Naturtejo Geopark shows a landscape which tells the history of the last

600 milion years, through wide Plains from where ancient residual relieves

rise: granite relieves (Monsanto, S. Gens), sedimentary relieves (Murracha,

Murrachinha, Pedras Ninhas) tectonic relieves (Ponsul, Sobreira Formosa fault

scarps), Appalachian-type quartzite relieves (Penha Garcia, Ródão, Moradal,

Monforte da Beira). The wide plains are only changed by the deep incision of the

Middle Tejo river systems. This geological history may be understood with the

visit to the 16 Geopark’s Geomonuments.

EUroPEan GEoParkS nEtWorkThe European Geoparks Network (EGN) was created in 2000 by four pioneer

geoparks and is under the auspices of UNESCO since 2001.

In 2011, the Network is constituted by 43 geoparks distributed in 17 European

countries.

For the European Geoparks Network, a Geopark must combine protection

and promotion of the geological heritage with sustainable local development,

through Conservation, Education and (Geo)tourism.

The main purposes of EGN are:

- to protect geodiversity,

- to promote the geological heritage for the general public,

- to support the economic sustainable development of Geopark regions.
