“From coast to coast, Gran Canaria breaths sport”

COUNCILLOR OF SPORT FOR THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF GRAN CANARIA

Another year is upon us, indeed the events 7th year already. Once again

the Canary Islands get ready to celebra-te one of their most important races, the Gran Canaria Marathon. Thousands of athletes from all around the world will gather on our island, in its capital, to take part in one of the three races of this multi-tudinous event, the Marathon, Half Mara-thon and 10k, as well of course in the Cha-rity Fun Run and Children’s Race which both nicely complement the main races.

Year after year, the Gran Canaria Mara-thon has gone from strength to strength both nationally and internationally, tes-tament to which is the participation of athletes from over 60 countries during the last number of editions of the race. Participation numbers for the race have been an outstanding success over the years and have placed our island on the international sporting map. 2016 will see the race make even further progress.

All year round, for any sport, Gran Canaria is the ideal place to come. Our climate, considered to be one of the best climates

in the world, makes the Island the perfect place to do any type of sport, and even more so in Winter, a period when the rest of Europe is suffering from low, cold tem-peratures.

Gran Canaria breathes sport from coast to coast. Events like this one, which year after year surpass the race participation estimates of the race organisers, supports and strengthens our belief that we can call our island, “The European Island of Sport”.

The internal struggle against body and mind, the thousands of hours of training, early mornings and sacrifice will all be rewarded once you cross the finish line at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium of Las Pal-mas de Gran Canaria.

Good luck to everyone and many thanks for taking part in this wonderful festival of sport.

“Everyone can take credit for the race’s continued growth”

COUNSELLOR OF SPORT FOR THE CITY COUNCIL OF LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA

T he special weekend of athletics is fina-lly here. Our city, Las Palmas de Gran

Canaria, will welcome, as is now the cus-tom at the end of January, athletes from a host of countries, from numerous Spanish cities and from the majority of the 88 mu-nicipalities of the Canary Islands.

The fact we are now in its 7th edition, shows how important the race has beco-me. Behind the scenes, is a laborious pro-ject, a project that is product of profes-sionalism and the will to work hard, the desire to continuously learn from past ex-periences and a vocation to continue in the fight to improve and make things be-tter. But not only should we give thanks to those that directly work in this great event, praise should also be given to all those citizens who year after year help to make the event continue to grow.

We are making our debut as the govern-ment of the organising city of this great festival of sport that has been taking sha-pe over the last number of weeks. The time we had to prepare for the race has been limited by various circumstances but I would like to emphasize that the race will not be found wanting in terms of the work effort and imagination that a

race of this magnitude requires.

On behalf of the City Council of Las Pal-mas de Gran Canaria, we will put all of our organisational strength behind this special day for athletics, helping across a variety of areas and contributing where needed, to help make this festival of sport a Sunday that we will never forget; for example, at the runners expo, the Sport-sExpo, where you will be able to see the variety and fantastic opportunities our Is-land offers with its cocktail of an infinite choice of sport combined with our won-derful climate, and at the Charity Fun Run and Children’s Races.

Let’s go and enjoy this festival of sport, an event that belongs to all the citizens.

PRESIDENT OF HOSPITALES SAN ROQUE

Hospitales San Roque operates on the principles of effort, talent and

consistency. We also see these values in the men and women that decide to take up the challenge of achieving their per-sonal goals. Men and women just like those athletes that are participating in the wonderful festival of sport that is the Gran Canaria Marathon, an event that we want to help to continue to grow.

This is one of the reasons why we deci-ded to support the race and why we be-came the main race sponsor of the 2016 edition. Furthermore, loyal to our philo-sophy of promoting healthy living habits that help in the prevention of illnesses and the preservation of good health, we are also supporting and are actively involved in various initiatives that help

look after the health of the general po-pulation and those participating in one way or another in this particular event.

The Gran Canaria Marathon captures the attention of thousands of people who participate in the event every year. To all those participating, we would like to em-phasise the need to look after your heal-th in a preventative, not reactive way. To compete, not only should you be heal-thy, but you should also know how to stay healthy and this where you should rely on qualified professionals who can give a certified review of your health sta-tus. Hospitales San Roque offers the very best care to all participants of the event with the added commitment to quality, consistency, talent and effort that every athlete should have.

A party for all Gran CanariaRace Organisers of the Hospitales San Roque Gran Canaria Marathon hope that all citizens will take part in the party and help create a fantastic at-mosphere throughout the race course

Organisers of the Hospitales San Roque Gran Canaria Marathon

have organised a varied programme of activities along the race route with the hope of encouraging all citizens of the city to come out and support the event. The 21 municipalities of the island, various different compa-nies and The Carnival Promotional Society of Las Palmas de Gran Cana-ria, amongst others, will also play an important role in contributing to the race day atmosphere.

Members of the race organising team have visited every Town Council of Gran Canaria, making personal con-tact with Lord Mayors, Counsellors for Sport and various sporting officials with the aim of trying to help vitalize and create a special race atmosphere throughout the 21 kilometer markers along the race route as well as asking town councils for any resources that may be able to provide to help add to

the race atmosphere.

Where ever they went and whoever they spoke to, the race organising team received a positive response with everyone delighted to be pre-sent come race day and delighted to help the 2016 Hospitales San Roque Gran Canaria Marathon become the race for all Gran Canarians.

Each Town Council will have various activities taking place at their assig-ned kilometre marker, e.g. DJs com-mentating on the race and encoura-ging runners as they pass by, music, bands, drum groups, sport exhibi-tions, etc. The aim is that the activi-ties of each town council will help complement the atmosphere crea-ted by the various other animation companies that will be placed throu-ghout the course.

42 exhilarating kilometresThe showpiece of the Hospitales San Roque Gran Canaria Marathon 2016, a race that is just as much a mental challenge to overcome as it is physical

The main event of the largest Cana-rian athletics meet is the Marathon

and it takes place on Sunday 24th of January in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is run on a totally flat urban city cen-tre circuit. The race starts at 9am and the race has a time limit of 6 hours, af-ter which the finish line area will close at 3pm.

Those participating in the marathon will run two slight different laps, the first lap being run on the Half Marathon course for

the first 20,700 metres and at that point, the route goes on to Calle Almansa whe-re it passes on to first lap again at Cas-tillejos. From that point onwards, those runners who all have the most amount of training under their belts, head out on the 2nd lap of the course which is 700m longer than the first lap and therefore helps the route add up to the required marathon distance of 42,195 metres. The race starts in Avenida del Industrial José Sánchez Peñate with the finish line loca-ted at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.

Guaguas and Sagulpa, to the athletes serviceRace Participants will be able to travel by bus free of charge and will have first priority at the intermodal parking area

The Hospitales San Roque Gran Cana-ria Marathon is travelling by bus, by

“Guaguas Municipales”. An agreement has been reached to allow the use of bu-ses from the public transport company Guaguas Municipales to help transport athletes to the epicentre of the race at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus over the main days of the international athletics event taking place in the Gran Canarian capital. Those participating in the races taking place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of January will be able to travel for free, two hours before the start of the race and two hours after the end of the race, on all Guaguas Municipales bus lines. Runners

can take advantage of this special offer by simply presenting their race number.

Additionally, as a result of the partners-hip with Sagulpa, runners competing on Sunday will be able to reserve a parking spot in the “Intermodal” parking zone. The City Council would like to promote a Sustainable Transport culture and for this reason, runners who would like to reser-ve a parking space can do soat a price of €2.50, but only if they share their car with at least two other runners. Parking places for shared vehicles can be reserved on Fri-day and Saturday at the Race Secretaries office at the Gran Canaria Sports Expo.

The official race website, www.granca-nariamaraton.com, has played an im-portant role in informing athletes of the various races and activities taking place on the both the day of the event and the days leading up to the event.

Facebook, Twitter and Flickr have also been key elements in the communica-tion process with race participants and have provided a steady flow of news items on a range of subjects from race news to race sponsors, giving news updates about the race on a daily basis.
