My great/great grandfather Captain Arano, in 1870 was head of shipping company Arano, exporting and importing material goods from Spain. The shipping company in 1880 transformed into a trading company exporting wine, and other basic commodities (olive oil, salt, leather).

Over time the trading company started to export spanish brands (ceramic, olive oil, oranges, tomatoes etc.)

By the year 2000 the trading company operates only with wine exports.

In 2005 the company decides to explore artesanal products.

2009 first export of leathergood products. La Portegna is born.

TIMELINE

Many years ago wandering through my grandfather´s old warehouse of international imports, I discovered a lion´s rug. I found out trough my grandmother´s travel photo album dated in 1933, that the lion rug was hunted and presented by Ernest Hemingway. The photo album evoked the romantic idea that travelling was a life experience.

The merging of two worlds, the unspoiled nature of the new world and the glamour of the old world (Europe), inspired us to create a collection of travel bags with rustic materials and accesories that captured the essence of timeless travel.

There was a time travelling was not just getting from one place to another. It was a life experience, it made you feel more conected to the world. We started the company because that´s the way we want to travel.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

1. ECOLOGICAL We source from locally grown natural materials such as vegetable tanned leather and natural handmade textiles. Vegetable leather is extracted from vegetable tannins in an ecologically friendly process. The great thing about it is the genuine and lush appearance, and best of all, it ages gracefully.

4. SIMPLEThe products are designed for travel, whether you are in Heathrow airport or in an hacienda in Cusco. They have to be simple, functional, robust and timeless.

3. CULTURAL IDENTITYWe take the inspiration from exotic roadtrips that one would return from, bringing goods from a specific place or origin. That is why our ideas and identity come from cultural or folkloric sources. It is an ancient cultural aesthetic that reflects patterns of life from far flung corners of earth.

2. HANDMADEAll our products are handmade and that is why they have a more intimate and natural touch. We believe it is worth the effort to invest in natural handmade goods.
