Problems Potentialities
WEAKNESS:
1. Historical buildings badly used, usually with archives and other inadequate uses;
2. Interactions concentrated in just one side of the square;
3. Urban furniture not inviting;
4. Impossibility of planting trees;
5. Parking lot running unconforming to the needs;
6. Lack of different connection to Sustainability Park;
7. Distance to the touristic route.
OBSTACLES:
1. Bureaucracy of municipal chamber;
2. Lack of efforts to bring tourists to the square;
3. Car speed and traffic barriers or obstacles for the good fruition of the space.

STRENGHTS:
1. Adequate to receiving big-scale events;
2. It’s airy, but protected;
3. It’s safe;
4. Got many citizen-useful services;
5. Strong history context (inside the historical center) and presence;
6. Watchful and dynamic community;

8. Privileged location and size;
9. Accessible by many ways (car, walk, bus, soft mobility);
10. Direct connection to the center of Aveiro.
OPPORTUNITIES:
1. Make agreements with police/court and underground park owners;
2. Include many civil society associations interested in the area;
3. Good neighbourhood: park, residential area, historic center;
4. Make agreement with co-creation lab and co-working;
5. Solve the conflict between government and court to release the land.

Organize a regular and integrated agenda of special (and unique) events in Praça.
● Talk with Ciclaveiro to make a periodic activity there to teach people how to ride a bike (Bike Anjo)

Too much underused space in the underground park. It is said that rarely
reaches 50% of capacity.
Surface-use with non-interative function, like parking. Lost of
oportunity (yellow in right image)
Historical buildings being used as storage to the courthouse (red).
Commerce with needs to store goods that are collective (magenta).
Make use of the underground parking to park the cars that are on the surface and
to store archives, files, and/or logistic support for commerce, services and
even residential.

Under the square is huge underground parking for the cars, but it is closed at sundays.
It will be good to change underground park opening hours to better serve the users of the square and surrounding areas.
The underground park should be open in special events occasions.

The parking area of the school is an unsuccessful use to leave kids at school. It would be less confusing and more safe by creating an “Kiss and goodbye” area by pushing the sidewalk.

The sustainability park is a very good element in the neighbourhood so there should have a direct connection to it, for eg. by extending the green elements “into” the praça.
There can be playground for kids and banks to take a rest for a while.

3 PROPOSALS OF INTERVENTION
Guidelines:
- Integrate our stakeholders and build these ideas of action collectively.- Leave a physical mark during intervention. Don’t letting it be an ephemeral and just in the day activity.- Action that can attract curious people passing by.- Action that can start processes for our longer-term interventions.

Suggest a connection from Praça Marquês de Pombal to sustainability park through the old house in ruins in Homem Cristo Filho street.

New Urban Furniture - Caramanchão
Knowing the problems of openness, aridity and lack of shadows/trees, it is possible to make the space more cozy by adding “caramanchões”, that could protect people from sun in summer, guard their backs and even be a support for climbing plants. It would be interesting for making an open workshop to teach people how to do it and make some for Praça. Recommended materials: pallet and recycled wood.
