19 Março / March——————————Pier Paolo Tamburelli Maravilhas do Mundo ModernoWonders of the Modern World

In 1721 the austrian architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlachpublished the Entwurff einer historischen Architektur, a collectionof 86 folios intending to illustrate the architecture of the jews, egyp-tians, syrians, persians, greeks, romans, arabs, turks, siamese, chineseand japanese together with some projects by its author. The goal wasto obtain an Idée generale de la diversité des batiments de l’antiq-uité et de toutes les Nations. Fischer selected buildings and land-scapes to be included in his book according to two simple parameters:the elements of the collection are all monumentsand they are allreal. In so doing Fischer delineates a possible method for the under-standing of monumental architecture that is both realistand com-parative. Fischer seems to implicitly suggest a critique of the liberalpresuppositions of Modern architecture that is similar to the critiqueaddressed by anthropologists and economists to the interpretationsof primitive economy in classical liberalism. These realisticcritiques– as well as the arguments we can discover in Adolf Loos’ Architec-ture, Aldo Rossi’s The Architecture of the Cityand Rem Kool-haas’ Delirious New York–allow us to (re-)think architecture assomething immediately immersed into linguistic exchange and in-extricably linked to social and religious ceremonies

Relentless grey apartment blocks, windswept squares and parades of missiles. This is the grim image of Pyongyang that most of us havefrom western media, but the reality is pastel-coloured fantasy worlddotted with curious sci-fi structures, forming one of the strangest citieson the planet. Oliver Wainwright will take us on an eye-openingtour behind closed doors in the most secretive country in the world, revealing a place that has been carefully constructed as a politicaland ideological tool. From the palatial reading rooms of the GrandPeople’s Study House, to the locker rooms of the recently renovatedMay Day Stadium, he will explain how architecture and planningis used to reinforce the national Juche ideology. Under the presentleader, Kim Jong Un, construction has ramped up apace: “Let usturn the whole country into a socialist fairyland!” declares one ofhis official patriotic slogans. He is rapidly transforming Pyongyanginto a playground, conjuring a flimsy fantasy of prosperity andusing architecture as a powerful anaesthetic, numbing the popula-tion from the stark reality of his authoritarian regime.

21 Maio / May——————————Samia Henni A Arquitetura da ContrarrevoluçãoArchitecture of Counterrevolution

During the Algerian Revolution (1954–1962), the French civil andmilitary authorities profoundly reorganized Algeria’s vast urbanand rural territory, drastically transformed its built environments, rapidly implanted new infrastructures, and strategically built newsettlements in order to keep Algeria under French rule. The Frenchcolonial regime planned and undertook not only tactical destructionprograms, but also built new settlements in order to facilitate thestrict control of the Algerian population and the protection of theEuropean communities of Algeria. This lecture examines three in-terrelated spatial counterrevolutionary measures: the massive forcedresettlement of farmers; the mass-housing programs designed for theAlgerian population as part of General Charles de Gaulle’s Plan deConstantine; and the fortified administrative new town planned forthe protection of the French authorities from the terrorist attacks of aFrench paramilitary group during the last months of the AlgerianRevolution. And depicts the modus operandiof these settlements, their roots, scopes, actors, protocols, and design mechanisms.

25Junho / June——————————Catherine MosbachAtivar a Paisagem Activated Lands

The landscape experiments, concretions in continuous formation, share dissolution of limits—understood as transitions, transmuta-tions, and migrations; that is, they share a fragmentation of staticstates and temporalities so as to initiate the fiction of multiple states ofstasis through the material and factual operations of figuration andreconfiguration. The mining-seismic dialogue reflects the ground ma-terial in a way that is least museum-like and least stable. Its aim is todig into the subsoil and peel back the earth’s layers, to make of it anobject to experience, a “material” for the Louvre Lens to display, ren-dering the main enclosure of the park a part of the museum’s collec-tion. At Taichung, the surface material takes forms and redistributesitself in a manner greatly reminiscent of subsoil—always active andexposed to a diluvia rhythm by the fluctuations of tropical watersthat are distributed between thick layers and across vast territories. The material is returned to the productive interaction of water andair interlocked with the cultural interaction of territories, so that therevealed layers may be elevated to the status of a sensory experiment.
