The combination of the size-dependent properties of nano-materials with the noninvasive characterisation in molec-ular imaging is a powerful combination that is being suc-cessfully applied across disciplines. In the past ten years,we have witnessed the development of, literally, hundredsof nanoparticle-based probes for molecular imaging. Allmajor imaging techniques have been enhanced by the useof nanoparticles, particularly magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and opticalimaging.The use of iron oxide nanoparticles for T1-weightedand/or T2-weightedMRI, the design of radioisotope chelator-free particles for PET, and new developments in fluorescentnanoparticles (carbon dots and upconverting nanoparticles)are important milestones in the field. There are two keyfeatures in nanoparticle-based probes which are seldomfound in traditional imaging probes: multimodality andmultifunctionality. The use of, at least, two complemen-tary imaging techniques (multimodality) like PET/MRI orMRI/Fluorescence and the possibility of incorporating sev-eral vectors on the surface and/or drugs (multifunctionality)expand the use of these probes. Furthermore, the properties

of some nanoparticles can be used to create new imagingtechniques, for example, the superparamagnetism of ironoxide nanoparticles for magnetic particle imaging.

In this issue, we have aimed to provide a platformfor high-quality contributions on nanoparticles applicationto molecular imaging. Original papers and review articlesfocusing on the latest application of nanoparticle-basedimaging probes were submitted. The topics treated includethe application of iron oxides for MRI, for PET/MRI, and fordrug delivery; new synthesis approaches to obtain magneticnanoparticles-based contrast agents; polymeric nanoparticlesfor ultrasound imaging; new computed tomography (CT)contrast agents; and quantum dots for multiplex opticalimaging. We received a total of 16 submissions, and aftertwo rounds of rigorous review, 9 papers were accepted forpublications in this special issue.
