mato Grosso (17.4%), Goiás (10.2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (8.8%) (Reunião, 2005).

On some Brazilian States it is a common agricultural practice the summer double cropping, meaning that the main crop is planted from October to early November, allowing its harvesting by February. Then a second crop follows in February/March, taking advantage of the adequate temperature and rainfall conditions. Sunflower is one of the crops suitable as the second summer crop.

The expansion of the sunflower crop as the second summer crop in Brazil depends on a constant evaluation of new cultivars obtained by the identification of superior materials able to express high yield and acceptable quality in the different regions. Thus the genetic progress of sunflower in Brazil plays an important role to make more feasible the necessary economic returns compared to other summer crops.

Since 1989, the evaluation and selection of hybrids and varieties of sunflower from several companies are being made through of the National Sunflower Trials, coordinated by Embrapa Soja and supported by the contribution of public and private institutions. The aim of this work was to select sunflower cultivars evaluated in the Trial Network carried out between 2000 and 2004 in Central Brazil.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Data were used from the National Sunflower Trials, coordinated by Embrapa Soja. Trials were installed from 2000 to 2004 in several locations of the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Distrito Federal (Table 1).

The cultivars were sown in February/March, in randomized block designs with four replicates. Each plot consisted of four rows 6.0 m long, spaced from 0.7 to 0.9 m. Only the two central rows were used for data collection. Plants located until 0.5 m apart from the tip of each central row were also discarded, resulting in a useful area from 7 to 9 m2 per plot, depending on the space adopted. All the recommended cultural practices were observed to allow an optimum plant development.

The evaluated cultivars were simple and triple hybrids and open pollinated varieties developed by the companies ADVANTA, CATI, DOW AgroSciences, Embrapa Soja, La Tijereta and HELIANTHUS DO BRASIL. Commercial hybrids M 734 (DOW AgroSciences) and Agrobel 960 (La Tijereta) were used as controls. In 2001, only the hybrid M734 was used as control. The evaluated traits were grain and oil yields. Cultivar evaluation was carried out during two years in the Final Trials of the First Year of Evaluation (FTF) and in Final Trials of the Second Year of Evaluation (FTS) (Table 1). From 2001 to 2004, eleven, fifteen, ten and six cultivars were evaluated. Evaluations made in 2001, include the experimental data obtained from the Final Trials of First Year of Evaluation 2000 and from the Final Trials of Second Year of Evaluation 2001, with similar procedure for other years of evaluation.

The analysis of variance was performed on grain and oil yields for each environment (location and year). As the locations of the trials included in the FTF were not exactly the same ones as those chosen for the FTS, a joint analysis of environment for each group of cultivars was carried out. For this, a test to verify the homogeneity of residual variances was applied. In this test, variances were considered as homogeneous when the ratio between the larger and the smaller residual mean square was smaller than 7 (Pimentel Gomes, 1985). Moreover, trials with coefficients of variation higher than 20% (Pimentel Gomes, 1985) and experiments with major problems (birds attacks, drought and serious incidence of plant diseases, like Alternaria) were not included in the joint analysis of variance.

Two criteria were used for selection of cultivars: i) the general mean obtained from different environments; and ii) partitioning of general mean in favorable and unfavorable environments. It was considered favorable environment those with superior general mean and unfavorable one those with inferior general mean (Verma et al., 1978).

In the analysis of the general mean, Duncan test (P < 0.05) was performed to verify significance of differences among cultivars, as well as the comparison of means among each evaluated cultivar and the controls. The favorable and unfavorable environment means of each cultivar were compared with the control mean in each environment, according to the IDMG method (Indication Method - Partitioning of General Mean) (Porto et al., 2007). When the mean of a certain cultivar is higher than the control mean in favorable but not in unfavorable environments, this cultivar is regarded oneself as fitted for favorable environments, and vice versa. On the other hand, if a certain cultivar is superior in both environments, its indication is general. The partitioning of the general mean was not calculated when the number of favorable and unfavorable environments was equal or less than three. The statistical analyses were performed with the software Genes (Cruz, 2001).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The interaction cultivars × environments was significant in the joint analysis of variance, indicating a different performance of cultivars over the evaluated environments, and pointing

Page 37: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

37

out the importance of studies of yield components in specific environments (Table 2). The presence of G × E interaction in sunflower yield tests has also been reported by Embrapa (1996; 1997; 1998; 1999; 2000); Lu'Quez et al. (2002) and De la Vega & Chapman (2006). The experimental accuracy was satisfactory according the classification of Pimentel Gomes (1985), since the coefficients of variation (CV) were comprised between 11.83% and 14.33% for grain yield and between 12.23% and 14.51% for oil yield. General means for grain yield over year were remarkable superior to the approximately 1500 kg ha-1, observed in Brazilian commercial agriculture, according to data from CONAB (2005).

In spite of the acceptable values of CV, differences among cultivars were detected by Duncan test (P < 0.05) only when a large difference among their means was observed for both evaluated traits (Table 3), as reported by Embrapa (1996; 1997; 1998; 1999; 2000). Therefore selection of sunflower cultivars was made based on the difference between their performance and the mean of controls, so that selected materials were those with means higher than that of controls. This criterion is rigorous whereas it causes a greater strictness in discriminating cultivars in comparison with selection based on results from the Duncan test, therefore it reduces the number of selected cultivars. Despite this constraint, this criterion has been used by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) for the registration of new soybean, wheat and bean cultivars. No criterion was established for sunflower up to now.

In the period of 2000-2004, the cultivars that presented a general mean higher than the controls for grain yield were Exp 37, AG 962, GV 26048, AG 967, Helio 251 and ACA 884. For oil yield, the best cultivars were CF 13, Milênio, DK 4030, AG 966, GH 12, AG 962, AG 967, GV 26048, AG 972, BRS 191, Guarani, Helio 250, Helio 251 and ACA 872. Only cultivars AG 962, AG 967, GV 26048 and Helio 251 presented a better performance for the two evaluated components of yield (Table 3). Thus, cultivars not always had a good performance for both traits. The use of cultivars with outstanding performance in only one of the evaluated components depends on the farmer preference at the time of choice a hybrid variety and also must be based on the effective politics of trade by the sunflower industry. Currently, industries grant a bonus for cultivars whose oil content is above 40%. When the bonus is paid, farmers prefer hybrids with higher oil content then those with higher grain yield.

From 2000 to 2004, the National Sunflower Trials evaluated simple and triple hybrids and open pollinated varieties. In this period, no open pollinated variety was greater than the control mean (Table 3). These values varied from 3.3% (IAC Uruguai in 2002) to 23.3% (Embrapa 122 in 2004) for grain yield and from 18.2% (Catissol in 2004) to 24.0% (Embrapa 122 in 2004). Nevertheless, the use of open pollinated varieties may be meaningful for the farmholders, due to low seed price and less environmental risk (water deficit), when sunflower crop is sown on February/March.

For selection of sunflower cultivars normally used general means of grain and oil content from different environments (Embrapa, 1996; 1997; 1998; 1999; 2000). Although it should be taken into account the specific adaptation of the favorable and unfavorable environments (Ramalho et al., 1993; Cruz & Regazzi, 1994; Lu'Quez et al., 2002; De la Vega & Chapman, 2006). In this study, the method of the IDMG allowed to detecting cultivars for a specific environment (Table 4). For grain yield, only the cultivar Helio 251 had general indication. Milênio and CF 17 would be indicated for favorable environments and ACA 884, ACA 885 and ACA 872 for the unfavorable ones. For oil yield, CF 13, Milênio, DK 4030, Helio 250 and ACA 872 had general indication; AG 966, GH 12, GV 26043, CF 17 and VDH 93 would be indicated for favorable environments, while VDH 488, Helio 251, ACA 884 and ACA 885 for the unfavorable conditions. The IDMG analysis was not performed in 2002, because in those experiments the number of favorable environments was less than four. Some cultivars that did not present a superior average in comparison with the controls had good performance in specific environments. For instance, cultivar ACA 885 was indicated for unfavorable

Page 38: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

38

environments for grain and oil yields (Table 4), although its general average was smaller than one of the controls.

CONCLUSIONS

For grain yield, the cultivar Helio 251 presents general indication, Milênio and CF 17 would be recommended for favorable environments and ACA 884, ACA 885 and ACA 872 would be indicated for the unfavorable environments when sowed on February/March. For oil yield, CF 13, Milênio, DK 4030, Helio 250 and ACA 872 present general indication; AG 966, GH 12, GV 26043, CF 17 and VDH 93 would be indicated for favorable environments, while VDH 488, Helio 251, ACA 884 and ACA 885 would be indicated for the unfavorable ones, when sowed at the same date.

ABSTRACT

The industrial quality of grain is an important parameter to determine the commercial value of rice and can be influenced by water availability and type of cultivar. The present study aimed to evaluate the milling yield as well as the protein and nutrient contents of polished grains originated from two upland rice cultivars grown under rainfed and sprinkler-irrigated conditions. A randomized block design was used in a split-plot arrangement with eight replicates. Plots consisted of two cropping systems (rainfed and sprinkler-irrigated) with subplots consisting of two cultivars recommended for upland ecosystems (IAC 201 and Carajás). The sprinkler irrigation system increased upland rice milling (8.0%) and head rice yield (23.7%), for years with hot and dry weather spells

occurring during the reproductive and maturation stages. Under conditions of lower water availability, the Carajás cultivar showed a milled yield value 5.1% higher than that of cultivar IAC 201. Lower water availability provided increases in protein, N, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn contents but reductions in S and Cu in the polished grains. Cultivars IAC 201 and Carajás had similar nutrient contents in the polished grains.

INTRODUCTION

In addition to low yield, upland rice grown un der the dryland system in general presents lower grain quality when compared to grains originating from lowland systems. A major reason for this, aside from causes due to genetic variability, is the frequent periods of water deficiency the plant is exposed to during the cycle, in highly productive regions (Crusciol et al., 1999b).

Page 42: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

42

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This work was performed under field and laboratory conditions, where grains from experiments carried out in field conditions were used, in the cropping seasons of 1994/95 and 1995/96 in Selvíria State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil (51º22' W, 20º22' S, at altitude 335 m). The chemical characteristics of the clayey-textured Typic Haplustox at the experiment site (Table 1) were established before the experiment, ac cording to the methodology proposed by Raij & Quaggio (1983). The mean annual rain precipitation is 1,370 mm, the mean annual temperature is 23.5ºC and the relative air humidity ranges from 70 to 80%.

A randomized complete block design, in a split-plot scheme and eight replications was used. Plots consisted of two cultivation systems (rainfed and sprinkler-irrigated) with subplots consisting of two cultivars recommended for upland ecosystems (IAC 201 and Carajás). The distance between plots was 8 m. Each subplot consisted of six rows of plants, six meter length, spaced 0.40 m between rows. Only the four central rows were usable areas, whereas 0.50 m of the edge of each row of plants and the two outer rows were considered border.

IAC 201 cultivar in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul presents the following primary characteristics: medium size, precocious cycle, long and slender grain type, translucent and high-yield whole grains in milling with an insignificant chalk and outstanding culinary qualities. Carajás cultivar shows size and cycle similar to IAC 201 cultivar, although it shows better plant architecture, higher finishing and water deficiency tolerance and long grain type (Bazoni et al., 1995).

During the experiment, the minimum and maximum air temperatures were daily determined at the weather station, 500 m distant from the experimental location. The rainfall was determined with a Ville de Paris raingange installed at the center of the

Page 43: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

experimental area. Weather elements are shown in Figure 1. In order to establish treatments under sprinkler irrigation, the available water capacity (AWC), in mm was determined by the following equation: AWC=[(FC-WPP)/100].d.h, where FC is the field capacity (%); WPP is the wilt permanent point (%); d is the soil density (1,250 kg m-3); h is the rooting effective depth (0.20 m). In this way, the employed AWC of the soil was established as 14.80 mm.

In sprinkler-irrigated treatments, the water supply was conveyed by a fixed conventional sprinkler system, with outflow of 3.3 mm hour-1. The irrigations were performed every time the crop maximum evapotranspiration (ETm) reached 8.25 mm, in other words, 45% of the AWC. The ETm was estimated from the equation: ETm = Kc.ETo; where ETm = crop's maximum evapotranspiration (mm day-1), ETo = reference evapotranspiration (mm day-1) and Kc = crop coefficient.

The water evaporation (mm) was daily obtained from a Class A pan. The Class A pan coefficient (Kp) was the one proposed by Doorenbos & Pruitt (1976), calculated according to the surrounding area, wind speed and relative humidity. Different Kc values were employed in the different crop development periods, according to Reichardt (1987): 0.4 for the period between the emergence and 30 days before flowering; 0.7 for the period from 30 to 19 days before flowering; 1.0 between 19 and 11 days before flowering; 1.3 for the

Page 44: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

44

period 11 to three days before flowering; 1.0 for the period from three days to five days after flowering; and 0.7 for the period between five and 12 days after flowering. The amount and distribution of the water received by the rice crop are shown in Table 2.

Soil was tilled and two leveling disks employed, the first one soon after the soil tilling and the second shortly before the sowing. The mineral fertilization, during the two cropping seasons, was made by applying into the sowing furrow using 12 kg ha-1 of N, 90 kg ha-1 of P2O5, 30 kg ha

-1 of K2O (formula NPK 04-30-10) and 40 kg ha-1 of FTE BR-12 as source of nutrients (2.17% B, 9.2% Zn, 0.8% Cu, 3.82% Fe, 3.47% Mn and 0.132% Mo). Sowings were completed on 24 November 1994 and 13 November 1995, at the density of 100 viable seeds per square meter. Also 1.5 kg ha-1 of carbofuran 5G (a.i.) was added into the sowing furrow to control termites (Synterms molestus, Procorniterms striatus and Cornitermes lespesii) and elasmo caterpillars (Elasmopalpus lignosellus). The emergence of plants occurred on 02 December 1994 and 21 November 1995, respectively. Weed control was accomplished with oxadiazon (1 kg ha-1 a.i.) herbicide in the pre-emergence, one day after the sowing and 2.4D (670 g ha-1 a.i.) in the post-emergence. Nitrogen sidedressing was performed at tillering, with 30 kg ha-1 of N urea source.

When approximately 90% of panicles had grains of typical mature coloration, manual harvest was carried out. Panicles were left to dry in the sun for one or two days and later submitted to mechanical threshing in a research plot thresher.

From each subplot, one sample of 100 g of hulled rice grains was collected, and a (SUZUKI) proof mill model MT was used for 1 minute; then the polished grains were weighed and the found values were considered the milling yield percentage. Later, the polished grains were placed in a "trieur" 2 and the grains separated for 30 seconds. The grains that remained in the "trieur" were weighed to determine percentages of head rice yield and broken grains.

In 1995/96, the polished grains were dried in an oven at 105ºC, after which grains milling were ground (to pass a 40-mesh stainless steel screen) and subjected to nutrient content determinations. Nitrogen was analyzed by acid sulfuric digestion and later quantification by semi-micro-Kjeldahl method (Bataglia et al., 1983). Analyses of P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn contents were performed following to nitric-perchloric acid digestion (Bataglia et al., 1983). Polished-grain protein content was calculated by multiplying the nitrogen content by the factor 5.95.

Data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means compared by LSD (p < 0.05) test.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

During the first cropping season, milled grain yield was influenced by cropping system and cultivar as well as by the interaction between these factors (p < 0.05) (Table 3). Based on partitioned interaction observations (Table 4), it was verified that under rainfed conditions the Carajás cultivar showed a milled yield value 5.1% higher than that of cultivar IAC 201, corroborating Oliveira (1994) and Crusciol (1998), who verified a contrasting performance of those cultivars in terms of response to sprinkler irrigation. The lower tolerance to water deficit shown by the IAC 201 cultivar can be explained by the fact that this cultivar originated from a cross between cultivar IAC 165 (recommended for upland crops) and cultivar Labelle (recommended for deepwater rice crops) (Arf et al., 2002). Sprinkler irrigation provided higher milling yields in both cultivars, both during the 1994/95 cropping season and the following year, indicating that water supplied through sprinkler irrigation may have pro moted root growth, allowing better plant nutrition and grain filling, increasing milling yield, and allowing a continuous supply of water during periods when no precipitation was available (dry and hot weather spells, locally known as "veranicos"). Increased milling yields for all studied cultivars under sprinkler irrigation were also observed by Rodrigues (1998) and Arf et al. (2002).

Page 46: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

46

Head rice yield indicates the weight of whole grains obtained after industrial processing. This is one of the most important parameters in rice commercial value determination (Arf et al., 2002). There was a cropping system effect on this characteristic only in the first year of the experiment (p < 0.05) (Table 3). Sprinkler irrigation provided higher head rice yields in both cultivars. Therefore, adequate soil water availability enhances water and nutrient absorption as well as photosynthate translocation into the grains, allowing continuous grain filling and adequate development. Although water availability during the cycle was higher in the first year (Table 2), the occurrence of dry and hot weather spells, especially during the stage just before flowering and during the maturation stage (Figure 1), may have affected perfect grain development in the rainfed system, since the irrigation effect on grain development occurs, in some cases, well before that stage, promoting increased root growth and improved nutritional status, affecting grain filling dynamics. Rice chalkiness ratio and percentage of unfilled grains significantly increase when water deficits occur during the panicle emission and grain filling stages (Stermer, 1968). Well-developed grains show higher head rice yield, due to higher resistance to shocks and vibrations caused by harvest and industrial processing (Arf et al., 2002). The cultivars showed similar head rice yield values, though these may vary due to genetic characteristics (Chen & Kunze, 1983; Srinivas & Bhashyam, 1985).

Broken-grain yield was not influenced by cropping system in either experimental year (p < 0.05) (Table 3). In the 1994/95 cropping season, cultivar IAC 201 presented lower broken-grain yield, a characteristic not influenced by cultivar in the second cropping year.

The variation in rice nutritional quality is mainly due to genetic characteristics of the cultivars and key environmental factors (soil and weather), and consequently is also influenced by irrigation (water availability) (Barbosa Filho & Fonseca, 1994; Nanda & Coffman, 1979). However, the rainfed treatments provided grains with increased protein, N, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn (Table 5), which may be explained by a dilution effect, since productivity was higher for sprinkler-irrigated (3,727 kg ha-1) that in rainfed systems (2,516 kg ha-1). Crusciol et al. (2003a; b) also verified smaller contents of those nutrients and protein in the polished grains of rice in sprinkler-irrigated system. Protein contents observed in this work are smaller than reported by Angladette (1969), however, larger than verified by Castro et al. (1999).

Page 47: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

47

Sulphur and copper levels were higher for grains obtained from sprinkler-irrigated systems, probably due to the fact that such treatment provides better conditions for nutrient absorption, especially during the grain filling stage. Similar results were verified by Crusciol et al. (2003a; b).

Posphurus content in polished grains was affected by cropping system and by the interaction between cropping system and cultivar (Table 5 and 6). The rainfed treatments provided grains with higher P levels for both cultivars (Table 6). However, under rainfed conditions, cultivar IAC 201 showed increased P in grains, similarly to the Carajás cultivar in sprinkler-irrigated treatments.

Nutrient and protein contents in polished grains were similar for both cultivars, having difference only for Mn content (Table 5). The protein content average in polished grains of studied cultivars was of 80.0 g kg-1. Frei & Becker (2004), observed protein content in grains of upland rice cultivars ranging between 70 and 137 g kg-1 on a dry matter basis, with an average of 95 g kg-1, which is higher than the average of the high yielding varieties (89 g kg-1).

The higher Fe contents in grains are probably related to the soil type, which contains higher content of this element. Evaluating the polished grains of 286 genotypes of rice,

Page 48: Guia de estudos Inglês Instrumental Agronomia IFMT 2014

48

Yang et al. (1998) verified great variation in the micronutrients contents, with the medium contents varying of 4.0 to 29.5 mg kg-1 of Fe, 8.2 to 95.0 mg kg-1 of Zn, 2.5 to 143.5 mg kg-1 of Cu, and 9.0 to 30.5 mg kg-1 of Mn.

Although the cropping systems affected the levels of some nutrients, they did not disagree with regard to the nutrient content sequence found in the polished portion. On average between cropping systems, upland rice polished grains produced the following relative nutrient levels, in increasing order: N>Ca>P>S>K>Mg>Zn>Fe>Mn>Cu, for both cultivars.

CONCLUSIONS

For upland rice, sprinkler irrigation increased both milling and head rice yield, especially in years with the occurrence of moisture stress periods during the reproductive and maturation stages. Under lower water availability conditions, the Carajás cultivar presented higher milling yield as compared to cultivar IAC 201. Lower water availability promoted increased protein, N, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn levels and reduced S and Cu levels in polished grains. Cultivars IAC 201 and Carajás showed similar nutrient contents in the polished grains.

14 Vocabulário específico da área agronômica

Como aprender vocabulário?

As dicas abaixo são do site

http://www.englishtown.com.br/community/channels/article.aspx?articleName=149-vocab

Associate: Associe cores diferentes a palavras diferentes. Isto irá ajudá-lo a lembrar do vocabulário
