O tempo em que esteve preso por Lampião, Pedro Paulo Magalhães Dias (ou Pedro Paulo Mineiro Dias), inspetor da Standar-Oil Comapny (Esso), conhecido como Mineiro, testemunhou a vida dos cangaceiros e traçou o perfil de Virgulino, segun do sua avaliação. Lampião pediu à empre-sa um resgate de vinte contos de réis pelo pri -sioneiro e acertou que se o resgate não fosse pago, mataria Mineiro. Mineiro vi-veu os dias de cativeiro, atormentado por terrível temor de ser morto por Lampião . Finalmente, per-cebendo o estado de es-pírito do prisioneiro, Virgulino tranquili-zou afirmando:"Se vier o dinheiro eu solto se não vierem eu solto também, querendo Deus. Resolveu libertar Mineiro, antes porém, teve uma longa conversa com ele. Falou para Mineiro, por sentir-se naquele momento Senhor Absoluto do Sertão, que poderia ser Governador do Sertão. Minei -ro perguntou-lhe, caso fosse governa -dor, que planos teria para governar. Ficou sur-preso com as respostas, que revelara ter Virgulino conhecimento da situação política da região conhecento seus proble -mas mais urgentes. Padre. Daquele momento em diante passou a chamar a si próprio de Capitão Virgulino. Maria Bonita. Até 1930, ou início de 31, não se tem registro da existência da mulher no Cangaço. Aparentemente, Lampião foi o primeiro a arranjar uma companheira. Ma -ria Déia, quem ficou conhecida posterior-mente como Maria Bonita, foi a companhe -ira de Virgulino até a morte de ambos. Ma -ria Bonita chamava-se Dona Maria Ne-ném, e era casada com José Nenem. Foi cri -ada na pequena fazenda, de propriedade de seu pai em Jeremoabo Bahia e vivia em companhia do marido na cidadezinha de Santa Brígida. Maria não tinha bom relacio -namento com o marido. Lampião costuma -va passar várias vezes pela fazenda do pais de Maria, porque a mesma ficava na fronte -ira entre Bahia e Sergipe. Os pais de Maria Bonita sentiam pelo Capitão uma mistura de respeito e admi -ração. A mãe contou a Lampião que sua filha era sua admiradora.

A influ -ência de Floro, perante todo o país, devia ao seu estreito relacionamento com o Pa-dre Cícero Romão. Por sugestão do Padre Cícero, só havia em todo Nodeste uma pessoa que poderia combater a Coluna e sair bem da empreitada. Indicou então o no -me de Virgulino. Floro reuniu uma força de combate, composta, em sua maioria, de jagunços do Cariri. Os Batalhões Patrióti-cos, como foram chamados, ganharam armas dos depósitos do exército, porque tinham apoio material e financeiro do go -verno federal. Juazeiro no princípio de março de l926. Só atendeu ao convite porque reconheceu a assi natura de Cícero no documento. Acompanha -do por um oficial dos Batalhões Patrióticos, entrou na comarca de Juazeiro em 03 de mar-ço, tendo os cangaceiros uma conduta exem-plar. Prometer a ele o seu perdão e o comando de um dos destacamento caso aceitassem a contaber os revoltosos. Lampião e seu bando, entrou na cidade no dia 04 de março. Na au-diência com o Padre Cícero, foi lavrado um documento, assinato por Pedro de Albuquer-que Uchôa, inspetor agrícola do Ministério da Agricultura, nomeando Virgulino capitão dos Batalhões Patrióticos. Esse documento dava livre trânsito a Lampião e seu grupo, de estado a estado, para combater a coluna. Re cebera uniformes, armamentos e munição pa -ra o combate. Lampião já tinha pensado mui -tas vezes em deixar o cangaço. Sem dúvida, aquela era uma grande oportunidade, pro-porcionada pelo seu protetor e padrinho Pa -dre Cícero. Estava disposto a cumprir sua parte no trato e toda as promessas feita ao
