1 INTRODUÇÃO
O Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas é uma unidade da USP voltada para a
excelência acadêmica e Pesquisa científica de alta qualidade. É com a Pesquisa
científica e a busca de construir o conhecimento científico de fronteira que o ICB
estimula seus trabalhos voltados a ensino (graduação e pós-graduação) e mesmo
extensão universitária. Temos orgulho dessa postura que caracteriza nossa
contribuição para construir uma universidade e sociedade melhores. Neste sentido, os
143 docentes do ICB contribuíram com 432 publicações científicas, a grande maioria
em revistas indexadas e de abrangência internacional, e formaram 96 novos Mestres e
124 novos Doutores. Na graduação há um esforço de que todos os alunos que aqui
freqüentam (provenientes de diferentes formações) se fascinem pelo prazer da
descoberta e para isso desenvolvam projetos de pesquisa de Iniciação Científica. Há
uma preocupação clara em melhorar o desempenho não apenas em número, mas,
sobretudo, em termos de qualidade científica, na expectativa que nossos trabalhos
efetivamente contribuam com a Ciência mundial, buscando ampliar as fronteiras do
conhecimento. Ao mesmo tempo, espera-se que esse trabalho científico de qualidade
contribua com a sociedade brasileira, propiciando uma das estratégias possíveis para
transformá-la em mais justa e com oportunidades iguais para todos. Acreditamos que a
pesquisa na fronteira do conhecimento é essencial para nossa educação e para que o
país possa alcançar níveis melhores de desenvolvimento e cidadania para sua
população.

2 HISTÓRICO
2.1 A Comissão de Pesquisa no ICB
A Comissão de Pesquisa do ICB/USP foi instalada em 1989, no final da gestão
do Prof. Oswaldo Ubríaco Lopes como Diretor, sendo o Prof. Gerhard Malnic seu
primeiro presidente, que permaneceu até 1993. Foi sucedido pelos professores Luiz
R.G. Britto (1993-1995), Gláucia M. Machado Santelli (1995-1999), Vera L. G. Calich
(1999-2001), Zuleica Bruno Fortes (2001-2003), Telma Maria Tenório Zorn (2003-2006),
Ubiratan Fabres Machado (2006-2010), Marinilce Fagundes dos Santos (2010-2011) e
Carlos Frederico M. Menck (atual Presidente). Cada um dos sete departamentos do
Instituto e um representante dos alunos de pós-graduação compõem esta comissão,
contando com indispensável apoio administrativo institucional. Esta Comissão auxilia na
coordenação de projetos multidisciplinares institucionais, coordena as atividades do
Centro de Facilidades de Apoio à Pesquisa da USP (CEFAP-USP), fornece assessoria
à diretoria na administração de recursos oriundos de projetos institucionais de pesquisa,
promove e administra as atividades de pós-doutorado, os Programas de Iniciação
Científica e Pré-Iniciação Científica e de Inovação Tecnológica com bolsas financiadas
pelo Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) e pela
Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da USP e elabora o cadastro de produção científica do
Instituto. Além disso, o presidente da Comissão de Pesquisa participa do Conselho
Central de Pesquisa da Universidade e, portanto, das decisões da Universidade
concernentes às atividades de pesquisa. A critério da Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da
Universidade, participa também de diversos grupos de trabalho que têm como tema,
por exemplo, a organização de projetos institucionais envolvendo toda a universidade,

fomento à rede de biotérios, apoio e regulamentação de Núcleos virtuais de Apoio à
Pesquisa (NAPs) envolvendo pesquisadores de diferentes unidades interessados em
temas específicos, distribuição de técnicos especialistas de laboratório, etc.

3 JUSTIFICATIVA
A avaliação da produção científica do ICB é feita de modo rotineiro no ICB, e tem
propiciado conhecer basicamente a contribuição de nossos docentes, alunos e
funcionários ao conhecimento global na área Biomédica. Este anuário tem o objetivo de
sistematizar essa avaliação, propiciando uma apresentação que identifique mais
facilmente quais os pontos de sucesso, ou eventuais pontos onde podemos melhorar. A
análise anterior é identificada em vários parâmetros desse anuário, o que permite
observar a evolução dos últimos anos até o ano de 2010. Esperamos que essa
sistematização possa se repetir em próximos anos, propiciando uma base de dados
para identificarmos novos parâmetros comparativos, contribuindo assim para uma
análise, a mais fiel possível, da evolução científica deste Instituto. Nesta avaliação
foram utilizados os principais indicadores atuais de produção científica, como o número
de artigos publicados em revistas científicas indexadas, relacionando-os com o fator de
impacto das revistas nas quais foram publicados esses artigos, atividades de inovação
e tecnologia, com a relação das patentes obtidas, bolsas de produtividade do CNPq
pelos docentes, citações acumuladas e índice H. São relacionadas todas as
publicações científicas dos docentes do ICB, classificadas pelo Departamento onde
atuam, sendo que em anexo apresentamos a primeira página dos artigos científicos que
alcançaram publicação em revistas de maior impacto. Também são listados capítulos
de livro em português e artigos de divulgação, que constituem parte importante das
atividades relacionadas à pesquisa.
Certamente esses indicadores constituem apenas parte do que pode ser
avaliado para pesquisadores e pode (e deve) ser aperfeiçoado. A expectativa é que
este documento da produção do Instituto em 2010, em comparação aos últimos anos,

seja o ponto de partida para que essa avaliação seja criticamente discutida e melhorada
nos próximos anos, com acréscimo de parâmetros quantitativos e, sobretudo,
qualitativos. As formas de divulgação do documento serão várias, incluindo a digital,
através do sítio web do Instituto, porém acreditamos que a forma impressa deverá se
constituir em um excelente documento histórico para a análise posterior da evolução
desta produção. Assim, esperamos contribuir com a excelência acadêmica do ICB e
desta Universidade.

4 O ICB EM NÚMEROS
O Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas conta em 2010, com 143 docentes na
ativa, sendo 34 titulares, 40 associados e 69 doutores. Na Tabela 1 apresentamos a
distribuição dos docentes em cada Departamento. Destes 136 são docentes em
Regime de Dedicação Integral à Docência e à Pesquisa (RDIDP), e apenas 7 em outros
regimes (3 em RTC e 4 em RTP), o que por si só indica a importância da pesquisa no
Instituto. Além dos docentes na ativa, temos ainda o privilégio de contar com a
experiência de 15 Professores Aposentados, com Termos de Adesão, sendo que vários
deles ainda lideram atividades de pesquisa.

Não podemos deixar de destacar a distribuição etária dos docentes no ICB, o
que é apresentado na Figura 1. Verifica-se claramente que há um envelhecimento dos
docentes, sendo que a aposentadoria está próxima para mais de 30 desses (mesmo

considerando apenas a aposentadoria compulsória aos 70 anos), o que é preocupante.
Em uma tentativa de minimizar esse problemas, em 2010, foram contratados 4 novos
docentes, e foram realizados concursos para a contratação de 8 novos quadros que
deverão assumir em 2011. O trabalho científico relatado não poderia deixar de ocorrer
sem o apoio de 324 Funcionários, 65 (20%) de nível superior, 146 (45%) de nível médio
e 113 (35%) de nível básico.

Considerando a indissociabilidade entre a pesquisa e ensino, o ICB conta com 8
Programas de Pós Graduação, e ao fim de 2010 contávamos com um total de 777
alunos , sendo 319 inscritos no Mestrado, 147 no Doutorado Direto e 311 no Doutorado.
Durante 2010, foram concluídas 96 Dissertações de Mestrado e 124 Teses de
Doutorado. As figuras 2 e 3 apresentam a distribuição dos alunos, Dissertações e

Teses, dentro de cada programa. É importante destacar que nesse levantamento
incluímos o Programa Interunidade de Biotecnologia, que, mesmo sediado no ICB,
inclui docentes de outros Institutos.

As atividades de pesquisa de nosso Instituto, no entanto, se iniciam, na sua
grande maioria, com estágios de pesquisa ainda na Graduação. Assim, cerca de 50
alunos de graduação da USP e de outras universidades realizaram sua iniciação
científica no ICB, sendo 28 dentro do programa PIBIC do CNPq e 22 como bolsistas da
FAPESP. Outros alunos de IC também realizaram seus estágios com bolsas de outros
programas, ou mesmo como estagiários sem bolsa. Em 2010, após o lançamento do
Programa Pré-Iniciação Científica (alunos de ensino médio) pelas agências de fomento
e abraçada pela Pró-reitoria de pesquisa (em sua segunda edição), o ICB ofereceu
vagas para estágios em seus laboratórios, iniciados apenas no ano de 2011.
Além disso, o Instituto contou em 2010 com 76 pesquisadores dentro do
programa de pós-doutoramento desta universidade, que são financiados com bolsas da

FAPESP, CNPq, CAPES, FUSP ou, em alguns casos, os pesquisadores realizaram
seus estágios com vínculos empregatícios em outras instituições de pesquisa. Sete
desses pesquisadores receberam apoio como Jovens Pesquisadores (FAPESP) e
desenvolvem seus trabalhos de pesquisa de modo autônomo dentro do Instituto. As
atividades desses pós-doutorandos e pesquisadores formados têm sido extremamente
importante para o trabalho científico de nosso Instituto, contribuindo para melhorar a
produção qualificada de conhecimento em nosso Instituto.

5 BOLSISTAS PRODUTIVIDADE - CNPq
O número de docentes do Instituto com bolsas de produtividade do CNPq –
científica e tecnológica – vêm crescendo nos últimos anos. Considerando a alta
competitividade dessas bolsas e a rigorosa seleção realizada em escala nacional, com
avaliação efetuada por membros externos ao Instituto, esse indicador fornece, de um
modo geral, uma dimensão de como os docentes se destacam no país. Portanto,
devemos ressaltar sua importância e indicar que todos os docentes sejam incentivados
a pleitear sua concessão. Este parâmetro, por ser efetuado por membros externos e
respeitar as diferenças de áreas pode ser empregado, pelo Instituto, como forma de
valorização profissional para seus docentes.
Em 2010, 95 docentes (66,4% dos docentes na ativa) recebem bolsas de
produtividade científica, ou tecnológica, do CNPq, sendo 52 nível 1 e 42 nível 2. Os
docentes qualificados como nível 1 se dividem em 12- 1A, 15 – 1B, 11-1C, 14-1D, 2-
Sênior. Na Tabela 2 apresentamos a distribuição dessas Bolsas de Produtividade entre
os Departamentos do ICB.

6 PRODUÇÃO CIENTÍFICA
Durante o ano 2010, pesquisadores do Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas
participaram da autoria de 432 artigos científicos, sendo a grande maioria das
publicações em revistas que apresentam valores de fator de impacto (381, fonte JCR
2010), e, portanto, de abrangência internacional. Em 208 (54,3%) desses artigos
indexados, os pesquisadores aparecem como autores responsáveis (primeiro ou último
autor), em uma clara indicação da maturidade e inserção internacional dos grupos de
pesquisa aqui instalados. Por outro lado é importante salientar que a produção científica
como co-autores (em 45,4% desses trabalhos) também revela capacidade de
cooperação científica que deve ser valorizada. A Tabela 3 indica a distribuição de
artigos nos quais os pesquisadores do ICB aparecem como autores responsáveis em
cada Depto.

Entre os artigos científicos incluímos ainda 10 capítulos publicados em livros de
abrangência internacional, revelando o prestígio internacional de nossos docentes, uma

vez que em muitos casos foram convidados para isso. Além disso, deve-se salientar
que os docentes participaram como autores e co-autores em 39 capítulos de livros
nacionais e 20 artigos em revistas de divulgação científica no Brasil. Esses trabalhos
devem ser valorizados pela importância no país, seja ela pelo valor didático ou pela sua
capacidade de divulgação das pesquisas científicas desenvolvidas no Instituto.
A evolução da produção científica do ICB, desde o ano 2000, é apresentada na
figura 4. A figura mostra uma clara tendência de aumento na quantidade de artigos
científicos publicados na última década. Esse aumento parece ainda continuar em
2010, sendo que como pode se verificar na figura 5 há uma tendência de estabilização
de publicações em revistas não indexadas (ou que não tem fator de impacto).

Considerando-se apenas as publicações com fator de impacto, verificamos que
nos últimos 3 anos (Figura 6) há uma tendência de redução do número de publicações
em revistas com fator de impacto abaixo de 2,0, com melhoria em revistas com fator de
impacto superiores a esse valor. Verifica-se também que classicamente a maior parte
dos artigos publicados no ICB tem fator de impacto entre 2,0 e 2,9, sendo expressivo o
número de artigos publicados (77, ou 20%) com fator de impacto acima de 4,0.
Obviamente, o parâmetro de fator de impacto deve ser observado com cuidado, já que
as diferentes áreas podem apresentar fatores de impacto médios distintos, e
certamente este não é o único parâmetro de qualidade científica. Entretanto, avaliamos
que em geral esses dados podem indicar uma ligeira melhora na qualidade das
publicações do ICB. Também acreditamos que publicações com melhor fator de
impacto devem ser valorizadas, e por esse motivo, no final desse anuário divulgamos a
primeira página de todos os artigos com fator de impacto maior do que 4 publicados em
2010.

Além disso, observa-se que há uma tendência de aumento gradual no fator de
impacto médio e mediana dos artigos publicados durante os últimos 3 anos (Tabela 5),
sugerindo uma melhoria da qualidade de produção científica do Instituto. Nas figuras 7
e 8 apresentamos a análise de produção científica e de fator de impacto, em cada
Departamento.

7 PRODUÇÃO POR DOCENTE
A análise do número de artigos publicados em revistas indexadas (381) pelo
número de docentes ativos da Unidade (considerando para 2010, os 143 docentes na
ativa) revela que há uma tendência de estabilização do número que publicações pelos
docentes do ICB, com leve alta no ano de 2010 (figura 9).

Na figura 10, apresentamos a evolução da produção total por docente nos
últimos 3 anos, que aparece estável.

8 INOVAÇÃO E PRODUÇÃO DE PATENTES

Apesar de não refletir diretamente a produção científica, há uma busca nesta
universidade e no país, de processos que tenham valor biotecnológico e de inovação. A
contribuição do ICB em pesquisas voltadas à inovação tecnológica pode ser medida por
diferentes indicadores. Um dos indicadores mais empregados é, sem dúvida, o número
de pedidos de patentes depositados em agências nacionais ou internacionais. Uma
patente, por sua vez, pode ser definida como um título de propriedade temporária
outorgado pelo Estado aos inventores, sejam eles pessoas físicas ou jurídicas,
referente a uma invenção ou modelo de utilidade que lhes garanta a exclusividade no
uso econômico de sua criação. Desde a sua criação o ICB até final de 2010, registra
um total de 37 pedidos de patentes depositados no Instituto Nacional da Propriedade
Industrial (INPI). No período compreendido entre 1983 e 2007 o ICB contribui com 11%
do total de pedidos de patente depositados no INPI por unidades da USP sediadas no
campus da capital. A distribuição de pedidos de patente feitos por docentes ligados ao
ICB revela uma maior concentração nas áreas de microbiologia e imunologia que
representam juntas cerca de 70% do total de pedidos depositados no INPI. No ano de
2010 foram depositados quatro pedidos de patente no país com a participação de
docentes vinculados ao ICB na lista de inventores. Três depósitos foram feitos por
docentes do Departamento de Microbiologia enquanto que o quarto pedido foi feito por
uma docente vinculada ao Departamento de Biologia Celular e Desenvolvimento. No
mesmo ano foi feito ainda um depósito de um pedido de patente no exterior (EUA) o
qual conta com uma docente vinculada ao Departamento de Parasitologia na lista de
inventores. Por fim, destaca-se a concessão de uma patente pelo INPI na qual constam
como inventoras duas docentes vinculadas ao Departamento de Microbiologia. Uma
lista desses pedidos e patentes são apresentados em lista anexa. Os dados

demonstram o importante papel do ICB na área de inovação tecnológica e sua posição
de destaque no âmbito da Universidade de São Paulo. No entanto, não há dúvidas,
temos um grande espaço, e um grande desafio, a ser preenchido nessa área.

9 PRÊMIOS OUTORGADOS A DOCENTES/ORIENTADORES DO ICB EM 2010
O desenvolvimento da pesquisa do ICB tem participado ativamente de
congressos nacionais e internacionais, como importante forma de divulgação de nosso
trabalho. Durante o ano de 2010, vários desses trabalhos, seja de docentes, seja de
orientandos, tiveram sua qualidade reconhecida, tendo recebido um total de 42 prêmios
e menções honrosas, o que deve ser salientado como um importante feito de nossa
pesquisa. Na figura 11, está apresentada a distribuição desses prêmios, segundo a
procedência.

10 PARTICIPAÇÃO DA COMUNIDADE DO ICB NO CORPO EDITORIAL DE PERIÓDICOS CIENTÍFICOSA participação em corpos editoriais consiste em um reconhecimento da inserção de
grupos de pesquisa em temas relacionados àquela revista científica. Os docentes do
ICB têm contribuído de modo significativo como membros de corpo editorial de 56
periódicos nacionais e internacionais. A participação em corpo editorial atesta a
representatividade e a liderança da comunidade do Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas
nas áreas científicas de atuação. Na Tabela 6, apresentamos a lista de periódicos
científicos nos quais temos atuação de nossos docentes, como membros de corpo

11. OUTROS INDICADORES DE PRODUTIVIDADE
O número absoluto de publicações científicas, ou mesmo o índice de impacto
dos periódicos onde são publicados nem sempre reflete a contribuição científica dos
trabalhos publicados. As citações desses trabalhos provavelmente constituem melhor
indicação dessa contribuição. O levantamento do número de citações e fator “H” dos
docentes do Instituto foi realizado por buscas na base de dados “Scopus”, até o final de
2010, e o resultado está sumarizado na Tabela 7. Esses dados estão sujeitos a
problemas pelas dificuldades na busca propriamente ditas, e, portanto, podem ter erros,
mas certamente poderemos aperfeiçoar a forma de busca em momentos futuros. O
número de citações de nossos docentes (na ativa) atingiu o expressivo número de
90.487, o que representa um índice de citação média de 624.
A base Scopus também fornece o cálculo do fator “H” de cada docente
pesquisado, considerando somente os artigos publicados a partir de 1995. O fator “H” é
um importante valor de qualificação da produção científica produtividade por considerar
o número de citações que um dado conjunto de artigos recebeu, minimizando eventuais
distorções do número absoluto de citações. Realizamos uma busca no índice H dos
docentes do ICB, com objetivo de acompanhamento futuro, o que pode auxiliar como
subsídio para avaliar a evolução dos docentes em suas carreiras, assim como para
auxiliar no desenvolvimento de política de contratação de novos quadros. Na análise
realizada até final de 2010, o índice H médio foi calculado como 10, mostrando que
temos espaços para melhorar.

Finalmente, vale à pena destacar que durante o ano de 2010, os docentes do
ICB conseguiram que arrecadar, considerando apenas projetos FAPESP, valores
superiores a R$ 18.000.000,00 para financiamento de suas pesquisas. Esse dado é
interessante, pois indica a capacidade desses pesquisadores de trazer recursos para a
pesquisa na universidade. Na Figura 12, é apresentada a distribuição dos recursos
obtidos por nossos docentes nos últimos 3 anos. Não estão incluídos nesses dados
outros auxílios como bolsas, auxílios viagem, pesquisadores visitantes, etc. Destaca-se
nessa figura um aumento dos recursos obtidos principalmente em Projetos Temáticos.
Curiosamente, não temos registros de recursos obtidos por cerca de 30% dos docentes
nos últimos 3 anos. Apesar de preocupante, porém, esses dados devem ser analisados
com cautela pelas dificuldades em se obter um levantamento real em várias das
agências de financiamento do país, ou mesmo de empresas privadas, além de não
incluir recursos obtidos em projetos científicos realizados em colaboração e
coordenados em outras instituições.

A seguir apresentamos a lista das publicações de docentes do ICB durante o ano
de 2010, seguido das cópias das primeiras páginas de publicações com índice de
impacto acima de 4,0. Nesta lista incluímos publicações em revistas consideradas
excelentes pela comunidade científica, tais como: Behavioral and Brain Sciences,
Cell Death and Differentiation, Cell Metabolism, Current Biology, Diabetes, Lancet,
Mechanisms of Ageing and Development, Circulation Research, PLOS Biology,
PLOS Pathogens, PNAS USA, entre outras.
Apesar de reconhecermos que os levantamentos efetuados neste anuário podem
ter falhas e precisam ser aperfeiçoados, nossa expectativa é, com esses dados, auxiliar
os docentes do ICB a nortearem seus trabalhos de pesquisa, buscando cada vez mais
uma melhoria de qualidade e contribuição efetiva para o conhecimento científico.
