The holding of the second edition of the Photogra-

phy Study Field Camp, part of the Living in Art project, was

a double confirmation of both a reality and the realisation of a

need. The confirmation is that explained and affirmed in the

words of the writer José Saramago in his Journey To Portugal:

because “if cities were given alternative names, such as was the

practice with kings, the traveller would propose “the well-sur-

rounded” for Portalegre (...) the settlement of Portus Alacer,

which led to Portalegre, port álacre, port alegre (happy port)”.

In fact, how could we not have chosen this to be the port for

the Arts? If we think of the reasons that led the oldest settle-

ments (even those we are not aware of nowadays) to settle in

this region and the reasons which drove King D. Afonso III to

order the construction of the ancient settlement in 12591, we

would find this justification in the very beauty of the place. A

natural surroundings poetically described in the sixteenth cen-

tury by D. Frei Amador Arrais: “The Serra de São Mamede is

one of the best in Lusitânia (…) which seems to be demarcated

by its coolness and its trees, many meadows, and the vari-

ety and quality of its fruits, the pleasant softness of the air,

flowing among flowers and fragrant herbs, which blows and

forms a gentle noise and music, with different plants, a multi-

tude of clear fountains, fresh cold waters. (...) graceful blends

of various colours, which are present in great abundance in the

city2”. The need is that which stems from the restlessness of the

human soul and that is the ability that humans have to turn on

and connect to the space that surrounds them, a need that is

commonly called Art. Moreover, because throughout the his-

tory of Portalegre the products of that Art were added (of archi-

tecture; sculpture; of painting; of books and writing; of bodily

movement, etc.), today, in the 21st-century “Living in Art” is

the synthesis and also the pretext to continue creating, manu-

facturing and producing, gradually making Portalegre the port

to support the arts…

N o t e s

1 Portus Alacer may have been the designation attributed to Portalegre in a charter

granted by King D. Afonso III (1248-1279) to the small town located at the foot

of the Serra de São Mamede, referring to it as a pleasant, cheerful place with good

views.2 Adapted from D. Frei Amador Arrais – Diálogos. Porto: Lello & Irmãos Editores,

1974, p. 236.

Above all, life for a photographer

cannot be a matter of indifference.

Robert Frank

Current heritage processes foster the plastic nature of

former industrial sites which find an opportunity for reuse

and reoccupation within the Arts and Culture. The century-

old “factory of corks”, of the British Robinsons, was more

than just a space for work – it was a stage for experiences. Each

corner of Robinson appears to have been intended for the

purpose we now want to give it. Photography has been the

artistic area deserving greatest attention by the Foundation

which thus sought, in its first two editions of its arts acad-

emy, to provide continuity to the work done on the project

for the reconversion of the Robinson Factory to form a con-

temporary photographic repository based on the practice

of documenting and recording the memories of the former

industrial space.

The Call for the “Photography Field Camp – Portalegre

2014”, which took place between 8 to 27 September, chal-

lenged various artists to submit an application to work the

Robinson Space photographically, with four general themes

forming the point of departure: a) the factory in the city; b)

the machines; c) the working class; d) the Robinsons. The

responses exceeded all expectations. A total of 38 applica-

tions were received1, of which only 36 were assessed since 2

proposals were sent outside the application period.

The option was taken to fill only four of the eight places

initially available, with the aim of avoiding some of the con-

straints felt in the first edition of the academy. This question

was not only because of the difficulties of coordinating and

managing a large group, but also in order to more carefully

ensure the premises inherent within the concepts of “resi-

As respostas superaram todas as expectativas.

dency”, “cohabitation” and “sharing” which these artistic

creation events promote. The option to reduce the num-

ber of resident artists in this second edition led to better

results. A greater closeness was felt between the artists,

and it was certainly easier for the artists to contact us with

their requests and issues so as to get their projects up and

running.

Watching the artists encounter the Robinson Space

was a privilege… it was a unique moment. The artist easily

enters the atmosphere surrounding the factory space and

looks beyond the obvious, the apparent reality of the state

of ruin characteristic of an unoccupied, albeit secure, space

brings. Perhaps this is the real definition of a true artist...

Or the art of each one surrounding themselves in complete

harmony... That is, being in art. I felt that, from the first day

of the residence, the selected artists – Fran, Pedro, Priscilla

and Sara – were in complete harmony with the space that

served as the pretext for them to create.

The rigorousness of Fran, who often said he was

“being crushed” by the size of the Factory space, led to him

spending hours there: “I spent many hours in the space,

fulfilling a timetable that any of its workers could have had

and little by little this experience allowed me to look into

other aspects which I had not noticed at first.2” The result

was five proposals of work (“Bendecido”; “Peches”; “Mosa-

ics”; “Charcos” and “Salvapantallas”) which also resulted in

performances recorded on video as a document/record of

the creative process.

From Pedro the recurring Memory... All the Memo-

ries of the Factory; from the Worker who is the main actor

in a scene reminiscent of “Light and Shade”; from his own

Memory of the space as an author and spectator: “The

Memory. The sensation of the author himself with the fac-

tory accompanied by “luminous memory” which pulls the

chords of each one of the photographs3”. In referring to the

memory of the factory, Pedro evokes the dazzle of another

artist, musician and friend Bernando Sasseti…

The recognition of the importance of transdiscipli-

narity in the artistic processing of the Factory space is

expressed in the four photographic series from Priscila.

The photograph; the painting; the installation; literature;

music; and so many other expressive resources were lying

there waiting for freedom: “I opted to develop a process

and experimental work, based on the days experienced in

the factory, the responses to what would be developed as

work, taking care so that the resulting imagery was condu-

cive to the poetics of my proposal, and not a commitment

to the literal representation of the space – since there are

always many truths of a reality (…)1”

Moreover, almost serving as a pre-conclusion, the pre-

sent and latent dichotomy of Factory/City in Sara’s narra-

tive. The Factory which was started in the city, a place close

to its reason for existence: the Cork!; this Factory which sus-

tained the City and made it, during its history, a Factory-

City as an autonomous space... in the end with one always

depending on the other. Nowadays, in the “Fragments” of

this Factory, “the tone of hope”, the Future, which Sara

links to the History of the City of Portalegre, which (at the

same time) is the History of the Factory: “Here comes the

wind from the south!”, a verse taken from a poem by Régio,

A Toada de Portalegre (The tune of Portalegre), which evokes

for me the idea of life and respiration in opposition to heat

and the drought which destroys. A tone with which I link

the history of Portalegre to the closing of the Robinson Fac-

tory, but also with the message of hope of the new genera-

tion writing a new history for its city.”2

The Robinson Foundation launched a new call for Artis-

tic Residency in 2014 to provide continuity to the Photog-

raphy Field Studies, started in 2012, and to stimulate the

process of new eyes viewing the ROBINSON SPACE: a) the

factory and the city; b) the machines; c) the working class;

d) the Robinsons. Thirty-seven artists replied to this new

call with different proposals and different curricula vitae,

and in the end four applicants were accepted.

Their tutorials were structured around three important

moments during the creative process. An initial moment,

occurring soon after the first days of contact which the art-

ist had with the reality of the physical and social space of

the Robinson factory, which gave them time enough to trace

their first project ideas. A second moment, where it was

possible to understand the nature of their artistic proposals

and, finally, a third moment where as their proposals con-

solidated this allowed a perspective on their outcome. How-

ever, people should not think that four more pairs of eyes

would exhaust the potential imagery relating to the Robin-

son Space since, the more artists have the opportunity to do

so, the more different looks and different perspectives are

created around the same themes and spaces.

It is indeed initiatives like this, the Project Living in Art

which provide an important effort to materialise the con-

temporary look, to constitute memory.

The artist’s look goes beyond the boundary of the tech-

nical recording, and lends it a soul pregnant with new mean-

ings. Upon the document a new document is constructed,

adding new layers of reading, new meanings, giving new

life to its surroundings. In this sense, the artist acts as a

researcher who, armed with skewed tools, frees the pho-

tograph from the criteria which seek to bind it to mime-

sis, to phantasmagoria. In this way, the photograph goes

beyond the condition of descriptive object and becomes a

bearer of meanings, not just a witness to the territory and

identity, but also enabling the construction and reconstruc-

tion of narratives. The full look of the photographer is not

absent but rather dedicated, lingering on the material in

order to celebrate the immaterial, having the job of collect-

ing a slice of its expression from the flow of time and rais-

ing it to the condition of memory. In this condition a set

of authored photos reflects a specific way of looking at the

world by imbuing it with a new coherence. It has the func-

tion of rescuing the extraordinary from the mundane and

sanctifying it, especially now that the practice of photogra-

phy has become democratic or trivialised, saturating percep-

tion, desensitising it.

I approached the memory space of the Robinson Fac-

tory with the aim of collecting evidence of its manual work.

In this way, on the surface of every photograph I tried to

imagine the workers in the factory, their actions and lives

as they switched on and switched off machines, opened up,

closed doors or pulled levers. I imagined their hands in a

frenetic dance of production, coming and going, cyclically

pressing buttons, handles, knobs, taps... Under the silence

of the present I can only imagine how each action would

have been, given that I can only try and imagine the fac-

tory as a large organisation whose life was maintained by

the touching hands of its workers.

A use of the cork tree provides a reference to the sus-

tainable activity in which the relationship between home-

nature occurs in a friendly manner. The importance of

cork in Portalegre is clear. The Robinson Factory can be

understood as an industry respecting its surroundings and

depending on the weather of that moment. For this reason,

the rain during the residency days interfered directly in

the “Mosaics” series and underlines this situation, to ena-

ble a return to past processes in which the weather marked

events and a period more aware of its place in nature.

The industrial revolution might have helped change

this situation, to establish a clear tendency towards the

rationalisation and control of everything resulting from

the very organicity of things. The pace in time marked by

the consideration of changes, of events, needs a unit of

measurement to better organise the labours of production.

The second sets in, the hours repeating and it appears that

everything is the same day after day. But nothing is con-

stant, not even the rotation of the earth on its axis. Then

it starts slowing down and requires the progressive exten-

sion of a second to adapt to the reality of the movement.

Activities of a more daily nature, such as sweeping the

floor, may be understood as a similar action to this trend;

when sweeping we clean the dust and dirt so as to keep the

place as it was before. So that it can return to what it was.

A factory which is not looked after changes quickly.

In the Robinson facilities, this seems more dramatic. Cork

has always been a material capable of retaining liquids and

humidity; nevertheless, the rain gets in through the holes

in the ceiling and floods the floor. These forms are organic,

complex, and contrast with the rational patterns of the

R&D departments that are used to make the mosaics with

cork coverings which were produced here.

In a spontaneous manner I get a broom and quickly

sweep the water away, trying to represent those I keep in

my memory and so symbolically recover a time of the fac-

tory which has passed and that I should photograph before

it evaporates.

Silence and darkness. I hope for the light. A moment

in the memory.

So, it all begins, as in a play. The curtain rises and

the stage lights come on. The performance has begun.

The actors enter: Light and Shade. At the side in

an omnipresent manner, the main actor, an Evoca-

tion of a Robinson cork worker, who one day left leav-

ing everything to return at some point. And now years

after his departure, the story is now present through

photography.

The performance starts: Lights and Shadows from

a time forming part of the movement of the sun and

its path. That Light focuses on the essence of what

was and that darkness reminds us of the deception of

memory and does not allow us to see that which once

existed.

“The Memory of the Light” is a project based on

the author’s feelings towards the factory, making this a

beating within the oblivion of a place that maintains the

essence of what happened there.

The representation is the result of a game and a

search within time and space, a discovery of the actual

factory over time. An introspective journey into the

memory of the Robinson Factory. A round trip in the

history of a place.

A memory that lingers in time and like any play the

curtain falls and it comes to an end, to leave a reminder

of what the Robinson factory was before and is now.

Silencio y oscuridad.

Artistic residencies are powerful instruments for the

ongoing training of every artist, since they provide the oppor-

tunity to literally relocate from one’s daily routines, origi-

nal backgrounds, to immersive experiences in order to cre-

ate other/new contexts. The residency offered by the Robin-

son Foundation not only provided this experience, but also its

own object of study, the Factory, which invited and led us to

deepen this experience. The dis-activated cork factory, set up

during the 19th century, and which was a major driver for the

local economy, spreads out nowadays almost devoid of human

contact, throughout its seven hectares in area. The diversity

and wealth of its patios, buildings and machinery provide

rare spatio-temporal displacements, as we penetrate into the

intimacy of its architecture, between the objects of its large

marked body, which is still resisting time.

Given the large size of the Robinson Factory, both in

terms of its physical size and also its sociocultural and his-

torical dimension, there are many – and one could say almost

inexhaustible – possibilities for artistic projects which can be

developed, from the documentary to the more experimen-

tal genres. Upon encountering the Factory, in addition to

the whole range of possible themes, there are also variables

related to subjectivity, the look and the processing of each art-

ist (and in this regard, I did not restrict myself only to pho-

tography but thought about every form of contemporary art).

In this way, as I have developed works in various expressive

media (photography, painting, installation, literature and

others), and, very often in a transdisciplinary manner, it was

a particularly difficult task to define a single project, among

so many possible ones, for such a potentially rich space. How-

ever, it was also through that selective exercise that a large

part of the beauty of the residency has lain, in the process

of artistic growth and development of the work. Finally, as

detailed in my portfolio, I have photographically developed

four parallel projects, which interrelate and provide a dialogue

on the same theme.

Here comes the wind from the south! is a photographic pro-

ject which provides continuity to my reflection on the picture,

time and space.

Located in the Alto Alentejo region, the town of Portalegre

was for more than a century an important industrial centre

thanks to the production of cork at the Robinson Factory. In

2009, the factory closed leaving behind a valuable cultural and

social, historical and architectural heritage.

During my stay in Portalegre, I became interested in

the city and its surroundings. Guided by my impressions,

I explored the landscape in fragments; I photographed foot-

steps of history, of the present and of the unfinished... At the

same time I took an interest in the young people, the new gen-

eration, who stand in opposition to these relics of the past.

Making a point of comparison, these individuals and land-

scapes represent the passage of one place to another, from one

feeling to another, one state to another in creating an atmos-

phere and history still under construction.

Looking afar, I see the valleys and the horizon. The sky is

blue, the wind blows and clouds are formed, There comes the wind

from the south! The title There comes the wind from the south! is an

original verse taken from the poem A toada de Portalegre (The

tune of Portalegre) by the Portuguese poet José Régio, written

in homage to the city where he lived for more than 30 years.

a.Lá vem o vento suão!

The official closing of the residency, on 26 September,

brought together the four resident artists and the three invited

artists together who, responding to the challenge of the Foun-

dation, made comments at a public session on the presentation

of the artistic proposals of each of the resident authors. This

presentation talk also had the aim of being a space to exchange

ideas and experiences, and also promote a debate around the

importance of open spaces for artistic creation and their rela-

tionship with the communities and the regions where they are

promoted.

Luís Vintém

Edward Weston said that “the most important and most

difficult task for a photographer is not learning how the cam-

era works, mastering developing (today we would say digital

post-production) or knowing how to print photos, but rather

learning how to see photographically”. This reflection made

more than half a century ago seems to make even more sense

when we observe the path that photography has taken in recent

years. Cameras are everywhere and it is difficult to find some-

one not interested in this matter of making designs with light.

Just take a look at any on-line forum on photography and the

subjects which they talk about – almost always industry news

and comparisons between cameras and lenses in search of the

perfect one to photograph the navel (which is difficult to read as

a metaphor at the height of the “selfie”…) – to understand that

photography should be somewhere else.

Many would say that this art is experiencing a period of

crisis. That in this world there is an excess of information and

excess of images. That may be true. However, it is also true

that the democratisation of photography has also increased

the number of interesting photographers that we can find.

Which makes it increasingly difficult to know of the work of

all of these. Historians, write your photography dictionaries

now! Tomorrow it will be impossible to make a list of the com-

pelling photographers of our time. A short time ago I heard

somebody say that the crisis is no more than a situation preg-

nant with change. I look at the “photography crises” of the

past and I see that all were resolved by deepening the pho-

tographer’s relationship with the world and, in this process

revealing new worlds. The keys to the equation: meeting and

sharing.

About a year ago I met five exceptional photographers

in Portalegre. They had been invited by the Robinson Foun-

dation to look at the city of Portalegre and the century-old

Factory that is one of its icons, and to share this meeting

with the community. Halfway between their look and ours

we discovered our own reality. Here there were five indi-

viduals interested in “seeing photographically”, that is,

“learning to see the object you are faced with in terms of

the capacities of your working tools but above all your own

processes. Transforming the elements and values of what

is before you in the image that you seek to make” – Edward

Weston again...

This artistic residency offers something fundamental,

the essence of what matters most in photography. Meeting

through the “futile gesture” which is art: photographers were

offered a new world to discover and interpret, which we can

find only by looking out. To the people of Portalegre a new

look on themselves was offered, as if a magic mirror was

placed in front of us to get to know a little more of who we

are. Everyone was offered this meeting and sharing. That the

most important things in this art are light and (its) reflection

is much more than a metaphor.

Magda Cordas

Faced with a project with its cultural and artistic incen-

tive, which proposes to weave new visual discourses (result-

ing from new looks), through a spatial and energetic explo-

ration, all around everything connected to this design so as

to become an excellent place for reflection, experience and

contemplation for these young creators and new inhabitants.

Living in different scenarios – with the Robinson Factory as

a space of inspiration for creation becoming an atmosphere

náveis do nosso tempo.

A todos, ofereceu o encontro e a partilha.

with multiple possibilities – opening the door to interpret-

ing and experimenting with different aesthetic solutions.

Where the interaction between gesture, light and material –

and the other poetics of the space -, which cause visual and

aesthetic impact, provided support for the creative produc-

tions of these artists who increasingly sought original and

alternative ways of expressing themselves. In an atmosphere

of total creative freedom where it became possible to gener-

ate new reflections and forms of expression, resulting from

different looks, cultures and trajectories. The aesthetic per-

ceptions in the different artistic manifestations of the par-

ticipants in the residency programme – able to establish a

diversity of connections ranging from the most simple to

the highest level of complexity – showed themselves to be

an excellent illustration of the admirable vitality and singu-

larity of this place.

Marta NunesOften beauty lies not in the method but in the result.

Methods are as important as the list that we make –

there is a purpose, a goal, a series of steps, but we always

have extra ingredients. It is important to construct an oper-

ational basis for the objective we wish to attain. In this basis,

the method to be adopted is placed there, a guiding pivot

so that one can start, and use as a reference or as a van-

ishing point. Then there is the object, the factory and the

city, the surrounding individuals and the utensils which tell

stories when we look at them through a lens. There is only

one apparent silence in the images which are condensed. If

we give them time, they talk in shadows and light, smells,

sounds, sensations and all this together narrates lives and

moments. The life of the city and everything it constructs

will determine the content, what will be told. The result is

what is shown after a personal decanting, the filter of the

sequence and therein resides the beauty, the place where

subjectivity will function and a particular relationship with

the spaces in which we dwell.
