TO THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.
In this unit you will be in contact with different genres of texts, which will
improve the reading as well as give support to several subjects.
Exploring reading, specially when teaching a foreign language, should
use texts, verbal and non-verbal ones, as a way of enhancing learning,
according to the official document (DCE, 2008, PARANÁ), which highlights that
the text is the starting point of language classes. Reading can help students to
improve their knowledge in several areas. It enables students to interact
directly with different ways of living, as well as making them informed through
different perspectives.
The tasks are designed to develop a great number of reading strategies,
such as previous knowledge activation, skimming, scanning, cognate
identification, inferences, prediction, etc. “Reading brings benefits to the
students and to the society they are part of.”Aguiar (1988, p.106)
According to Krashen´s belief in oder to learn to read, one must read.
Reading is good for language acquisition, it promotes better spelling, better
writing skills, higher reading comprehension, and more advanced vocabulary.
Reading has often been considered the foreign language skill students
retain throughout their lives. We could also remember that reading is primarily
an individual activity that the learners carry out alone.
So it is worth saying that the most successful learners make use of all
the opportunities that are offered to them. In Krashen´s axiom we can find: “
Reading is the only way of learning”.
Providing comprehensible input through the awareness of reading
strategies is the focus of this unit, equiping students with the tools that will
enable them to achieve this process.
Students must be know and should aware of all reading strategies they
can apply in the development of the texts reading.
According to the DCE of Paraná (2008, p.66) besides knowing the
reading strategies, students must understand the other´s words. Thus, it is
necessary to reconstruct the socio historical context and the stilistics and
ideological values that generated the text. The major reading aim is to bring a
world’s knowledge that allows the reader to elaborate a new way of seeing the
reality.

According to some articles women absorb the alcohol faster than men because
their bodies contains less water. The water dilutes the alcohol and so the same
amount of alcohol will produce a higher concentration in the women´s blood. In
this sense, alcoholic beverages can be more harmful to women. Everbody
knows that is not only alcohol is harmful. Smoking is another problem for
health it is responsible for 80/% of lung cancer and 25/% of all heart attacks.
According to the Canadian Lung Association, tobacco kills between 40,000-
45,000 canadian per year more than the total number deaths from AIDS, traffic

Brazilian Territory
Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, after Russia, Canada, China
and the United States. The country is located in South America, it has total area
of 8,514,876,599 sq km.(square kilometers), and contains 47% of South-
American continental area.
Brazil’s borders extend 23,086 Km., of which 7,367 Km are to the east,
on the Atlantic Ocean coast. To the north, to the west and to the south, Brazil
has boundaries with South American countries, except for Chile and Equator.
The country is divided into five geographical areas: the mid-west region, the
northeast region, the north region, the southeast region, and the south region.
The north region is the largest one, with 3,851,60 sq. Km., 45,2% of the national
territory, and just 14 million inhabitants, the second smallest population of all
regions. The southeast region has just 10,6% of the national territory, but the
biggest population, 77 million inhabitants.
Brazil has a population of about 192 million inhabitants, with an average
life expectancy about 70 years. The majority (103 million inhabitants) live in the
south and mid-regions, whose share of the national territory is only 17,4%.The
North and northeast regions are the poorest ones in the country, though they
have the largest territory, 63,4%, and have a population smaller than that of the
south and mid-west (64 million inhabitants).Such regional inequalities have
become a great problem for Brazilian administrators. (From Together volume 4, p.21)

How´s the family? How are things in Pato Branco?
We are fine. Everything is different here in Italy, but we´re trying to get used to
many things: the food, the money, and the cold. Cold! Here is so cold in the
winter! As you know, Firenze is a tourist and famous city despite the cold. My
mother and I are visiting many places: museums, beautiful churches, art
galleries, shops, parks, and squares. We can see Michel Angelo´s statuets
everywhere.
I´m so glad today. Especially because I got my first job here. And, do you
know how? Because I can speak English. Now, I´m working in a big shop as a
shop salesclerck. I sell purses to tourists from all over the world.

I am Natália, 17 years old and I study at CEEBJA because I stopped
studying last year and I need to compensate for the lost time. CEEBJA is an
excellent school. I have many friends and my teachers are excellent too. I´m
studying a lot. My family lives in Clevelândia. My father is a carpenter. He works
a lot to give us a good life.
My mother is a nurse, she works in a hospital in Pato Branco. She is a
hard worker like my father. I have two brothers: Tom is 13 years old. He studies
in a public school in Clevelandia. He likes to play video games very much. He is
very smart at school. And my older brother is Jose. He is 18 years old. He
studies engineering at UTFPR- Universidade Tecnologica Federal do Parana in
Pato Branco.
My dream is to enter a public university because my family doesn´t have
conditions to pay a private university for me. I want to have a good profession
and I think that just by studying I´ll have opportunities to get a good job. In my
opinion there isn´t any excuse for not studying anymore, because there are
many schools in our city, in Brazil, and many universities everywhere. We only
need good will to struggle because we are living in an era of information, where
everything is easy to access and learning goes through this process.( By Lourdes Parise)
