Como Portugal se expandiu pelo Mundo

A expansao ultramarina tomava-se imperativo vital para um Pais de tao escasso

territ6rio na Europa, e de popula9ao tao empenhada na tarefa gloriosa de «dilatar a Fe

e O Imperio» (CAMOES).

A Reconquista definitiva do Algarve europeu, ia seguir-se a do «Algarve de Alem­

-Mar» e da costa africana, com a chegada as ilhas atlanticas vizirihas (1). Sao estas ilhas

que marcam o primeiro passo do novo Estado para os grandes descobrimentos geograficos.

Portugal, pelos caminhos do mar (2), vem a tornar-se uma especie de «Fenicia do

Ocidente» (TOURVILLE). E como os Espanh6is, em rivalidade fecunda com os Portugueses,

se expandiram tambem por via maritima, teve no seculo xv de dividir-se o mundo todo,

entre os dois povos irmaos, por duas grandes «esferas de influencia» (3).

Os rumos das caravelas abrem entao um sistema de comunica96es que pode com­

parar-se ao das antigas vias romanas. Lisboa, como se fora uma «nova Roma» (CAMOES),

torna-se a metr6pole do Mundo (4). Vidimus orbem in urbe (CARDEAL JUSTINIANO).A grande actividade missionaria e civilizadora dos Portugueses aparece personi­

ficada no seculo XVI em S. Francisco Xavier, um espanhol que, trabalhando ao servi90 de

Portugal, a si mesmo se disse portugues. Foi ele o grande «Ap6stolo do Oriente», como nos mostram as suas viagens (5); e de Goa irradiou depois a ac9ao evangelizadora que lhe

valeu o titulo de «Roma da fndia» (FRYER) ou ainda «Roma do Oriente» (REMY).

<9verseas expansion became a vital necessity for a country whose European territory was so small and whose people had undertaken the glorious mission of «spreading the Faith and the Empire» (CAM5Es).

The final reconquest

of the European Algarve was to be followed by the conquest of the «Oversea Algarve» and the African coast, with the reaching of the neighbouring Atlantic islands (1). These islands mark the first stage of the new state on the road to great geographical discoveries.

Portugal, by its sea-roads (2), becomes a sort of «Phoenicia of the fVest» (TOURVILLE).

And as Spain, in fruitful rivalry with Portugal, had also carried her frontiers overseas, the world had to be divided between the two sister nations in the fifteenth century into two great «spheres of influence» (3).

The routes followed

by the carvels open up a system of communications which may be compared with the former network of Roman roads. Lisbon, like a «new Rome» (CAM5Es),

becomes the metropolis of the world (4). Vidimus orbem in urbe (CARDINAL JUSTINIAN).

The great missionary and civilising activity of Portugal is typified in the sixteenth century in the person of St. Francis Xavier, a Spaniard who, working in the service of Portugal, called himself Portuguese. He was the great «Apostle of the East» as his journeys show us (5);

and from Goa there radiated the evangelising activity which conferred on it the title of «the Rome in India» (FRYER) or else «the Rome of the East» (REMY).
